It’s amazing to see that ATV Cheerleaders has evolved into a space where the people they work with - athletes, coaches, parents alike - feel safe to share their struggles, their illnesses and trust that the producers will be respectful in the way they do so. That the show has a following and respect strong enough to be trusted as a vehicle to raise awareness of the struggles these amazing humans go through just as any one of us could be going through. That the true supporters are exactly that - supporters, through thick and thin.

For real, so many people have no idea what it's like to be a worlds-level athlete. A lot of these kids are pushing through injuries midseason and barely holding it together. Some even have more complicated health conditions they battle like Malieya. They practice 5-6 days a week in season, usually after school for like 4+ hours every practice. It's like a full-time job on top of school. Usually by the time worlds comes around they've already been cheering for 9+ months. Even most professional sports don't compete for 9 months straight. I know we all expect perfection from them, but I wish some people recognize they're 12-18 year old kids. As much as we want to see them be perfect sometimes they're injured or mess up. They're human... they're kids... not cheerbots. Some people forget that.

I have low iron and I completely see where she’s coming from. You physically CANNOT feel your body. And you get so so so dizzy and can’t even see anything. When I tell you the feeling is unexplainable it really is. It is awful you feel like your watching other people but your not apart of it your just there with them in the mix.

This breaks my heart even more for Malieya. I’ve been anemic without knowing it for a while too and just trying to live normal life was a constant struggle and one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. I can’t imagine doing competitive cheer. I also know the overwhelming frustration of having your body hold you back from something that you should be able to do otherwise. It’s out of your control, but feels like it should be within your control... and it’s hard for the rest of the world to see it too. I can’t imagine going through something like this so young. I hope she finds happiness and regains her confidence again. What a strong girl!

omg I had the EXACT same issue as Malieya. First semester at college I got sick with the freshman plague and then when I started feeling better the anemia kicked in, my heart rate would jump to 115 just from getting out of bed. Ended up needing a blood transfusion to feel better! Malieya girl I feel you 10000% it is so hard to keep going and pushing physically when you have anemia and its also dangerous! I hope she's taking care of herself and her health !!

I feel for Malieya! I'm anemic as well and have been on medication for over a year now just to keep my iron levels up. Managing anemia is not easy and it is extremely hard on the body due to the lack of oxygen. Props to her for still competing at Worlds while internally feeling ill.

I have low iron and have been taking iron tablets for over a year now. I can understand trying to play sport while being so fatigued and getting dizzy and it is extremely hard (I do not do cheerleading, I play netball). I can’t even imagine how hard it would be to have all that pressure on you while you deal with it.
