Al Pacino was different in all three Godfather’s. In the first one, he was a personable man and very human knowing of what he’s getting into. By the time his father is looking into the fish aquarium and he’s announcing the move to Nevada, he remains a cold, stolid, and businesslike man. In his personal life, he’s cold and cruel. In part 3, he’s become a human being again, outgoing, jovial, and caring, but haunted by his cruel ways from before.

Remember that Michael Franzese is a bit biased when it comes to Henry Hill (Liotta's character). He admits that it's a good movie and good performance but Scorcese's Henry Hill was portrayed in a much better light in the movie than the actual guy in real life. It's basically the movie Henry Hill would make of himself - not accurate when it comes to Hill.
