Rachel Dolhun, MD, movement disorder specialist and vice president of medical communications at The Michael J. Fox Foundation, discusses dystonia, an involuntary muscle contraction that causes painful, awkward postures. Dystonia can be a symptom of Parkinson's, but it also can be a disease by itself.
The "Ask the MD" series is intended as an educational resource for people with Parkinson's and their loved ones. Please consult with your personal healthcare provider to address individual medical questions.
The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research is dedicated to finding a cure for Parkinson's disease through an aggressively funded research agenda and to ensuring the development of improved therapies for those living with Parkinson's today. www.michaeljfox.org
We gratefully acknowledge the Steering Committee members of our Patient Disease Education Consortium in conjunction with The Albert B. Glickman Parkinson's Disease Education Program and Charles B. Moss Jr. and family, whose sponsorship allows us to create and distribute materials, while preserving our track record of efficiency in stewarding donor-raised contributions for maximum impact on Parkinson's drug development. Sponsorship support does not influence MJFF's content perspective or panelist selection.

Curling of my toes was my first symptom with parkinsons. My ankle on my left side was next. Since then I've had problems with spurs n stress fractures. Not great when job needs me to stand. Last winter I got stuck in the rain when both feet decided to cramp. I hate young onset

After hitting 50, I started experiencing what I think is dystonia in my foot. It usually only happens with the the left one. Is that common? It also only seems to happen at night so far. The foot muscles tighten, and then will go into some crazy bent positions. It is extremely painful. Now, I have had night spasms in my calf muscles since I was a child. Not every night. Usually if I have been more active during the day. Over the past few years I learned getting up and walking will usually stop the spasm. Obviously with your foot bent sideways you cant stand up. Has anyone here discovered a stretch or position that will stop the cramping in the foot?

Iv noticed people with fast twitch muscles and quick movements in characteristics in younger people, (think about the quick movements in MJFs normal moving around as a kid and young man, also Robin Williams, thats what aim referring to)they developed Parkinson's, I have fast twitch muscles and now I have been showing symptoms the last couple years. Any body else notice it?

I'm not sure if it's a twitch in muscles, but I do notice that I often walk very fast sometimes to the point where I'm walking into walls accidentally. I have had dystonia in my left eye since 2013 since I was 28 when I woke up on an early morning in December and I thought my eye was exploding or that I was having an aneurysm. It feels better when I get outside walking in the fresh air or if I eat fruit or peanut butter. I don't have any other symptoms that would point to Parkinson's so I'm not sure if mine is benign or if it's just a longer progression. Let's just say I'm keeping an eye on it and any changes that may occur.. No pun intended.
