Environmental factors - who you are, where you live, the air you breathe and the food you eat - can play a key role in Parkinson’s disease (PD). Emerging research is showing that pesticide and pollution exposures can interact with a person’s genetics and contribute to the disease. And there are other environmental contributors (that may be less obvious) that can affect the development and progression of PD. Economic differences can affect access to the right doctors or access to grocery stores and gyms. Psychosocial factors, ranging from stress to racial bias, contribute to health outcomes.
A variety of populations are disproportionately affected by these environmental factors, leading to health disparities that demand attention and action.
