hey there, old time windows xp tablet pc edition user here. actually the system decides whether to install the tablet edition or not according to the product key. so you have to enter a valid tablet pc edition key during the installation process. i guess you're familiar with finding such a thing online! btw. iirc there were once install cds that would also install media center edition, given the respective key.

Tablet PC's features are tied to the product key! You need a valid Tablet PC product key for the installation to work. Otherwise, it doesn't bother installing Tablet PC items and defaults to Professional.

Was going to say this aswell, pidgen creates a special SKU I'd that's used by the setup handler components. I'm 100% sure of this as I've built the tabletpc and media center stuff in an own build of XP

@@taylorwoolston8856 If you put a Media Center key into a Professional disc, it'll install Media Center components, but it will fail activation before it hits the OOBE, giving the "You need to activate your copy of Windows with Microsoft before you can log on" error immediately.

Tablet PC doesn't use a hardware check, but it does do a serial check. If they use a WinXP Pro key it will be just WinXP Pro.

@@MichaelMJD That's because the 1st disc in a Windows XP Tablet PC or Media Center Edition install disc set is just a regular Windows XP Professional disc. That's why the branding on the installers is for Professional during the 1st and 2nd setup stages. Each XP Pro install contains INF files for Tablet PC and Media Center, which are installed only if the product key SKU matches. Those INFs then require files which are usually on the 2nd disc (CMPNENTS folder), but they can also be placed on the same disc as the rest of the Windows install.

Actually, the way the installer determines whether to install the Tablet PC perks or not is actually based on something much more simpler than a hardware check: the product key. And since you didn't input any, it only installed regular ole Professional. So definitely something to revisit in a future vid imo

If the license file got corrupted, I bet it's something to do with your USB drive, which means it could have affected that Bootcamp 2.1 installer as well.

In order to install Windows XP Pro as TabletEdition, you must provide a special Product Key during installation process. The key is in ... The Key itself, it determines whether Pro or TE will be eventually installed (if I recall correctly, there's actually one other windows version supplied with WinXP Pro installation image).

I’m 5m24 in so I don’t know the answer yet but from my experience, it depends on the product key as to what the Windows will install. If you put a valid product key in for Tablet PC edition, it should have asked you to insert CD 2, it’s the same for Media Center edition. If you don’t put a valid key in, it just installs regular XP Professional.

Installing XP on later hardware is always a fun time, especially nowadays after bit rot has set in and it's become next to impossible to find XP compatible drivers for anything. Good on you for sticking through despite all the hurdles!

8:48 It doesn't do any hardware check on this subject. You really need a Tablet PC install media to install Tablet PC edition, but you also MUST enter the right serial key just for Tablet PC edition in same channel (OEM, Retail, VL etc.) that you're gonna install for ACTUALLY installing Tablet PC edition. If you skip entering serial key, it just installs regular copy of Professional. With that, I able to install Tablet PC edition on my desktop PC and my laptop which they don't have any single touchscreen support.

If you want, you can try again with entering right serial key (that's trial and error as you need to find working key via Googling) just for Tablet PC. If you also want, you can post a update video to this video. And if you install VL copy, you must enter VL key and it's also valid for OEM and Retail keys (OEM key on OEM install media and Retail key on Retail install media etc.).

Half life went off screen at max res be ause you didn't have your actual display set to that. Menus are fine, but gameplay will Always break if the screen res doesn't match the game res. Windows XP quirks are fun

Unfortunately that touchscreen isn't recognized by Windows as a proper HID touch screen. All events from the touch panel are perceived by the OS as mouse input. HID touch screens require Tablet PC components on Windows, as they translate touch input to mouse events. Tablet PC shows a keyboard button hint when you tap a text field, but that doesn't happen when clicking with a mouse. This also enables Windows to do other things, like the virtual mouse that's present in Windows Vista and 7. Also an HID touch screen wouldn't have worked in 2nd phase of setup, as Tablet PC components aren't installed yet.

i think notepad file corruptions are pretty common. a notepad file that i have put on an external hard drive also had some of the special characters (ğ,ü,İ,ş,ç,ö) just swapped with some other wrong character.

You know on the self extracting archive, you could have placed it in a new folder then you use seven zip to extract it in the newly created folder then went into device manager and installed the drivers that did not install it would’ve been much easier than having to download another CD because all that self extracting archive is doing is extracting itself to a different location but if you use seven zip you eliminate that process entirely

Hiya!! So I have messed around with this era of MacBooks before and I was actually able to download the drivers from Boot Camp in Mac Os. I believe it is in the top bar with the apple menu in one of those options while in boot camp you can download the driver to a folder from apple's servers. I am not sure if this still works but apple is pretty decent with keeping their old legacy stuff like that for a while. However if you do have a Mac Os X 10.5 install disk then you should have the Windows XP ones on there

1:29 I didn’t realize there were versions of MacOS where the bootcamp assistant didn’t download the drivers for you. The screen you’re getting says to use the OS X install disc. Interesting. My first experience with Bootcamp was when I got my 2011 iMac and it worked perfectly.

But to me if you really want to download the specific version of Windows XP Tablet Edition from the internet archive, then the best option is to check the checkbox in the filter list for the creator section to make sure only Microsoft is selected so all of the results are from Microsoft

Windows XP SP3 added the ability to bypass product key entry, at least for the fully-purchased-product edition. It was meant to bring parity with Windows Vista's installation process. In both OSes, you'll have to enter a valid product key to activate the OS, but bypassing it makes it convenient for short-lived systems.

There's a tablet calibration control panel in XP in the control panel however I am not sure it is included outside of the tablet PC versions but I could be wrong. It would make sense it would be included for touchscreen displays but not all the other touch stuff.

I have an Acer C100(Wacom) with XP Tablet PC edition, but I cannot install the tablet part. The key on its bottom no longer works. Now what? I can install XP without key, but it never asks for CD 2. Without the tablet stuff, Wacom does not work. Any help would be appreciated.

That USB drive is probably sus given your issues with the license and your bootcamp file. I had the same issue just the other day trying to copy install files over to an old G3 power mac with USB 1.1 but no working ethernet. I'd suggest you replace your USB drive. So many weird issues in the past I've been able to pin to cheap/defective USB drives over the years...

I am still trying to understand the corrupted file. Usually when these flash chips lose bytes (like my "alzheimers thumb drive" does after less than an hour) it's random bytes, not a continuous string like seen in the text file. Where did the corruption come from?
