Yeah, I agree that windows XP was so good, so beautiful and kind of futuristic to me. I am a newer generation person who doesn't grow up with windows XP. My first computer back then was running on windows 7. But when I try installing windows XP on a virtual machine and explore a little bit, I am really impressed like wow, this OS looks so good for that era. The user interface looks so good. I don't know, why now Microsoft changed everything.

amazing how much just only in the last 100 years alone or let alone 20 years how much technology has advanced. as a kid we barely had tape players switching to cd, and then long after that was having smaller digital storage pods to play music etc etc.

About 12 years ago I bought a used Q1Ultra P which was the last model and has a 1.2ghz core solo cpu. Gave it a boost in power over the atom based ones. I upgraded it to Windows 7 and used it as a network troubleshooting device. Wifi Radio scanners and such software. I used it for that for almost 10 years before retiring it for a smaller one of those pocket size PCs that were trendy a few years ago. Surprisingly it still carries a charge on the battery. As a handheld pc that I could map out wifi signals and having physical ethernet port for doing things like packet sniffing when troubleshooting networking gear it worked great. It has an extra slot that was meant for a cellular modem. I installed an upgraded wifi card and modified it with external antenna ports. Someone commented that I looked like a ghostbuster with a pke meter when I was doing a site survey once haha.

Also low cost netbooks like the MSI Wind, Asus Eepc, and others were also flooding the market around this time. This Samsung Q1 seems a little cooler, though, too bad it was so expensive. :)

I had an early AT&T 3G dongle too and felt like I was living in the future considering this predated smart phones and tablets by years. This machine turned so many heads and was such a great investment back then. Saved me from so many hours of boredom because it was capable of so much in terms of media and gaming. I get that the Windows experience did not translate well into mobile, but I still get annoyed how Microsoft gets little credit for mobile and tablet computing. They were doing this stuff way before apple. Apple perfected the user experience for sure, but the hardware and general concept was done by MS and PC makers for years before the iPhone or iPad.

Well the issue is that they aren't for the same public. Umpc where for tech savy business ppl while Apple targets general audience. For sure Apple didn't really invent stuff but they where smart at making it mainstream. Now it's for Microsoft to try to bring it back and I hope they will try harder as I like my windows tablet and might be interested in gaming portable pc.

At the end of the day, all those products ended up in the "failure bin" due to their low sales and no one remembers the fails. The iPad and iPhone sold like crazy, because, at the end of the day, the user experience is what matters. It doesn't matter that it runs Windows and all my stuff at the bus if it's not good enough to the point where I'd use it on the bus. And I say that while unapologetically loving the device on this video.

Hey man! I’ve bought several (and broken several) of these. For the battery, with it plugged in, remove and reinstall the battery. Make sure to slide the latch to lock it. I’ve gotten every one of my new in box ones to charge this way, even if they were stubborn. Beware that rear camera when removing the bottom. I have had a couple of casualties due to those…
@WinPC99
@WinPC99 9 ай бұрын
The rear camera is adhered to the motherboard with some adhesive. It’s not connected directly to the motherboard. It’s connected to the display assembly. You can gently pry it off of the motherboard if you want to take the board out (to remove the cmos battery, repaste, etc)

You could very much basically jump start the battery. Most of batteries I come across on older devices that are dead and show no charge it's likely from the BMC of the battery shut off due to low cell voltage. I've charged the cells themselves (by opening partially the battery) to access the leads and raw charge the cells to atleast 3.7v then plug the battery back into the device and try and charge. It's worked most of the time for me

be careful when cells reach a certain discharge threshold there is a risk of dendrite formation. This is why BMS disconnect and prevent charging. If dendrites pokes through the insulation you got a nice short if unlucky a thermal event.

7:30 It's a classic trick to speed up performance of an HDD under XP. HDDs partition by cylinder, and the closer to the center of the spindle you were, the faster your HDD would read and write, there were a few names for this practice like "Shimming", "Column Partitioning", "Partition Alignment", etcetera. So companies and smart IT Admins would make a generic small partition at a low cylinder number, and thus close to the spindle, install Windows there to force the fastest possible startup, and then expand the partition later. It seems like instead of expanding the partition, they just used a second partition to make the remaining space available, which can still be helpful to have already done if you know about the trick and plan on taking advantage for your applications too.

The reasoning for that “temp partition” is short-stroking, which isn’t nearly as dirty as it sounds. It’s used to identify the most performant sections of the drive- those closest to the edge, where the disk is spinning fastest and therefore access times will be fastest- and install the OS to those sections only to increase the perceived responsiveness of the OS

Great stuff! I got an Asus R2H kicking around, which is surprisingly similar. As for the battery: It might be worth leaving it plugged in for a whole day or even two - doesn't hurt anyway. If it is completely depleted, it might take ages to tickle-charge back up.
@laharl2k
@laharl2k 9 ай бұрын
the battery is most likely fine, but if the protection kicked in you will have to open it and charge and balance the cells with an external lipo charger. If you can open it non destructively and have someone that has a drone that uses common RC lipo batteries you could ask him to charge them back to 3V. The protection commonly works on the battery power itself, so if the battery self discharges to 0V the battery could still be recovered but the protection will be dead so youll have to charge the cell slowly, say 5mA until the voltage gets to 3V open circuit, and then you can charge them at 0.5C, though being so old and being overdischarged id stay around 0.2C, make it a 5 hours charge or so. It may give the cell time to self heal or something.

just a thought but I feel like the gaming experience could've been vastly improved by changing the display orientation to landscape flipped. that would've allowed you to use the analog stick for aiming the way people are used to and might've made other keybinds more easily accessible while playing since they'd be right below the d-pad / analog stick.

Omg! I remember this tablet! I got an amazing story to tell. Back when I was in the 5th grade getting ready to go to middle school, the school decided to try an all computer only course, and I decided to sign up for it cause I thought it was pretty cool. I got selected along with 59 other students for a total of 60, and we were given these Q1 tablets. It was an amazing idea on paper, but in reality, it was poor execution. Computers were slow turning on due to all the school software they had on em, and getting everyone connected to a program took forever. The school provided us a flexible keyboard mouse and casing so we didn't have to use the small keyboard/mouse. We even got to customize the cases we were provided. My dad actually spray painted mine silver, so it will be easy to spot. In the end, we only did the program for the first quarter of the school year before we reverted back to regular learning, but we got to keep the computers until the very end of the year. The very next year, the school ended up using the tablets among the 3 different grades moving forward.

I have a few of these. Absolutely love them. I bought em awhile back when they weren't well known and we're like 30 dollars on ebay

Never experienced but I miss UMPCs. More than smartphones and well great to see compared to Steam Deck, Aya Neo, GPD and more handhelds of today.

I actually found 2 of these while sifting through e-waste at my old job. Sadly both had screwed up gpu's. I really wished I kept one and attempted a bodge fix with a heat gun.

People mention the iPad all the time in reviews and i just dont get it. Back in the day an iPad would not do anything I'd need for my computer to do and this still holds true for me today. The iPad's software was and is so limited that it just can't cut it for me despite how powerful the processor is. It cant help me root my phone, it can't manage all my music, it can't convert them easily, the browser is a joke, there are MANY multimedia formats that it just straight up doesn't understand, no torrenting so i cant download whatever i want (especially back in the day), and the list goes on. No, the iPad would've been terrible for me back then.

Bought Q1 Ultra few months ago specifically to play strategies and adventures on a plane. I was lucky, my battery still holds like 4-6 hours of charge. And it's a beast for HOMM3. Yeah, that I was getting weird looks sometimes but it's totally worth it. My model came without webcams or SD slot, but it actually had 4G and TV tuner - Even with pull-out antenna!

I watched the entire video thinking about how interesting it would be to take the device and turn it into a front-end to control all the home automation and multimedia, such as "open Spotify in the home theater in the living room and put on this playlist", like a giant remote control hahah.

That was a problem with devices from the early 2000s and 2010s that have batteries that will die if not charged while the device sits turned off

This is a really cool form factor! I think it sill looks pretty modern. I like the split-blackberry style physical keys. If one of these could be upgraded to more current specs, (8 gigs of ram, decent CPU, upgraded graphics) I'd really like it.

I don't wanna know how an 800mhz processor and 1gb of ram would run Vista. It seems snappy with XP but Vista would probably be another story

I have a HTC Shift with the same Intel A110 800MHz (Pentium M Dothan) and 1GB RAM. It does run Windows Vista and 7 better than you'd expect, but more RAM and an SSD would help a lot. The 1.8" HDDs are REALLY slow
