Well, if I had you back in 1985 maybe Id be a Rock Star now. But TOO many teachers make this stuff so confusing with terminology or worse, they want you to keep paying for expensive lessons. Unfortunatley I lost motivation in my late 20s and now Its kind of bitter sweet to see how it works and how simple someone could have taught it. Thank you.

I may be one of the few people who was already well down the road doing very much the same mapping explorations, but you've added some nice insights to my toolkit. A couple things I would share (that might make sense only to you)... 1. I find it helpful to note that from any scale tone on any string (call it an anchor tone), there are three ways to consider 'where to go (up or down that string) from here? ' Thinking in three-note patterns, there is always one pattern where the anchor tone is the top note, middle note, and bottom note of the three. Taking a concrete example, using G on the 6th string, 3rd fret as the anchor, there is G, F#,E.... A, G, F#, and B, A, G. Those = an Z, Y and X choice. Similar things happen when you work through each scale degree. 2. keeping the above view in mind, it is helpful to connect the scale degrees to all the inversions of major and minor triads. 3. Both the above intertwine nicely with the CAGED system, and they break it into smaller pieces (octave chunks, vs. whole chords across the neck). 4. All of the above, create a kind of portable 'atomic' view of the larger 'molecular and polymeric' pictures that you have built so nicely. It's not that one is better than the other -- I'm just highlighting that there are 'shapes within the shapes' and tiny elements that thread through the larger ones (as I'm sure you are well aware). Cheers - thanks for your great work.

Thanks for the comment. You’ll see some of what you mentioned in further videos, but I still notice things I hadn’t considered before. There are certainly a lot of ways of viewing the fretboard and I advocate for whichever one sticks in a players mind the best. Some of my students resonated with approaches that completely mystified others, and vice versa. Whatever gets the music into the hands most efficiently, I’m for it.

Hi Michael - using this 3 note per string method for the full 7 note modes in addition to the minor and major pentatonic boxes has really helped my playing, so thanks for creating these videos. I think in this video at 4:47 the move from Y to Z from the 3rd string to the 2nd string should result in the Z shape being shifted up a fret.

All this 'grand unification' talk is getting me so excited 😂 I hope I take the time to combine these simple rules with the vertical and horizontal patterns so that I can stop thinking I rely on 'feel'. So far the info is incredibly on-point, you don't meander. You stay on topic and keep it succinct. Thank you sincerely. Side note: what I would call 'vertical across the fretboard' you have been referring to as horizontal. This has to do with the orientation of the player's eyes relative to the fretboard *while playing*.

The best explanation and demonstararion I've ever seen with immediate and practical application for soloing and song writing. QUESTION: At time code 43 you went from X to Y horizontally and only moved up one fret. Should it not have moved up two frets; one for X to Y and one for third string to second string?

I LOVE this method. It has transformed my inderstanding. I do have a question that came up in this video though. At 1:40 we have pattern Y in blue and then pattern Z in green . Then at 1:41 we have a pattern X above (higher up the fretboard) a pattern Y. They wouldn't go in that order would they? The patten X and Pattern Z should be swapped right?

01:47 there's an error - on high e string you've got 4 notes on 5 frets (2 green and 2 blue ones) - that doesn't exist in major scale
@dreastonbikrain18963 ай бұрын
Yes, but that is a human weird not an error in this method. According to the patterns when traveling to lower notes blue can only change to red, not green. So he just colored it incorrectly since he was focusing on the spacing number argument.

I really appreciate these videos as I was recently developing a system to name all the substring shapes myself, but this is way more developed! I’m wondering why you chose to focus on just the diatonic scale shapes, though? My thinking is that as many different combinations as possible should be named so that this could extend to any scale type (with some modifications)
@MichaelPillitiere3 жыл бұрын
Simplification. Non-diatonic scales add all sorts of caveats and exceptions to remember.
@adrian10723 жыл бұрын
Excelent material - just like the previous videos. Congratulations. I have two questions or maybe corrections if I may: #1 at 1:38 as you exemplify Rule n.2 over the 1st string, you place an X form after a Y form (to me, that adding should be another Y or a Z). The same way, you place a Z before that Y (to me, should be another Y or an X) #2 at 4:41, a Z is placed on the 2nd string (after 2 Ys), but it should be 1 fret UP (According to Rule n.1, vertical placement when you shift from 3rd to 2nd string) Thanks
@MichaelPillitiere3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah, #2 is an error. I didn't notice it until after upload. #1 is just to illustrate all different shapes out of context to fit everything on screen. Im glad you caught the error though! Shows how quickly you can begin to visualize the patterns on the fretboard.
