6:45 demonstrates the only 3 things you need to know: the two fret shift rules, the horizontal shape order, and the scale degree starting shapes. Everything else is specifics to help your brain fill any comprehension isuues.

Thanks for the content, not sure if you are aware but the most prominent review on your slide of your Amazon book is a crappy 1 star review. Might be worth editing.

I've played guitar for many years. Self taught... By no means proficient in anyway what so ever..or good either I just enjoy playing. I play mostly Hill Country Blues and the kind of Rockabilly Sun records Johnny Cash, Charlie Feathers vibe. But at 2:19 into the video.. I'm already completely lost am have no idea wth dude is talking about. If you told me I was watching a video on repairing computer chips, I wouldn't argue. So can anyone recommend a video I could watch before I watch this one so I'm not lost

The 3 NPS patterns go 1-2-3... down the neck, and across the neck its 1-7-6 for Ionian for instance. so going across the neck (crossing strings) Dorian would be 2-1-7, Phrygian 3-2-1, Lydian 4-3-2, Mixo would be 5-4-3 and so on. Use the number system. the numbers coincide with the scale degrees. its easier if you number the patterns 1-7, instead of xxx or xy or xyz.

Yes, definitely bought you more than a coffee! This is very helpful. The pattern is much easier to memorize if one considers it's just pairs out of walking backwards YY (7) ZZ (6) XX(X) (5) XY (4) YZ (3) ZX (2) and XX (1). Sorry if that's redundant to other videos, haven't watched yet.

Your voice sounds like Jigsaw and it helps because It provides a sense of urgency and importance before the inevitable "Do you want to play a game?" rolls out because you've realized my eyes have glazed over from my inability to grasp everything the first time around.

Wow, this is cool. Although, I've been playing guitar long enough to know scales and build scales in whatever position, it's still always cool to see a totally guitar-centric way of teaching theory. And this approach to teaching 3 note per string major scale patterns is really cool. The type of explanation you wish you would have had starting out as a young guitar player. So well done! and Thanks for this resource!

One question: Let's say I want to play in Aeolian mode in A (minor). Do I start the ZZ pattern on the fifth fret (A)? Or do I start on the 6th scale degree on a F# note?

This is great! I still find myself missing something. What i mean is , i understand the universality of the diagram...but..when i go to play a different root i.e. i change the start of the scale pattern, it just feels ..idk..too similar as in im almost pulled back to the original root...is there something im missing ..or an explanation of this? Anyone else experienced this? I mean this diagram is great, and it gets me to this point...i just need to know whats the next step to evolve past this. Please help. Thanks. 👍
@MichaelPillitiere2 ай бұрын
If you mean this happens when you’re trying to play a different mode, then yes, this is common. Your ear wants to pull you back to the major scale, because that’s what sounds ‘right’. As you spend more time with modes, you’ll begin to experience them as having their own unique flavor, and that tendency to want to shift out of the mode and back into major will fade. The reason for this ‘pull’ is in what are called tendency tones. The 7th of the major scale has a strong pull upward to the 1st, and the 4th has a strong pull downward to the 3rd.
@jasonrice25922 ай бұрын
@@MichaelPillitiere I can agree with you kinda. I say kinda because it's not the major scale, I'm not a twinkle twinkle little star dude, but it's the natural minor scale that gets me. Every time. That said, what you say is true , but for me it's either natural minor or straight up pentatonic.

what are the rules for melodic minor scales since they are different patterns Mr @Michaelpillitiere
@JeffBristow2 ай бұрын
I have started learning scales and have found this method to be amazing. It simplifies everything so much. I do have a question that I am hoping someone in the comments can give some guidance on. I have played the A Major Blues Scale which I believe is a pentatonic scale that doesn't seem to use the XYZ shapes or the XXXYYZZ pattern. How do blues scales or pentatonic scales get adjusted or correlate to this grand unification pattern?

Thank you, Mr. Pillitiere. I found you through reviews of Jonathan Boyd and I am so happy I did. I've been playing for more than 25 years, but I was never able to make the transition to lead guitar as I hate rote learning. I took lessons and lost interest when it seemed I had to memorize endless scales and modes. I've made more progress with your approach in two weeks than I've made in the last 20 years! Your algorothim is easy to remember and I can now jam to just about any key and in multiple modes. I've still got a long way to go, of course, but I can now focus on technique and fluidity without thinking about scales, etc. Thank you! It's been a long time since I had so much fun with my guitars!

This is the first time I have seen or heard 3 note per string patterns being explained correctly. It makes me think all of the other "teachers" are confused themselves or are too lazy to be simple . I know it sounds odd...simple should be just that. Simple. But you dont get that here on you tube at all. I learned this years ago but found it to be a pain in the ass and robotish so I forgot a ton so I am checking out modes again. You are 100% spot on friend!

asking for a little help. I love what I am watching, hearing and learning, but in order to continue I need someone's assistance. This is all pretty new to me, so thanks in advance for any help. Still not understanding how we get in B flat, scale degree 3 how that starts on a D or in the other example at 7:15 in the video how F sharp equals G sharp in scale degree 2. I cannot continue until I understand. If someone can explain it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
