Hey everyone! This is one of my favorite videos to date because of how much incredible information is here! Someone asked me recently what I would do differently if I started my boudoir business over from the very beginning. Before I had a website or had shot my first session as a beginner photographer, what would I recommend as a place to start. Shoot a lot, get a solid boudoir brand, get some boudoir albums as samples to show your clients, spend some money on education, don't waste your money on too much gear, figure out your why and figure out how you market best and double down on it!

So I’m very very new. I haven’t had a real photo shoot yet. I have always taken pictures but now I have an actual nice camera and I’m learning how to use it. I have taken several online classes and came across your videos. I LOVE them. Just started today and already learned a lot. I live in a VERY small town where everyone knows each other. And there are like 5 photographers around here already. One boudoir photographer (personal I think her pictures are terrible) but people know her so they go to her. I’ve only lived here for two years and struggle with getting out there and being super social. I’m trying but I get a lot of “maybes” then nothing. I’m still trying though and I know with watching these videos I’ll learn even more and have amazing pictures.

This is my first time hearing the word “ “boudoir” , never knew that was the name of this style ,,, this to me is a private celebration of a woman’s femininity, the moment to almost break out into this beautiful celebration of her body , wow! I feel left out ,, I love all the darker photos ! Great vid

I agree with you get the 50mm if you are just starting out with gear and on a budget. But if you are buying a camera see if you can get a camera with a kit lens might cost the same used or a little. Sometimes you just need to go a little wider.

I have my own dedicated studio that I use and rent out. I am way past the age of starting a photography business so I shoot for fun and a ew bucks. To me, the issue with starting out now is not what to do but how not to become overwhelmed by all the options, choices, and products.

Thank you so much for your videos, I have been watching so many. I have no experience but am just running with it. I connected to a local photographer who will help me out. I wanted to ask, is there a video on talking about editing? I’m mostly nervous for this. I seen one where you say stick to one editing style for a month and (check) will do this. But where do i even edit? And how big of a memory card do i need for a session? Thanks in advance for all your help. I’m buying your contract this Friday. I have friends and family to model for me but will recreate the process as though they are paying clients for practice.

Hi Michael, these weeks I'm working on my website but I'm starting to feel lonely and unmotivated because I didnt book any work. But if I book work I will no longer work on my website. I guess I just wanna share that dilemma and mostly just check if you've ever bumped into 'motivational problems' like that and how do you get real with yourself in cases like that. My site will be f*cking gold by the way, WHEN I've finished it 😅 Very 'why'/mission driven.
@MichaelSasser

All the time! I talked about it on my Italy Q&A. My recommendation is to congratulate yourself on things non results based, but action based. Get amped that you finished your website, what an accomplishment! It's a piece of the puzzle to book more clients. Think of it this way and you'll keep moving.

Hi Michael, your videos have been so helpful. I have only had my camera for a few months and have been doing mostly family portraits and kids. So boudoir is an entirely different avenue but I'm super excited to try it. I have 4 friends willing to be my first models, yay!! My question, do you ever do sessions with larger women? I used to be 100 pounds heavier and since I've lost so much weight I really want to reach out to bigger ladies and empower them to embrace who they are. They deserve the right to feel beautiful about themselves too. Just looking for some tips on how to make them feel comfortable.
@MichaelSasser
@MichaelSasser 5 жыл бұрын
Hello Samantha! I love to hear you're jumping right into it! I think we focus too much on the difference between weight sizes. I've photographed curvier women who owned it, and I've photographed thin women who were ultra insecure and nothing I could say would get them to accept their beauty. If you go into with the wanting to better their lives like you just said... You're beautiful, you deserve to feel beautiful and you are perfect the way you are, let me show you... You will be able to empower them through the process. Check out instagram.com/vcboudoir Her words are very inspiring. Best of luck!

Hey Tomislav! Thanks for watching. Let me ask you this. How many clients do you a year to support yourself? 50? 75? Sometimes we think we have to shoot everyone to be successful. If you think there are 75 people each year within 30 miles of where you are who want your portrait services, you can specialize. You don't have to, but it worked for me here in LA, and it worked for me in Denver, and I know 100 other boudoir photographers in cities around the US who it works for.

@@MichaelSasser I live in SE Europe, and I could have over 150 clients a year if I would shoot for free. Photographers are not appreciated at all over here. Hey!!! You no drinka coffee? What's matta you? ;-/ * Seriously, you're right about the difference in King Supers and Starbucks coffee being logo and brand. When Mercurys were still being made by Ford, you could buy a part in a Ford dealer for $10, the Mercury dealer would sell the same part for $17, and the Lincoln dealer would sell the same part for $25. Oh, I buy the Kroger coffee at King Supers because it tastes as good as any other for about 1-2 to 1/3 of the fancy branded coffee. But you wouldn't know about that. Coffee's good for you! It makes your hair white and teeth curly, or something like that.

Question that no one seems to talk about.... what do you ask your clients to bring or what do you offer clients to wear?!?! I'm in a small Mormon town where people think you have to be nearly naked to do boudoir.
@MichaelSasser
@MichaelSasser 5 жыл бұрын
Hello Jordenne, this starts with you educating the client. Show them your pictures as examples and how they don't actually have to be naked. Explain it on your website, talk to them about it when you are on the phone or in person. There is so much educating your client that goes into this because they don't know what they are really getting into at first. Hope that helps!

This is easily the hardest part! I have some content about this coming out soon, but the basic idea is you have to make it something they might miss out on. You're offering mini shots to two women only, this month, and then you're going to charge XXXX, if they are interested, message you back fast because you've really out to a lot of people. Let me know how that works!

Great video and even better advice! You're very easy to watch and listen to. The biggest thing I struggle with is how to set up boudoir/glamour photoshoots when I don't have my own space as well as finding models interested in this sort of photography, I'm too nervous to approach people outside of my friend group without having a portfolio established!

Blake thanks Blake! Not having your own space is tough, but it can be done! Rent Airbnb, check peerspace, hotels, friends place. And I cover this in my course, button finding people to shoot, basically what I said at the end of this video, instagram, model mayhem, friends of friends, Facebook groups. Your going to have to put yourself out there a little bit if you want this to happen!

Any advise on setting up those initial photo-shoots? How do you get folks to buy into something unproven?
@MichaelSasser
@MichaelSasser 5 жыл бұрын
You have a few options, but the simple answer is that it is a numbers game. Message a ton of people, show them examples of what you want to shoot. Watch my how to find models video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3THioNqrsqYo9k

Great videos. Question: Who hosts your web site? Squarespace?, Wix? I ask this because I know you recommend SEO and I think web hosting might matter. I haven't heard you mention that. Thanks for all that you do. I am getting my Boudoir started.

Hey Thomas! I use Squarespace. I don't know which is best. I think if you know more about web, then Wordpress is best. But if not, squarespace is best. Hope that helps!

Can you make a video about pricing your work? I feel like as a beginner I’m probably not charging enough but I also know I can’t charge as much as more qualified photographers.

Hi! I'm new to your channel and I'm also binge watching your videos. Quick question: I'm launching my business soon and I have a partnership with a real estate brokerage to photograph their properties, that's mainly how my business is gonna get started (because I was a real estate agent with academic photography experience and I used to photograph all of our properties). But I feel SOOO drawn to boudoir, but I've never done it :( Do you think it's possible to do both and still market yourself on both fronts? Other photogs are welcome to reply as well!

Renato is right, separate the brands so people who are looking for real estate will find it, and people who are looking for boudoir will find it too.

I'm really good at whining, complaining, staying away from people, and being horrible at understanding internet technology and social media formats. How do I implement this to help my business grow? I haven't yet mentioned how terrific I am at procrastination, laziness and despairing. PS. As usual, good advice, great video. More helpful to US-based photographers, but the general idea is to universal.

Great advice ..Thank you! I am starting a new portfolio (Bourdoir) and found this helpful. Just one question. Did you pay for the first girls you photographed for a show of work, this seems to be my most difficult hurdle to cross. Should I pay for models or are there other ways? My question really "How do you get girls to work (trust) with you when you have nothing to show?"
@MichaelSasser
@MichaelSasser 6 жыл бұрын
Good question Marco! You can certainly pay for models. It is the easiest way to make sure you get someone in front of your camera. Ask around a lot, friends, friends of friends, instagram etc. You will get a lot of "no's" but you will also get some "yes's". There is more information about it in my course if you decide your ready for that step. Hope that helps!

Good question! I think a used 6d and a 50mm 1.8 would do great to start. Under 1k and you'd have the look of all the fancy cameras.

Hi Michael, thanks for the video. I looked into the vendors you suggested for albums. My images are primarily black and white and it's always a challenge finding companies that can print b&w well. ZNO looked great until I asked about their b&w printing. (I did not ask Floricolor) Are you able to get good quality b&w from anyone? If they use color photo paper, the gray balance is never right. Thanks.

@MichaelSasser 5 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure David! I rarely print black and white. I hope you find what you're looking for. I would just do a google search for that specific kind of printing. Good luck!

KZbin Main great question! The courses are as is. It’s possible that I could update them with more info, but not likely. The accelerator course is already an update of a course I released earlier this year. I hope that answers your question! If you purchase it and then have questions, fe free to reach out to me and I’ll be happy to answer them!
