Great share! Might I ask if you know why Canon has opted not to include IS in this lens? The new 1Dx Mark II and the 5D Mark IV (my desired camera body) are also without IS. How will these camera/lens pairings perform without IS in the hands of a non pro such as myself?

This is the first of your videos that I have watched. I recently purchased the VIII to use with an EF to RF adapter for my new EOS R6. I have been impressed with the lens overall. I shoot a lot of real estate and generally use f8 so I was also looking at the f4 version but chose the new f2.8 VIII to give me more flexibility for other uses. It appears to be a good performer in low light with minimal distortion that I have to deal with in post. Good job on the review.

Good lens in general, but the problem with the vignetting is, that it introduces a lot of noise when corrected digitally! We're speaking about a push of more than 4 EV, which is needed to fully correct that corner shading at f/2.8. So for me the best Canon wide angle zoom remains the 16-35 f/4L is usm, at least in terms of price/performance!

If you were to buy just one lense out of 2, 16-35 f/2.8 iii or 24-70 f/2.8 ii Which one would you choose. Let’s say you want to use that same lense for events and landscapes. I’m a beginner but I really like photography and I always prefer to spend money once than twice like for example I get people telling me sometimes to start with something cheap but then I’d have to sell to upgrade, I rather just buy the good stuff from the beginning. I just bought a Canon 5D Mark IV and a 70-200mm f/2.8 III but now I need(or want) something in the wide angle end. I mainly like landscape photography but I also take pictures every month of my 7 month old baby( I was using a 50mm with an 80D for this) but this last time I did it with the 70-200 and I really like the outcome.

Maybe depends if you have the 5d4 or 5ds/r? For example if i have the 6d with only 20mps that sharpness difference is not that noticeable? And im coming from tamron 15 30 to be exact...

The VII is going to be noticeably less sharp even compared to your Tamron even on your 6d. This shouldn't be a problem if you're shooting events as opposed to landscapes.

I buy this len already, it's a fantastic wide angle zoom len from canon. I have problem with a vignett at 16mm f2.8 because I use this len with canon 5d3 But when I update new EOS utility software from canon usa website and correct lens in eos utility. Then the vignett its almost gone.

Michael The Maven I try to use this len on Sony A7 series with metabone adapter. It create massive vignett 16mm F2.8 on jpg files. It can be fix if shoot RAW and process lightroom. However it difficult to fix in video scean.

There is no use from correcting vignetting issues in camera body as it works only for JPG

great review Michael i would like your views on the Panasonic 100 to 400 zoom. Still awaiting them to arrive here in the UK so a heads up would be great on your views on this lens. Looking to buy as using all my L series lenses with the Metabones Speedbooster has been a disaster with it locking up the GH4 and lens focus hunting. Customer Service from Metabones in Hong Kong has been crap and they have had three attempts to fix still not fixed. thanks Malkie

Michael, Please do test Canon 16-35mm f2.8 L III and Tamron SP 15-30mm f/2.8 Di VC USD Lens. I have Canon 16-35mm f2.8 L II and Tamron SP 15-30mm f/2.8 Di VC USD Lens, i tested and Tamron won, i would like to see test comparing with Canon 16-35mm f2.8 L III and with 2nd version too, you can do yourself and to see that tamron 15-30 better than 2nd version of Canon 16-35mm.

i went from 16-35i to 17-40 when my tripod fell over and snapped the lens straight off the body. Based on cost and needs at the time. If the viii is larger than the vi, which was MUCH larger than the 17-40.. well if portability is an important factor, this viii lens must be a beast !! Just ordered the 16-35f4 to replace my aging 17-40. See how it goes :)

What about the 16-35mm f4 it was noted to be sharper than the 2.8. That is why I bought if for Real Estate Photography. We dont really use the f2.8 becuase we need a better DOF. Should I upgrade?

I'm still disappointed by the Version III, and the Version II was so bad that it should *_not_* be considered an L-Series or professional lens! Do *_not_* test "edge sharpness" of any of these 16-35mm Canon zoom lenses by photographing things up close - within a yard or two. Check edge sharpness on things further out, or even all the way out at infinity. *_Then_* you will see that this new Canon 16-35mm lens is still an expensive disappointment. Check out Nikon's 14-24mm zoom (which has been around for years, replacing the 12-24mm) and you will see a _stellar_ wideangle zoom.

when you get close to your subject the plane of focus is not flat. in fact the plane of focus is never been flat for any other lans but in wide angle lenses this issue is more pronounce. The plane of focus is circular with same distance of aperture.

The 16-35mm f2.8 II was _not_ a professional lens - the results and the edge sharpness fall-off was unacceptable. The Version III is much better. The Version II simply did not perform.

Initially when I saw it, I was like "this is a deal breaker", once I had my software updated I was like "Oh, everything is ok!"

Through EOS Utility App. Its very quick and easy to do. Connect Camera, Open app, select lenses, click on lens you want and ok. Ill have a short video coming soon.
