Fascinating, love the practice of passing down the music face to face. Gosh, that adds a whole other level of importance to each song for each player. Song versions nuances, as taught through the generations, what a super way to preserve the purity of the music.

So, nobody listened to them? Or the listeners were duh? Please, the moment they play, anybody can HEAR their "secret" tuning. Sure you got the how-would-they-do-dat-effect. Like tuning down the B string a bit, because equal temperament is a compromise and you hear that, from the day you start listening.

Using only the thumb and index finger is common in Slack Key and shouldn't be construed as entry-level, as some music is simply easier to play with that technique.
