I love the way Kelly puts her all into every song she sings. She pours her heart into it. I have heard this song many times. In January through March of 2019, Kelly went on tour and sang this song every show. Her father passed away within the last year and she had a hard time singing this song then. Please watch Kelly on March 30th singing this song. It was very special! Thanks for reacting to this song!

Poor Keith urban. If I’m not mistaken, this was weeks after his father died - who had alcohol issues, so obviously not a perfect childhood for him. And yes, I think he’s thinking of his own dad, his own kids, and feeling for Kelly too. Kelly’s emotion gets me, but I hate to see men cry - not because it’s weakness, but because they are raised not to, so when they do, they are really feeling bad.

This wasn’t the debut of that song. It was a track on one of her albums. For this performance, she slowed it and stripped it down…the “unplugged” version of it. This was an incredible performance, especially for those of us who already knew the other version, and knew how fun and bubbly Kelly always is. For her to show this much pain was unexpected and broke our hearts.

Miki, your reaction and assessment of this song by Kelly Clarkson was insightful in so many ways; technically, emotionally, tonally, and so many nuances you noticed and shared with your audience. I normally listen to classical music and just recently discovered Kelly Clarkson. I became an instant fan and one of things that you mentioned that she always imbues her songs with is emotional connection with the listener. You explained some of how she does this, and whether Kelly is singing a song in big full high voice or whispering, her emotion and beauty of the sound of her voice always comes through. No matter what she sings, it sounds as though they were written for her. She is truly one of the greatest singers of all time and you explain so skillfully and clearly the magic in singing that connects with the listener. You are a great coach indeed!

I think it is important to note they were all going through their pains, as do we. Keith's dad did die recently. They all try to hide their deepest pains that this song allows you to hear it in words. I think that Kelly is so real and kind that it makes one so sad for what she had gone through, and the fact those pains never go away.

I’ve watched that video a hundred times or more... In this video, I think we see an artist at the full extent of their powers... voice, writing, execution, and everything. It is perfect. As far as J-Lo... I imagine that is the face she had to wear when she was on the block and had to be strong even when she wanted to break down. And Keith.... this song, and how he reacts, reminds me of when I heard Tonight, I Wanna Cry by him.... the piano, the voice, the purity of emotion... it’s all the same, and he feels it.

"Piece by Piece" hits Kelly hard because it tells the story of a father leaving his child when very young, an experience that was real for her growing up. Clarkson's parents divorced when she was a kid, and from there, her relationship with her father became strained. There was so much raw emotion in this performance, that it made everyone cry. I still break down crying when I hear this song or see this performance because I can relate to what she went through. Kelly was also VERY pregnant with her second kid so of course her hormones and emotions were on overdrive.

I appreciate the way that you break down your thought process because there are a lot of videos that people watch where just like what you said they’re looking for that emotional connection and the vocal coach is completely not in tune with the emotional performance at all like they are soulless and emotionless. I think that people get angry at that because they want the vocal coach tune into and comment on the emotion behind the performance.

Think about it. That had to be the hardest place in the world for Kelly to sing that song. It's where she started out. Where she became famous. It's what made her dad want her again. He never even would have tried to see her again if it had not been for the venue she is singing at now. It was the most absolute vulnerable place that she could have sang that song from.

It's so personal and so moving and it's very rare to hear songs that are so open and so vulnerable like that. Some other vocal things you may want to discuss: My female vocalist friends have mentioned how much more difficult it is to breath while being pregnant. Being able to expand the diaphragm when a baby is pushing up against it must be difficult. Also, something that I have always struggled with and that relates to this video is prevention and treatment when sick. Kelly Clarkson had to be hospitalized during both her pregnancies due to hyperemesis gravidarum (excessive vomiting during pregnancy). Obviously I have never been pregnant, however if I am ever "sick" even once while having the flu (or other self inflicted causes), I lose my voice for several days. Often the top of my range for as long as a week. Despite some noticeable roughness to her voice, I am impressed at how she has a voice at all. Thank you for your videos. They are very well done.

Im a guitarist so I am familiar with the technical aspects of music but a singer I am not. That being said I believe she caught the very essence of what music is. The ability to convey. your thoughts and once in a while bare your soul for all to see. She did just when she started to cry. She was actually reliving that experience. I do not think for one moment she was concerned about when she should breath or cared one bit about her vocal range, nor do I think she was thinking of the audience. That is indeed a rare experience. I occasionally have seen people who are not technically proficient in their various form of musical expression, nor are they schooled in the art. But when I heard them express themselves, it hit me in the chest like a brick. I shouldn't say occasionally. It was a total of there times. Im sure there are more out there. Some songs should not be technically analyzed and just close you eyes and listen. This is one.

One thing about reacting to a performance that is emotional is letting it play to the and then reacting. Stoping makes it lose the emotional element. We don't want you to critic it. She starts by singing about how her father abandoned her when she was six yrs old, leaving her on the floor with the broken things, with missing pieces in her heart/soul. Then it talks about how her husbands loves her, picking up all the broken pieces and restoring her faith in men and fathers. Then it finishes with how her own daughter will never have to doubt her self worth, because Kelly and her husband love her and will never abandon her. "I fell far from that tree" - she is breaking the cycle, and will be nothing like her own father.
