On Christmas 2021, Band-Maid did a live streaming acoustic concert. 14 songs, all acoustic. The 10th song of the set was Sayonakidori... and Miku was even better on that than she was on the studio hard-rocker version from this reaction video. The stream archive can still be purchased and is available until March 25th. I highly recommend it. It may be the single best live show these women have ever done.

My take is that Band-Maid did the best onplugged show ever done, above and beyond anything from the 90s when playing unplugged was a thing. I've been playing the show every day since December 25th. It's damn good musically and it showcases Miku's and Saiki's vocal capabilities, and MISA and Akane joins in on chorus, never seen that before. Kanami use to sing chorus on live performances but not to the extent she does in the acoustic, Kanami has a voice of an angel :-)

Nobody who knows the band did ever doubt, that Miku is as a great singer as Saiki is. The proof already is the perfect harmonies, they create together. I really never did hear something in my ( music- ) life. Miku only has that sweetness in her voice which does not fit completly to Rock music as a lead singer, but she was clever enough to find out the perfect partner for vocals. Saiki is awesome and she also is getting much warmer in her personality, she is showing us. Who ever watched and listened to Band Maid Nippon, will notice how good this both fit together. I'm really happy, that I found this band some years ago and could watch them growing ( together ). 😍🥰 As a reactor stated before " Everything is just always great with this ladies"...I agree totally.

Thank you! If only Sayonakidori had an MV… more people would know about it. Actually every song in this album (or their discography) deserves an MV but they aren’t a big act with unlimited budget. Others are mentioning their Acoustic version of this song performed for last Christmas… not sure if you ever get a chance to hear that one but it’s lovely… Miku arranged it herself and performs without her teacher and lead guitarist Kanami.

Thanks Michal for reacting to this one. Yeah while most people talk about lead vocalist Saiki having surgery to remove polyps on her vocal chords, not much is mentioned that Miku had nodules removed from hers as well. Doing this song showed that Miku can do lead at a higher level than before and now she has a solo side-project called Cluppo. Around this time and I believe the album prior, Band-Maid decided to return a bit to their power-pop roots for some songs - so you get that bit of transition from Thrill to something like Sayonakidori. Albums between these two time periods are hard-rock plus influences from whatever they fancied at the time. If I recall correctly - Miku comes from an idol pop background and is an "Enka" fan, Akane came from an anime song fandom leaning towards metal and punk, MISA is a '70s-'90s rock purist leaning towards late '80s to early '90s alt-rock, Kanami was a mix of jazz, folk, prog rock and fusions and finally, Saiki was R&B, dance music and pop. Of all things in Band-Maid's personal playlist - Justin Bieber shows up!(don't know who's the one listening - I suspect Miku).

The things that you point out is some of the reasons why we love listening to them. It's poppy enough to get you hook on the melodies, while also being able to keep the song heavy and high energy. They're known for always giving a song enough variations so by the time the second verse comes, there is a renew energy to the song that keeps the listeners engage. Speaking of the album cover, if you check out their official music video for the song "Manners" there is a cool shot of them recreating the finger movements.

When singing this live at the acoustic concert she did lower the last note a little. She was playing guitar as well. In other live concerts the last note felt strained. But it reminded me of when The Eagles sang 'Take It To The limit' Randy Meisner who sang it originally with them hated singing it and almost lost his nerve with the high notes at the end. However great your voice is. Your confidence and brain still need to be convinced.

Band-Maid IMHO from two years of listening to them is they are hard-rock more than metal but can do metal very well. They definitely do not fall into a "metal only" genre, they're not metal cookie cutter sound. I call them a "multi-genre" band, the more you listen the more you may see. I know of no metal bands that can also bring tears to your eyes. this band can and does. Poppy choruses, metal drums, funky, bass, rock guitar and angelic harmonies, and all in one song too...Lol! Try "Blooming" for all that. Hope you stick around for more of Band-Maid, they never disappoint.

The acoustic is absolutely beautiful and has a sadder, more emotional feel. Miku is not "allowed" to use her falsetto in Sayanakidori but the band "let" her in the acoustic, lol. This is a desperate song and one of my favorites. The Shakespeare quote with the megaphone effect was Saiki. May I suggest Band-maid "Wonderland" . You will find they do a lot of pop-punk-rock-metal and even jazz mix in many songs. "Secret my lips" is another great one. I wasn't sure how you'd react, as an accomplished singer, to Miku's voice, which isn't as rich and sophisticated as Saiki's. I loved how you recognized the musical shifts, and I'd like to propose that you do another one of their newer songs with Sai-chan on lead vocals. That could include a lot of stuff, but off the top of my head I'd go with Domination Live or the Blooming MV. (and about 40 more but I'll control myself) Okay I'm editing this by adding that Miku is a goddess - she not only started the band, but writes really great lyrics for the band, but sings really well with Saiki - both harmony and in unison (usually an octave apart). Plus she is an 810 year old pigeon.

It impossible, I feel, to delve deep into this band and not be captivated by, and feel very fondly toward, Miku Kobato. So much drive, such a perky personality. You just root for her, and you smile at songs like these not just because they're fun, but because she's getting the chance to shine.

Nice reaction/analysis, thank you! There are a lot of instrumentalists among Band-Maid fans (and among the more analytical reactors that really dig the band) but not so many vocalists, so insights into the singing are greatly appreciated. I agree that 'Wonderland' is a good showcase of Saiki's ability, and also has great examples of what I think what you're really going to fall in love with: their harmonies, because their voices blend so well. The interplay between the two vocalists on 'Warning!' is really great too, as is all the layering in 'About Us,' which has a live video.

In Japanese you have no silent vowels and you have no accents on syllables. Very monotone language so you have Me-koo co-bah-toe, Me-sa, Saiki (rhymes with the shoe name Nike), Ah-cah-knee He-ro-say and Ka-nah-me Toe-no. The band's founder is Miku also known as small pigeon. She was the band's original vocalist but felt her voice lacked "potency" and so she tricked Saiki, lead vocalist, into joining at the last second. Miku and Kanami write the songs and this song translates as Songbird or Nightengale. I would suggest a slower song like Smile acoustic version to showcase Saiki's singing. Saiki had polyp surgery a couple of years back and it took a good voice to great. You have over 120 songs to listen to in their very impressive catalog and they are undertaking a big US tour later this year. I saw them perform live in LA in 2019 and l hold no current band in higher esteem. You have a new subscriber. Thanks for promoting Sacramento's favorite band.

MIKU KOBATO is the founder of BAND-MAID, and when she was 19, she dropped out of college in a year and came out alone from the local city of Kumamoto to Tokyo to become a singer. She took singing lessons and auditions while working at a maid cafe, and she formed BAND-MAID in her third year. At the time of formation, she was the lead singer, but she has joined Saiki because her voice is softened by the rock band they are aiming for. She became a backing vocalist and she had a guitar for the first time. She is an intelligent hard worker and has grown to this point in eight years.

Miku was actually the original lead singer of Band-Maid, but after the first few gigs, she realized that her voice was not really best suited to the type of music they wanted to play (too bright in timbre, not full enough). Saiki, in contrast has a much fuller voice and a darker timbre, better suited to the harder music they wanted to play. However, their voices work very well together in harmony, and amazingly well when Miku is doing counterpoint style vocals in the background of songs.

Hi Michal, the acoustic Christmas concert that people here are mentioning. It's with the concert streaming company: Zaiko (I tried to give the webpage address earlier but that made the message get taken down). The Christmas concert is just the band (for Covid isolation purposes) wearing brown and red, baggy street clothes and they perform in a business hall at a hotel near by the ocean. The stream has been archived until March 25 and a ticket for it lets you watch the concert as much as you want 'til it gets yanked. There's two versions of the stream, the first one is purely the concert. The 2nd has BAND-MAID commenting throughout and adding insight about doing the concert and thoughts of their 9 year career, but the comments really drown out the music - so that version is for after watching the first. One thing is you'll need to set up a membership with Zaiko before you can get the ticket.

"Thrill" was a relatively simple composition. This gives you a hint of the variety and quirkiness of their compositions. Kanami composes most of their songs, based on lyrics written by Miku. MISA has free reign to write her bass lines, with input from Kanami. One small comment, since you led with guidance on pronouncing your name: "Hirose" is pronounced with three syllables, not two: "Hi-ro-seh" with accent on the first syllable.

Miku wanted to make the end of the song more impressive, so Kanami, who composes and arranges it, rewrote it. Therefore, it seems that Miku had a hard time because it became too high-pitched. Miku has many fans who sympathize with her way of life. Check out MAND-MAID's subproject, Cluppo's Peace & Love. There is another fascinating side of Miku.

I'm not sure where I read or heard it but she apparently has almost perfect pitch. She was the lead singer when they started but they added Saiki pretty quickly. Having perfect pitch but not good enough technique to be able to sing/play in perfect pitch has to be one of the worst things possible if you're a musician.

We use the ch sound in your name almost exactly like that in Afrikaan as a g. Nice reaction, but try a live video next...you cannot believe the difference between their live stuff and studeo recordings...

*Michal,* if you really want a treat should check out their live stuff *BAND-MAID / FREEDOM* is a good one to start with.

Sayonakidori is an unusual choice for a second reaction. The song is about meeting love, employing a play on words, as “love” is “ai” and to meet” is “au/aimasu” (ai ni ai ..). I recommend the live version of Domination as your next view, and the live version of Wonderland as a showcase for Saiki’s vocal talents. BAND-MAID founder describes her concept for the band as “twin vocal.” She’s not really a backup singer. She was a J-pop singer before starting the band. Miku’s last name is Kobato (little pigeon), not Kobatu.

Two band-maid videos and two weird video choices. Who suggest these two for you to start ? There are PLENTY more suitable videos (expecially live) in order to see their talent. Sayonakidori is a good song, but is better the unplug live version for a reaction. And Thrill... was my first song too...but its OLD and even the band doesnt like it too much.

nice... great reaction and thanks for reacting to *Sayonakidori* - never thought that this track gonna be reacted to, because it's a hidden gem, IMHO. one of my favorite songs in the *Unseen World* album. anyway, from *Thrill* to *Sayonakidori* ... you did a great leap there, LoL. it's like from level 1 jump straight to level 64, so you -probably- definitely need to check their other tracks to understand how BAND-MAID has progressed so far and see how they better their best maybe you could try to listen to the live version of BAND-MAID to get the whole package of their sound quality and harmony with powerful performance. PS: in some of the videos at the BAND-MAID official channel, they provide captions for the lyrics translation or maybe you could just search the lyrics translation around the internet, if I may suggest you could go to kafka's jmusicbox [ kafkasjmusic.wordpress.com/tag/band-maid/ ].
