This plus the buttocks scandal had him flew away to start again in the US. Dabadie and him wrote this as an ode to what once was and about the hope of rekindling the flame one day. Not forget that Michel Polnareff is a first prize for piano at twelve of Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, the most prestigious conservatory of France and one of the most revered in Europe. For us in France, Michel Polnareff is a piano man as like Elton John for UK or Billy Joel for the US.

Glad you selected this one. Of course, everybody has his own preferences, and your list of French songs is pretty eclectic. There are tons of great songs, in different styles. The lyrics are pretty important in French and make a lot of difference between a nice or average pop song and a true masterwork in songwriting. You should check "La nuit je mens" by Alain Bashung, the ultimate 90's song. Or current artists like Benjamin Biolay. Great songs, lyrics, orchestration... So many styles in his range : check "Négatif", "Padam", "Miss Miss"... If you're in vintage/eighties : Mobilis in Mobile by L'affaire Luis Trio, one of his (late) mentors and friends. "Qui de nous deux" by M (2003) could surprise you too...

@ Le Basque et l'enclume Bonjour, Much of good suggestions here. thanks. I also wanted to speak about - M - (Aka Matthieu Chedid) with in more of "Qui de nous deux" he could react too on "Superchérie" (play of words between "super chérie" (super darling) and "supercherie" (deception, trickery), "Machistador" (concentration of words "macho", "conquistador", "matador" and of course also "adore" in only one word). But also "Mama Sam". But this last one in live is really very nice compared to what happens with the public, the sharing (available on " 100% Chanson Française" YT channel). For Bashung, I proposed him "La nuit je mens" longtime ago, but well ... I think "Ma petite entreprise" (with its very funny double way of lyrics) would be a good one for him musically. I propose an English translation, and just below translation, the explanations about the true meaning of the lyrics hidden under the first reading of the text on "Lyrics Translate": lyricstranslate.com/en/ma-petite-entreprise-my-small-company.html You have good tastes friend. :)

Le meilleur live video de Bashung, c'est Les Mots Bleus aux Musicales, guys. Let's not kid ourselves.

Masterpiece! Possibly Polnareff's most famous song, written as a love song to France while he was in exile (he was first in NYC, then moved to California; he changed the lyrics from "You're 6 hours away from me" to "9 hours" after he moved to California, in reference to the time difference). Absolutely gorgeous, masterful, haunting and beautiful. While it was written from the perspective of someone exiled away from France, it almost held a mirror to the often-conflicted emotions French people have about their country (a bit of a love-hate relationship at times). It calls to you, whether you are a French person in France or exiled in the US. The majestic music simply won't allow you to be indifferent. Love it or hate it, everyone has an opinion about this song. Thanks for the great reaction!

I grew up listening to Michel Polnareff being from Belgium. The reason of this song is when his manager stole his money he moved to the U.S. This song is nostalgia to his country that he loves. I particularly love this song, not only as it is stunning, but because I'm as well an expat, from Belgium, and miss it so much, except for the weather (I live in Florida). We both love where we are from and are suffering silently, that's what that song is about.

lot of his song are like this... and even those composed early when he was (very) young ! He wrote this song for his homesickness when in "exile" in the US (for tax issues however...)... just as if it was a love song to a far away beloved woman. He left France, but missed it. he was in New-york in those time, so he sing that he is at 6 hours from France... when he went in California later, he changed the lyrics, to 9 h...

Hi Dereck, I am so glad that you had finally the time to listen Michel Polnareff´s songs!! I think he still lives in America. My favorite song of him is UNE SIMPLE MELODIE, beautiful. Thanks for the nice job on your channel from France and Indiana. Marjorie & Joe

I love, love and love any kind of great music, wether it is contemporary or not, rock, jazz or pop ! "LETTRE À FRANCE" is just "french blues". It is a heartbreak letter to his country, but might also be addressed to a girl... Simply true and romantic! La France, grammatically of feminin gender, is also a first name in the french language...

He was always an outsider and ahead of his time, that's why he is who he is. I'm so delighted to see how you're enjoying his songs. It was the same for me since day one I discovered him as a young man in the mid 70's.

Hello Dereck, surely one of the most beautiful French songs but which requires understanding the lyrics and knowing the story of Michel Polnareff at the time it was written to appreciate it to its fullest ;-) // Bonjour Dereck, surement une des plus belles chansons françaises mais qui nécessite de comprendre les paroles et de connaitre l'histoire de Michel Polnareff au moment ou elle a été écrite pour l'apprécier a son maximum ;-)
