Michel Polnareff left France for the United States in 1973 because a friend of him had squandered his fortune and created huge debts while Michel was on tour. Leaving France was the only way to avoid prison. In this song, written during his exile, he expresses his loneliness and homesickness. It's, in a way, a love letter to France and its fans. The original studio version is absolutely stunning.

Ce n'est pas la meilleure version de "lettre à France" mais ce chanteur, auteur, compositeur est l'un de meilleurs français encore vivant.

Ahhhhhhhhhhh Polnareff l Amiral !!!An artist close to his audience. I had the chance to correspond with him many times and our exchanges were full of humor. One day, when he was not in good spirits, he called me on the phone. A few years before, he was the one who asked me how I was when I was not well. Since my childhood I dreamed of seeing him and it happened in 2007! Author composer with an incomparable voice. I hope to see other videos of him here. A big thank you!!!

In 1972, Michel Polnareff was at the height of his fame and was living a luxurious life in a private mansion in Neuilly. Living the life of a star, he hired a trusted man to manage his finances. But that year, he suffered his first setback caused by the poster for his concert at the Olympia where he showed his buttocks: accused of indecent assault, he had to face a trial and pay a fine of 6 million old francs. He is a provocative singer who doesn't care about genres and political correctness. Some even thought he was a woman because he sang very high-pitched. He created a song where he proclaims "Je suis un homme". Nevertheless, his songs are magnificent like "Goodbye Marylou", "Love me please love me", "Holidays", "On ira tous au paradis"."La poupée qui fait non", Tous les bateaux tous les oiseaux, Le bal des laze, Qui a tué grand maman, Dans la maison vide.......

Michel Polnareff is one of the most consequential modern French artists. He, unfortunately, was a tax evader who went to live in the USA (hence this song about his homesickness). This video is about his comeback home ...

I think there is quite a difference between loving one’s country, the way it’s expressed in this song (which is about exile), and the way « patriots » love their idea of their country, which happens, too often, to be petty and excluding.

Michel is a boy given name (apparently after the Archangel Michel). Michelle is the feminine counterpart (after all, angels gender is still debated 😊) Also, in some regional accents, the final ''e'' is almost silent. Sometimes they must repeat with a better articulation.

Once upon a time You and me Never forget that You and me Since I've been far away from you I'm like far away from me And I think of you quietly You're six hours away from me I'm years away from you That's what it's like to be there The difference It's this silence sometimes deep inside me You still live by the water Sometimes in the newspapers I see you in photos and me far from you I live in a music box Electric and fantastic I live in Chimerical The difference It's this silence sometimes deep inside me You're not always the most beautiful And I remain unfaithful to you But who can tell the future of our memories Yes, I miss you sometimes Even if I don't say it Love is made of that Once upon a time You and me Never forget that You and me Since I've been far away of you I'm like far from me And I think of you over there Yes I miss you sometimes Even if I don't say it I think of you quietly

He was living in the US when he wrote this song. He was homesick, the song is a love letter to his homeland, France. He speaks to his country like if he was speaking to a beloved, beautiful woman. Unfortunately, this version is not the best: Michel used to be a counter-tenor, the male equivalent of a soprano. However, he's not able to reach this vocal range anymore. I don't know why, it might be because of medical issues.

As for the "gender" questions, it is a nauseating ideology which is very difficult to accept in France and which annoys a lot of people. In general, the majority of the population considers these people to be crazy, crazy but not dangerous, but crazy nonetheless.
