My grandmother lived until she was 92 and played piano every day until she died. She would play this song all the time - this brings back a million memories for me. This version is the best I've ever heard it played.

Refreshing to hear someone play this like an actual piece of music and not a series of keys that must be pressed as quickly as possible.

My mother used to pour her soul into this song with all of the grace Debussy wrote into it.

I performed this in college in 1969, I attempted to imitate this version as I liked it the best of all the ones I listened. I must have done fairly well, the four judges gave me a 94 out of 100 for the interpretation. I’m quite certain they knew where the inspiration came from.

When I hear the song I think of being on a horse-drawn carriage in the early 1900s, probably in New York or Chicago. Make the "clopping" sounds with your tongue to mimic the sound of galloping or clap two coconut shells together. Debussy was brilliant. This pianist captures and expresses the feeling that Debussy experienced.

This piece was meant to be satirical and is actually mocking Wagner
@user-ov9vr1wc2j4 жыл бұрын
Really? How is it mocking Wagner?
@mold9714 жыл бұрын
@@user-ov9vr1wc2j It's alluding to Tristan und Isolde throughout, specifically the Tristan chord in the opening

It reminds me of young male black teenagers and how they amble along with baggy pants, languid and swaying, different parts of their body following a unique choreography, how breaking out into sudden pace with dancing, then slowing down and stopping , almost , then back into movement and a repeat of the first. The title gives it away. I’m surprised it’s not taken down.
@ALEX1N04 жыл бұрын
I would say that it actually mock Scott Joplin and ragtime in general
@Crabbyskunk3 жыл бұрын
@@ALEX1N0 He's not mocking ragtime, it IS ragtime. Debussy probably didn't mean any offense toward Wagner as he admired and was heavily influenced by Wagner, but he openly mocks Wagner by using the Tristan chord as a joke here.

Magnificent rendition but does anyone know why his left hand plays with too much pressure to keys at 0:29? I’m a beginner on piano learning and I wonder why he plays like that? Overall, Michelangeli is a prominent performer of one and only Debussy and I really like his playing. Thanks for your answers in advance!

Notice that tristan und isolde (prelude) reference in the middle section (1:25), Debussy is laughing at that wagnerian seriousness
