As I know a lot of people will be asking about wear, here's my take: Wear is interesting. No one has done a proper test on these tyres, and sadly for me it's too expensive and time consuming to do properly. as you need to drive both sets of tyres for around 10,000km in convoy so you cover EXACTLY the same roads and conditions. What I can say is this. Michelin is regarded as having a wear advantage in this (and all) segments, however recent testing shows that Goodyear and Continental have caught up, and in some tests, overtaken Michelin. See this link as an example: www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Article/2020-Auto-Bild-Summer-Tyre-Test.htm It will be interesting to see how people find the Goodyear once reviews start appearing on the website. The Michelin Pilot Sport 4S definitely wears very well for this segment.
@stewartmacdonald6014 жыл бұрын
I was going to ask exactly this. As if these tyres really are so closely matched, then wear rate would maybe come into play a bit more. I have a set of Eagle G1 A5's on my daily car just now (2015 Focus 1.5 TDI), and have put around 18k on them so far. And there is still loads of life left. Quite impressive. So much so, that having recently bought bigger wheels for it, I put the same tyres on again, but have yet to swap the wheels over. When I do, the old wheels will hopefully go on my 2007 Clio 197 to "finish off" the tyres. Also because the Clio currently has some Toyo rubbish on it just now.

Having switched from the factory MSS to MPS4S on one of our M2’s, I think we may switch to the Eagle SS on our other M2 and see how they compare back to back. Our two cars do the same miles under the same conditions so we should be well placed to have a go 👌

In one month I'll have had mine a year. Three previous sets were Michelins. Can't say I can notice they wear any faster...
@gap8164 жыл бұрын
More than Wear I'd be interested to know the consistency of the tyres through time, and not just of one set but multiple examples of them in different DOT's. Which will be best in let's say 3 years time with some heat cycles in them. I know new are good but I know it's practically impossible to rightly measure that. Enjoyed the Review though!
@florianfixman96044 жыл бұрын
Wear level is important but finally what counts is the level of performance remaining. You can have a 75% weared tire which is better than a 50% weared tire (see comparison between weared Michelin and new budget tires!). So this require to do also measurement test along the wear test...

So far done 2500km on them, and like this review says, they are very close. I’ve had ZERO grip issues in the GYs so far. I did buy the F1 SS, on the basis of your previous review; they are superb. On the road they are as stiff as you'd want but good wet and dry. I've also used them on track for 500 miles. In the dry, they are probably about as fast as Nankang NS2R semi slicks. In the wet they are awesome and work even in very cold temperatures. These are ideal tyres for those that want a UHP tyre that works on the road and in all likely conditions on the track. Price was £400 fitted in 235/40/18, cheap I'd say

The supersports are the predecessors to the ps4s. Having driven both, especially the wet performance of the ps4s is way better. I'd wish to get any of them, but 18" seems only size they start come off, with lesser sizes covered only by more street oriented (PS4/Asymmetric5) or much more track oriented models (Cup2). Nothing for R17 from this "sweet spot" of inbetween, except older models like PSS/AD08R. No clue, how manufacturers guide themselves on choosing sizing lineup, no clue why latest tires of this class in 17 are sold in USDM only.

Now front tires are worn on the edges (alignment is OK), centre has around 3-4mm of meat, rear are worn in the centre down to 2-3mm because I was driving whit a bit to high tire pressure - on purpose. They have around 10.000 KM of tread left, so I am planing to use all of it and buy new set of Michelin's. They are highly recommend for daily whit a lot of highway use. I drive Mercedes C 200 CDI.

If you take another one of the biggest factors(in my opinion) which is the price, it's a no brainer for me, that the obvious winner here is Goodyear. I mean, of course paying the top-end premium price should get you an additional level of refinement, but that has always been the case for almost everything in the world for any kind of product. For example, a Porsche 911 driven with Michelin PS4S N1 vs. Michelin PS4S without the 'N' rating. We seem to get customers every so often that ask if there is really a difference. For us, the difference is substantial with respect to how they fit on the rim, the types of numbers they yield on our balancing equipment, what they feel like when driving, and how well we're able to align the car. I'm also curious about your background that led you into tire testing? Keep up the good work and stay healthy. Thanks again.

Nice to have someone trying mix quantitative and qualitative tyre testing!! They’ll be some Goodyear SuperSports to replaced the Michelin SuperSports on my M140i 😍😍

It´s good to know science, lap times, brake distances etc. but as you said today top tier tyres are so close that making review just about tyre characteristics and behaviour is the best thing you can do. Tyres are so close but every car is different and mostly have different tyre size. So if you are more GT driver in M5 you should probably use different tyre than for your trackday M2 and is good to know which has less noise or more feedback even if difference is small. Thank for great review!

I f*****g love this channel. Every time you upload a video or an article on the website I go crazy because I'm also a tyre fanatic. They are the most important part in the handling of a car Love it By the way I never opted for uhp tires (except I tried some falken fk510 last year) because I run semislick every time except in the winter 😂😂

My experience of the P4S on my E46 M3 is that they are superb. They’re so good in the dry it’s hard for me to imagine the amount of extra grip I’d get from something like a Cup 2 tyre. Likewise in the wet, to echo what you’re saying, sometimes it still feels like it’s dry. I tip the car into corners at speeds approaching dry weather stuff and still get on the power early. She never breaks traction and just grips and goes. Now I know some of that will be the chassis being remarkably well balanced and a fairly low torque figure so at lower revs it’s harder to overwhelm the tyres anyway. The Goodyear’s sound great, but they don’t sound night and day different enough to make me switch. 👍🏼

@@tyrereviews Something you didn't really touch on in the video that I think would sway a lot of buyers in one direction or the other is the price of the tyres. The rears on that M2 would cost about £195 each if you opt for the Goodyears, or £215 if you opt for the Michelins. To replace all 4 wheels you're likely looking at around a saving of £60-80 with the Goodyears depending on where you get them. If you're getting similar performance out of both and a similarly enjoyable experience, I think the price difference will sway a lot of people.

Ever tried the PS4 before the 4s? So much difference? I know that there is a video on this channel with the comparison but I also wanted to hear the opinion from a rwd car owner
@Detail_Den_UK4 жыл бұрын
Lorenzo Clara personally I haven’t tried the regular PS4. Having seen a review on this channel about them I wouldn’t use them either. Not because they’re a bad tyre, for your average driver I’m certain they’re very good, however I really like the feel of the 4S. As I mention above they offer so much grip and just give me confidence whenever I’m driving or pushing the car.

I switched from PS4 to PS4s on my E46 M3 and can hand on heart declare that they are like chalk and cheese. I found the wear on the PS4s was actually lower than its' previous incarnation and the performance difference was superior in every way. The way I look at it is there is just no comparison, they are both on totally different levels. The illusion of the name (just the additional "S") gives the impression that the 4S is an evolution of the standard 4 but my understanding is the 4S is actually a street oriented version of the Cup Sport 2. With the prices of the PS4s being very good now, I would definitely look at giving them a go if you haven't already.

I have just had these put on my Nissan 370z gt edition yesterday 245 40 19 front 275 35 19 rear and I can only say that the review given saying they seem to make you want to drive more is 100% spot on. I am amazed by these tyres it's almost like you know exactly what's going on all the time,hard to explain but you take of quick from a junction and the rear gived a nice little flick out but was like it was in slow motion and you have time to access exactly what's going on without even having to think. As it was late when the fitter had finished at home I left it till this morning to go test them,I went out at 11am to go get some shopping and I walked through my front door just before 4pm and forgot to even go the shop lol. Obviously this is my own personal opinion on my car and with this being my 187th car I do have a little experience with the feel of different cars, tyres etc. I have to go back to what was said about the tyres make you feel like you want to keep driving and I discovered something today that I had forgotten.! When you have your music on feeling totally relaxed driving hard and you feel like the car is part of you and you have thay tunnel vision waiting for that next piece of road you can smash that red line. Already I know what some may think that I am being a bit dramatic but for those reading who understand a naturally aspirated 370 bhp through rear wheel drive on a nice dry day will get it. I really am genuinely amazed. Oh and by the way I'm 50 this year and today I felt like I did when I got my 1st car mu little xr2 fiesta when I was 18.🤪👍👍👍

Did only order 2, so kinda waiting for next summer when having the full 4 to the floor setup! 😄 Bought Dunlop's Wintersport 5 before as winter tires & loved these esp for the comfort. Its interesting because iv read Goodyear owns Dunlop. Makes u wonder if the same composition in rubber is used to create comfort etc..? 👍

After a recent MOT on my Alpina Roadster, I was advised that my tyres could do with replacement (yipee - the Falkens are going) My previous experience with the PS4s was WOW, they just never failed to impress. The inbuilt rim protection was also a real benefit when running 30 ratio tyres. I shall hold off purchasing until this pesky virus allows us out again. I don't want flat spots on my new tyres 🤣 Great review and a 👍🏻s up

Thanks for your review! After being a big Michelin fan since the mid-00s for performance tires, I've lost a lot of enthusiasm with the most recent generation of Pilot Sport, basically because the feel has gotten more comfort-oriented. That direct engagement and impossible-to-overheat feeling from the Pilot Exalto PE2 and Pilot Super Sport now seems to be more readily found in a Continental Extreme Contact Sport or Bridgestone Potenza RE-003. Given the price premium for a Michelin, they will not be my next UHP tire buy.

Just put the PS4S's on my '18 Golf R and right away was not happy about the slower steering feel and how the car seemed to move around on the tires more than compared to the stock Conti 5P's. I thought they felt like too much of a luxury tire, and I missed that sporty sharp steering feel. The car at first seemed to feel less planted at higher speeds. Well, after a few hundred miles of re-calibrating my brain and getting used to the slightly slower reaction and softer feel of these tires, I've come to appreciate how great they are for the majority of the driving I do, which includes lots of broken-up New England back roads. They smooth out rough pavement while proving amazing grip at all speeds. Had them in the wet for the first time today where they felt superb. Makes my car feel "more expensive" somehow. Just plan on giving a bit more steering input, initiated a bit sooner. For the real world of fast road driving, they're mighty impressive.

Hey, it depends. If we're using a new set of tyres for dry handling I'll scrub them in for a lap then go. In the wet we usually do some sort of pre-conditioning, but only a few orbits each way on a dry circle. Same for winter tyres heading up for snow testing, they get broken in somewhere else in the dry.

While Michelin is by far the most consistently good tire maker, Good Year proves every now and then that they can build a good tire when they try to.

Qusetion: XL (extra load) tyres. Are they better than the non-XL versions? XL means that the side walls are stronger, which means that they are harder so you get better fuel economy and better handeling, and tyres are more durable (hitting the curb, or similar). But they are less confortable. Are there more possitives and negatives to them? I always tend to choose the XL versions.

Thank you for a prior clarification about a Continental tire. Here is my question. Using 225-40-18, which would be the better tire in the following situation between the pilot sport 4S and the extreme contact sport >>I am a spirited driver!!>>triple digit mph dry conditions high speed cornering...let's say a long downhill right in the outside lane with good but not perfect pavement wanting to push the car as much as possible...which tire will talk to me more so I know where I stand...not wanting to get surprised by the rear end letting loose when I think it is still having traction...will the michelins talk to me with their own language and is that language hard to learn?...will the michelins do a little more speed, but the continentals will talk to me more? How is the grip level beween the two? Which would you prefer to use during dry pavement hard braking? MANY THANKS in advance!!

Bike on a commuter Michelin pilot roads. But a pure dry set up for bike I got Pirelli but there expensive. Even the michelin energy saver +, comlared to continentals i had at the time, better mpg, better grip. Bettee wear. Michelin IMO
