Nice review! I have a bmw 120 xdrive (F20) and I think that it can only go on run flat. Do you think the ranking you made in the article will be similar with those type of tyres? The car came with Bridgestone potenza (former generation): they are not bad (of corse it’s not a car for the racetrack and on the road the performance is more than enough), but they feel a bit stiff (the size doesn’t help either … /40 at the front and /35 on the rear).

Firstly: I am an automotive technician. I have an AMG C450 and have run my stock Pirelli run-flats for a while now, and they have literally been worn to the wire. I just bought a set of Pilot Sport 4s and absolutely LOVE them. I honestly didn't actually realize how much quality tires made a difference (as I don't drive customer cars nearly as aggressive as my own), but have concluded that the extra money is entirely worth it, for the more spirited driver. 100% recommend 4s for anyone looking to have track tires on the street, as they are very capable in dry & wet performance! My car really does feel entirely different on there, to my surprise. 🙌

Is this joke? How is that possible
@synapticbit
@synapticbit 3 жыл бұрын
The right rear picked up rubber from the track, there wasn’t enough wear to negate what was essentially melted rubber left on the pavement. It is a joke btw… Firstly, The rubber that it did pick up would not come close to the amount of wear that was happening. Secondly, if it did, it’s isn’t good solid rubber that would actually provide appreciable grip. Thirdly, because of how it came to the tire, it would most likely scrub off extremely quickly anyways.

The Potenza is a cheat tyre. I ran a couple of sets on a new new civic type R. I deduced that they were dual compound. They gave astounding grip for the first 1,500 miles then lost about 75% of the traction and thereafter would last forever on the harder inner compound. Your tests show rapid initial wear which corroborates this. If you ran all three full term you would find it would have a similar or better overall range. Once you were through the grippy soft layer on the Potenza you could see a line at each edge of the tyre which was the difference in compound

I'm beginning to believe this too. Michelin do it with the Cup 2R but at least they're honest about them turning into Cup 2's after a few fast laps. On the other hand my Potenza Sports turned to scrap after one track day which was most certainly not advertised.

I've been unable to stop watching; these are some of the best tire/tyre evaluations I've seen anywhere. Watching this test, I noted that tire pressures were held equal at 2.5 bar, even though the tires were riding up the sidewalls in the corners. In my experience, tire design differences can require very different air pressure to achieve optimum performance. I suggest marking sidewalls during warm up, and adjusting tire pressure until they no longer roll past the edge of the tread at the limit. This will also reveal the need for a front-rear pressure difference that's roughly equal to the car's front-rear weight balance. SOP at track days I've attended.

Since Bridgestone Potenza Sport's main advantage is that it is the only UUHP offered in 17inch, it would be extremelly useful to have the same test comparing 17 inch rivals in the likes of Michelin PS4, Conti PC6, Goodyear AS5, Pirelli PZ4. I believe this is the main interest of the everyday 17inch wheel driver with track use in mind. 18+inch wheelers have options, we knew that already.

Comparing tyre weights in 225/45 R17: Falken RT660 10.8kg (track day tyre), Potenza S007A 10.4kg, Potenza Sport 9.9kg [so it's already weight-reduced for low rolling resistance compared to the predecessor model :(], ExtremeContact Force 9.9kg (track day tyre), Pilot Sport 4 9.5kg, F1 Asymmetric 3 9.1kg, PremiumContact 6 8.9kg. While Jonathon has said the 18" CPC6 has good sidewalls, it doesn't seem like the 17" model does, considering how lightweight the structure is. The trend to no longer give 'road' tyres the same rigid structure as track day tyres is very disappointing IMO, lots of people want the precise handling but don't need the grip or poor aquaplaning resistance of a track day tyre. -- Why not have one product line for Passat and C300 drivers who want traction with high comfort, but then a true sports road tyre line for Clio RS and WRX STi drivers who do want the rigidity in the tyre, even if (like the 2005 WRX STi or 2005 Clio Gordini) it only came with 17" or 16" tyres when it was new?

Thanks for the video! I had the same issue as shown here with the Bridgestone Potenza Sport. On my MX-5 ND (light car, RWD) just 30 minutes on track were enough to show extreme wear on the shoulders. I'm glad that you could replicate this behavior, as I was worried about me doing something wrong. I was previously using the S001 and lasted for 17000 km with several track days. Of course with lower grip levels, but with perfect wear. Not going to repeat with Potenza Sports, as some commented here semi-slicks is the way to go.

Trackday enthusiasts probably will not only do at least some brake improvements like fluid & pads, but also will change alignment some, eg. extra camber, which should reduce outer front tire wear and understeer, making it less of an issue. For me clear and only winner are Bridgestones, due them being only ones offered in 17" sizing. Yes, more modern cars often have larger wheels, but track junkies more commonly drive on older beaters they can afford to risk more and with cheaper track expenses, hence even more kudos to Bridgestone for that. List tested imho missed Contis, also having good offering in class tested, but no biggie, they were in your other tests. Whatever, still big thanks for yet another good & competent test for our enjoyment and more educated tire purchase decisions. Got my like even before watching whole video, deservedly :)

@church493

@Erik B It all depends on where and how most of the wear happens. You just "choose your poison"(optimal alignment for use) according that. If most of the wear happens on track (tire set might be "worth" around 5 track days), and it happens in one season/summer, daily driven mileage/wear in that time will be negligible and extra inner camber wear - ignorable,

I've been running F1 supersport for 2 years and the conclusion I have is, it's not really competing against ps4s. It's very durable after heat cycles, and handles track days extremely well. But it's very stiff, noisy, and wet performance is noticeably worse than PS4S. I think it slots perfectly between PS4S and Cup2.

I agree, my road-biased experience indicates that the regular GY Eagle F1 series fits between PS4 and PS4S, and for daily road use I wouldn’t want Supersports any more than I’d want to run Cup2s. So much so, that after about 6 months I traded the 4 S' for some Pilot Super Sports. You are the only reviewer I have come across that has mentioned that the older Michelin Pilot Super Sports "have more road feel" as compared to the newer 4 S'. I would also add, for me, they have much better traction in the dry too. I've been using the F1 SuperSport on my FN2 Civic for about two years now and they're a mixed bag. On a warm dry summer days they're jaw-droppingly good and are very impressive in the wet. Bags of feel and very predictable. On cooler days (10-15c) they have to be warmed up to perform and while they do they're pretty average. On damp days they're a handful and if the roads are remotely greasy they're awful. Overall they're an awesome summer tyre, but they're not a 3-season tyre! I'll be trying the AS5's next as I loved the AS2/AS3's, but I'll have to accept they won't perform like the F1 SuperSport's in summer. Other things to note are an increase in road noise, wear rate and torque-steer over the AS3's I had on last. I'm estimating they'll have done about 8k miles by the time they're down to the limit.

Easily the best road tyres I've had on the car but after two track days at Snetterton and Silverstone my front left matched your wear pattern exactly ( my right actually wasn't too bad ) . At Snetterton the rubber on the two bands closest to the outside just melted off. At Silverstone I dropped the pressure a bit to see if it would help and it looked like it rolled over on the sidewall and that disintegrated. Bridgestone Potenza Sport is my favourite for street driving. Used 4S and Sport in my FK8 stage 3 and tuned 991.2 Turbo S. In both cars Potenza Sport has better handling, can stop later and shorter, drive faster in each curve with 3-5 km/h and feel more stable in every situation. Potenza Sport is not designed for the track. But if you get Potenza Sport Race, Cup 2 is a way slower tyre.

Benson does it again! Excellent video with excellent, usable data. Really disappointed with the Potenza Sport's track wear! Would love to see a video on different tires available in different markets and WHY!!! It seems silly that in Europe you've got the Eagle Super Sports and the USA has the Eagle Super Car 3 - would love to hear from manufacturers why certain tires are only available in certain markets and if you could compare them, that would be awesome.

The older Potenza S007A seemed to be ok for multiple track days, I really don't understand what has gone wrong with the Potenza Sport. Bridgestone in Australia claim the Sport is an improvement over the S007A, but I'm not sure -- the S007A already performed at a high level, close to Eagle F1 Super Sport & Pilot Sport 4S (and better in some metrics) in tyre testing here in Australia.

Good video again Based on a Tyre Review test, I've been using Eagle F1 Supersport on my RX8, for a few years. They are superb on track and work well in wet and cold conditions where semi-slicks do not. They grip well on the road, but are firmer than normal tyres; buy Eagle F1 Assy 5, if you do do use your car on track. My only complaint is that the smallest size they come in is 18".

This was a great video thanks. I recently fitted a set of Potenza sports to my Impreza and so far found the grip on the road is immense. This video makes me think twice about taking them on track though, but the wear could be different with a 4WD car. Maybe better to leave it towards the end of the tyres life. Also it's disappointing that Michelin produce the 4S in only one size for the 18 inch market, this was the main reason for choosing the Potenza. There seems to be limited choice with the F1 Supersport as well.

I really like the fact that you show the deterioration after just 5 laps. These tyres are not intended for people with much track experience, although it doesn't mean they are bad tyres. These are for people who want to try their car on track for the first time, or perhaps may never actually drive their car on track even if they believe they could. The biggest problem is the tyre is likely to be toast after 1 or 2 track days, so its going to be expensive when you need to replace them.

Very interesting and consistent test. I drive with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres on my Golf R as a daily. Before driving a few fast laps on the track, the tyres don't have the heat, grip and predictability on the road. Having said that, they do still grip and handle well on the road when they're not a track temperature (pressure consistent), but clearly do not have the better, more optimum performance as they do at track temperature. Furthermore, the general wear of the MPSC2 is very even with no feathering on or off track, and near their end of life they show little to no regression to a sudden loss of grip and performance. Just wanted to throw this out here!

Great video! I have the impression that the Michelin flexed it's side wall the least. The comparison is exemplary. Although, it seems that tyres requiring 2.5 bar and still flexing that much are just not the right size. Having in mind that serious setups use 1.3-1.6 bar and wear the same or less. Also, you drive alone, imagine having to seal with 10 or 20 other cars and the associated maneuvers, those won't last 30 minutes. Not critisizing, just a side note for weight of vehicle/tyre size. It would be interesting to see 285 tyres on something like a STi

I have to say, I often don’t expect great things when I see a comparison like this. The number of potential variables is just so huge and the largest being the drivers themselves. So I’ll start by giving kudos to you for seeming to be at the very least a very capable driver who is (more importantly) quite consistent! That is huge when it comes to a shootout like this. While the pilot was the performance leader, it seems like the Michelin generally had the least wear. The Bridgestone had the most wear, but as you mentioned seemed to have come regained its performance as the laps continued. Which would you pick for being the best choice for a daily tire for someone who might participate in a track day more rarely vs more frequently? Is it reasonable at all to think that with either a longer race or multiple races (maybe back to back weekends) that the Bridgestone might offer more consistent performance as wear continues? Or, does the shear amount of wear negate it from being considered a good choice?

Interesting, good to know that there are good alternatives to the "4S". Had the Pilot SuperSport on my CS and also, drove them on a Competition on the track. Really heat sensitive - if you start leaning into them, they will heat up and start understeering. You need to drive with less entry speed AND watch out when accelerating, they broke traction even when going slow. One of the reasons I exchanged them immediately with the Cup 2s on my CS. Also, maybe you could get the ContactSport 6, or even 7, next time. They seem to do well, especially when mounted on a FWD car (CS6 is the OEM tire for the Civic Type R). And, it was hard to watch...can't stand the dreaded sound of understeer. It brings back memories when I "had to do" with a FWD hot hatch. What helped/helps, is sawing a little at the wheel, to break the initial understeer and provoke a bit of oversteer/the back to step out. Not my driving style though, I never got comfortable doing that, but have seen professional (race/test)drivers employing it with success.

How would you think the Good Year Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5s would have fared in this test? They proved to have a more sporty feeling than the 4s in another test you've made (this was your main complaint on the 4s), while being very close in performance. I own them and wear seems to be pretty good as well, also if driven to the limit (even wear across the width of the tire)... Definitely not a screamy tire. Seems like for a prolonged trackday a UHP tire like the 4s might be even better than a track focused tire (will last longer and wear better, at the expense of some speed). Swapped out to PS4's on the same car, same driving conditions, got twice the KM's. Sure the RE003's were cheaper, but they weren't anywhere near half the price of the PS4's! Thanks Jon for the great review of these high performance street tires, some thing I've been looking forward to. The wear behavior of the Bridgestone seems consistent with what I experienced on a set of Potenza S007s, the OEM tire on my 370Z, after a couple of 5 hour very fast drives down the coastal road(CA-1) in California from Oregon to the SF bay area. The Bridgestone was a better handling tire than the PS4S I currently have but the wear was significantly greater, but then the Potenza was a 240 tire vs the Michelin's 300. My guess is that Bridgestone is using softer tire compounds to achieve high levels of grip, along with stiffer sidewalls.

Yet the S007A (not the OEM-version S007) has a harder compound than the Pilot Sport 4 (not S). It was a 100 durometer reading for S007A versus 75 for PS4. Unclear if Potenza Sport and PS4S have the same relationship. Very odd.

Interesting test. I so want the Potenza Sport, F1 SS and/or P Zero PZ4 to knock the PS4S off its perch, I get very bored of how it is always the internet's standard recommendation on performance car forums, where people generally describe everything else as useless. For road use at least, the others have caught up. I have a pair of Potenza Sports on the rear of my daily driver (>500bhp but not used on track) and they are the best I have used in >6 years of driving that model of car. For that, the Michelins are >25% more expensive , which is a factor. As is availability - for my second car, which may see track use, the PS4S is not available, in fact the only UHP tyre available in that size that is not a generation or more old, is the Potenza Sport. Whether the old PS2 is better than the new Bridgestone on track is something I may have to find out!

I'd love to see a comparison between these and my current favourite 200 treadwear tyre, Yokohama A052. What is the difference in difference in communication and steering feel. I'm looking for a tyre that prioritises driving enjoyment. Thanks for your videos!

At a guess the 52 will have been steering but the Goodyear will be way better in the wet

I blame you for the increase of price in the super sports 😂 when I first started buying them a couple of years back they was marginally cheaper then the Michelin’s, now they’re creeping above. Great vid !

Last year I put Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres on my RWD E63 6 Series coupé. Everything was impaired: handling, steering feel, cornering. I replaced two tyres on the rear axle (275/35 R19) with Bridgestone Potenza Sport. Everything is awesome now 😊😊: road feedback is there, steering is sharp, cornering precise. After I sell the two PS4 tyres I'm going to buy Potenza Sport on the front axle too. As I use it as a second car and put low mileage on it, plus I don't track it, wear is not such a big deal for me.

Sounds like the Mich Pilot Sport 4S would have been a better tyre for you (from Michelin). But sounds like you've got a good tyre for you anyway now :). I personally won't touch the Bridgestone, seeing as how they got ruined by just 1 track session! (I do a few each year).

@@Assimilator1 The PS 4S tyres may have been good as well but after the bad experience with the PS 4's I was reluctant to buy Michelin for this car (mind you I have the same tyres on my Jaguar XF and like them, but the XF is not as sporty as the 6 Series), and fortunately the Bridgestone Potenza Sport tyres didn't disappoint.

I went from S007A to PS4S ( moderate power AWD car ) and the sidewall and straight line vague feel has been a big let down. The PS4S is better in almost every other facet, especially in the wet, but I have two cars, one on PS4 and my toy on PS4S and the soft sidewalls are an annoyance to me. The Bridgestone S007A's varied a lot on terms of grip as they wore, didn't last long and were far noisier and harsher, yet that summer driving, straight line feel and lack of flex around corners was the best I've ever felt. Deadly in the wet, and aquaplane city at speed, but in the dry I could feel the road surface, and my better car was an absolute go-cart. I won't be going PS4S again, despite their deserved all round excellence, and need to find a similar hard sidewall tyre that will not squirm around ( and yes I've played endlessly with tyre pressures and suspension angles / setup ). I'm not tracking, just a street driver who appreciates a good set of summer tyres!

@@gregroles69 Spot on! Bridgestone Potenzas have never been a let-down, especially in the dry. As long as I have my BMW I'll always choose Bridgestone Potenza. I definitely prefer a stiff sidewall to a soft one.

Jon from Forensic Detailing put a set of Bridgestone Potenza Sports on his M240i, loved them on the road, but he took it to Goodwood and the Potenzas fell to bits, much like you've seen here, if not even more so. Shame really as they seem a decent tyre besides falling to bits.

Even though the Potenza Sport is inferior to the PS4S, it is still the only UUHP tire available in 17". Thank you Bridgestone for making a UUHP tire that fits my S2000 OEM wheels 👏👏 Oh and Michelin, get your sh*t together and finally offer the PS4S 17" in Europe... 😡

@@Nalafraser Yeah I had a set of RE003's back when they were first released on a 400rwhp 1900kg Aussie Ford Falcon. They only lasted 17,000km which for a road use only tyre was to me totally unacceptable. Changed to PS4's on same car - twice the mileage between sets - not twice the price, and they perform a lot better especially in the wet.

I knew Goodyear make great tyres, reading into most of your reviews Goodyear always seem to do particularly well on test. Michelin usually takes the crown but fair play they've worked very hard at that. I used to be an MOT tester and the amount of inner sidewall cracks from the Bridgestone (sometimes to the cord) were shocking. Puts me right off but they could have improved since then. I've got my eyes on a set of Goodyear's at some point!

I have the same car which is featured in the video and I use Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperSports for summer, fantastic tires and great grip. I had Michelins on my previous VW and mastered my drifting skills 😃as they had almost no grip in hot summer days. Bridgestones are great for low quality and hard asphalt but as shown in the video, wear faster than others.
