Thank you for the video. Got 54K out of the rear 245/40R18 AS3's on my 2014 MB C250 coupe and was really happy with them . Had AS4's installed today which were about $28 more per tire than I could have gotten AS3+ . I figured $28 premium over 50K miles worth a try . Looking at them on the car cant see any real visual difference from the side . Seem to ride and handle well and are quiet as were AS3+. I run 41psi which seems to balance center tread wear well with outer tread wear . I reduced camber a bit with the SPC adjustable camber kit way back when the AS3's were installed . Wore out Conti Contact DWS in 10K miles on inner edge before reducing camber to negative 1 degree for the AS3's. Took out a tiny amount of rear toe , too since toe changes with camber setting . Got 46K out of AS3's on front and replaced with AS3+ since before AS4 was available . I'll stick with Michelin Pilot Sports on the MB .

What a fantastic review, thank you! I lived in San Diego for decades, so am aware of the driving environment in California. I’m now in Maine, of course a drastically different environment. But I too am replacing AS3’s and this was so helpful to me that you compared the two tires. Much of what you tested will translate over the two environments. I do run Blizzaks in winter, although I sometimes get caught in snow with my all seasons. It’s an old WRX, so not a problem there. Gosh, I was so pleased with my AS3’s and I could easily (and legally pass inspection) for a couple more seasons but like with so many tires, they tend to get hard and lose a certain feel at around half life. They are wearing great, still balance well, etc., but I want max pleasure so I’m ordering a new set of the AS4’s as a birthday gift to myself and a 15th birthday present to the old Subie! Thanks again for the timely review and nice BMW! Much too nice for my neck of the woods!

Thank you for all the feedback. I just realized that my wife's Ford Escape AWD vehicle needs to have the same tread depth because of the AWD feature on this SUV. Consequently, since she had tire damage to one of her tires I'm comparing the difference in circumference between the AS3+ and the AS4 before I replace the two rear tires. My tolerance seems to be between 2/32nd and 4/32nd's in tread depth on the set of "like" tires... so, a lot of good food for thought. Thanks again!

I’m glad I came across your video with this comparison. Until I did, I wasn’t aware on the evolution to PS4 All-season. I own a ‘17 Camaro SS 1LE. Back when I bought it in 2017, I knew that I would need a winter wheel/tire set to get me through Atlanta’s winters. So, I researched tires first choosing the A/S 3+ which I could only get in 19” for my car. This pushed me to buy a second set of wheels (19”) for them. This wasn’t what I initially intended to do but it certainly makes swapping more convenient. Now, the A/S 3+ is available in a larger 19” size (325/30ZR19) which I think will look better on the 11” wide rears I chose to go with (fronts are 10”). Though I went with the widest available at the time (285/35ZR19), they are stretched on the 11’s, a look I’ve never been fond of. Of course, the 325/30’s should fix this appearance. So, yesterday I discovered the A/S 3+ comes in my original OE wheel sizes 😕. Ugh! I wish they had 4 years ago but I was forced into a more convenient option. Now, I see Michelin doesn’t make (yet anyway) this PS4 in the 19” sizes I would need. Here we go again 😕 I will just have to keep checking back with Michelin about every 6 months or so in hopes the size offerings are expanded.
@lorentzarmstrong30083 жыл бұрын
Update! I checked back on the Michelin website and happy and relieved to report size offerings have expanded and are now available in both sizes I currently run for my all-season 19” wheel set: 285/35R19 for front 10” wide rim and 325/30R19 for rear 11” rim. Moreover, for us Camaro SS 1LE and ZL1 owners, these Michelin Pilot Sport All-season 4 tires are available now for both OEM 20” wheel sizes, 10” front and 11” rear rim widths (285/30R20 and 305/30R20). I switched from an AS3+ 255/35/18 on the front for an E90 335i to a AS4 245/35/18 (to limit some rubbing). I immediately noticed how much more comfort-leaning the AS4's were. They did have really good grip but they had significantly less feel and worse initial turn in. If you were to turn the steering wheel less than 5 degrees or so, you almost get no response out of the AS4 until they load up. I think I'm about 5 months and maybe around 5k miles into AS4 ownership give or take and I can't take them anymore for this car. I am switching from the AS4's to a set of AS3+'s that I have sourced. The E90 has a fantastic hydraulic steering rack (I upgraded to the M3 one as well) and the AS4 takes the fun out of it. Furthermore, the AS3+ tends to add a little more sport to the sports-luxury feel that is the BMW E90 platform which is appreciated. The AS3+ just has a superior steering feel that the AS4 and most of the UHP AS tires cannot match.

I have run AS3+ for quite a while on my vehicles and will move to the AS4 when they wear out. One thing, not trying to be critical. To get a proper comparison between ride, noise, and grip the only way to really do it is with a set of new tires with the same wear on them. New tires will typically feel software and quieter just due to there being more tread. As the tread wears down most tires, especially asymmetrical tires, tend to get noiser. None will ever be as bad as Eagle F1's, the worst performance tires I have ever tried, but either way the treads block, as there is less of a water channel, magnify road noise more. I am not trying to dampen your review, which was excellent. I am just wanted to put that out there it is the only way to get a proper comparison between tires.

Excellent points! I am running AS3+ 245/40/18 on our 2019 RS 3, after having failures within several weeks with stock 235/35/19 Conti ExtremeContact tires and our VA country back road runs at speed and their now poor surface conditions due to poor maintenance that caused sidewall failures. The side wall height of the 235/35/19 simply didn't survive such hits! Now with 12,320 miles on the AS3+ I will replace them with the AS4 before winter sets in and we' will make many back road runs in the spring. We run 80-100 miles per trip 3 times a week weather permitting, so our 'back road' use is considerable compared to most drivers, given we run these roads an average 12k miles per year and have for quite a few years. The PRIMARY reason we bought the Audi RS 3!

Nice review. I wonder if the slightly softer ride quality and slightly more sluggish steering response of the newer tire were due to the comparison being between a brand new tire with full tread depth and a worn tire with minimal tread. Tread blocks deflect under load, and the deeper the tread the more the deflection. I had a similar experience when I replaced my Michelin Pilot Super Sports with a set of Pilot Sport 4 S (though some reviewers note the PSS is the stiffer of the two when both are new). If you don’t need snow traction, the PS4S is a good way to go.

In Seattle with temps usually above 40F, I drive Michelin PS4S year round for my M235i. I've got another set of wheels/AS tires for the rare winter weather that drops below 30 but if it snows I'd either not drive or I'd take the Jeep if I really had to get somewhere. I don't see the point of an AS tire anywhere in California that isn't in the mountains. Year round average temps are usually above 40F, where a summer performance tire would perform better in wet/dry handling and braking under all circumstances. And if you're in the mountains, a winter tire would be much better than any AS tire. AS tires are a compromise where they underperform winter tires in the snow and underperform summer tires under all situations above 40F. The only reason I'd consider an AS tire would be if I made regular trips to the mountains and for some reason couldn't have a 2nd of winter tires for winter.
@FaRKle00793 жыл бұрын
I happen to do a fair amount of dirt/gravel road driving and an AS tire definitely has more grip than summer (I've tried getting away with summers for those surfaces). Also, AS tires tend to last longer, so for the crowd looking for longevity it could be a better choice.

Great review! I've gone through two sets of the AS3's on my GTI and it's time for replacements. I was slightly concerned the AS4 might not be as good of a tire, but you've helped put my mind at ease.

How did you like the AS3's? I need new tires for the Audi S4 and I wanted the S4's but they are summer only tire. Thank you,
@shawnseeley95613 жыл бұрын
@@EEEBA1 Think of the as3 as a summer tires with a compound that tolerates temps below 40f. I always ran a dedicated winter tire December through March because the as3 is scary if there's more than a skiff of snow and you want to brake or turn.
@EEEBA13 жыл бұрын
@@shawnseeley9561 Hmm... Interesting. They advertise it as a all season tire. Where I am it gets to 20-30 degrees in the winter.

@@EEEBA1 I live in Colorado. Definitely ok for 20-30f, but when there's snow on the ground you can forget about it.

@@shawnseeley9561 I see. Thank you. It's hard to find all season tires lately. My car is all wheel drive but I still need something good for the snow.

Thanks for the comparison on these two tires. A nice advice on buying guide. Mines are A/S 3+, 245/40/R18, 265/35/R18, with 35000 miles service life so far, still work fine, it's just kinda worn out. I also have test drive there on Niles Canyon Rd., that's why I found it a little familiar : ))

I just installed these on my Cadillac CTS and they are great. They are definitely worth it. I was gonna go with the Goodyear eagle sport all season but after some research I went with the Michelin’s. I noticed a difference in sound on the highway but nothing y’all grown men can’t handle.

Good review...just purchased the 20in AS4 tires for the rear on my Panamera thru Simple Tire via ebay for $100 cheaper per tire than the AS3+. For whatever reason Simple Tire didn't offer the AS4 tire as an option for my vehicle thru their website. I only found out they were an option thru searching Discount Tire. Maybe Simple Tire is trying to get rid of the remaining AS3+ tires first before offering/promoting the AS4s. The reviews seem to be very good for both tires but I was curious as to what the difference between the two are.

I really appreciated your review..and especially in your BMW Sportwagon..I previously had. '15 F31 that I had replaced the o.e. run flats with Continental ExtremeContact DWS (older version). Appears from your comments, you're also familiar with the Conti DWS tire and have chosen to stay with the Michelin. Would love more commentary on the Michelin / Continental UHP All Season comparisons. Am debating now between the two for my MINI Roadster S...which is coming off Continental DW Sport summer tires but I want more spring/fall driving capability in my colder Midwest climate.
@FaRKle00792 жыл бұрын
Yup, I've had DWS06 and ExtremeContact Sports on this car. The DWS06 has a much softer sidewall and I needed higher pressures to get good feedback. The DWS06 were definitely better offroad (dirt/gravel roads) than the Michelins, but both I can maintain good speeds. I think the DWS06 felt a bit more confident in heavy water too.

As tires wear them become noiser. I just replaced my AS 3+ for AS 4's on my WRX. I like the new tires so far. But most of the NVH improvement is down to new tires verses old tires. The old tires had 30k miles on them. To make a fair comparison you need to compare new to new.

Great film presence. Can't wait for those tires to be available for the Tesla Model 3 Performance, which need the 235/35 R20 size. The sidewall protecting the rims is the primary benefit for me.

I had the AS4 tires (20K miles put on them with one track day at Palmer) and replaced them with the Continental DWS06 Plus ... I found the AS4 tires had a slight shift when cornering in a spirited manner... the middle area moves slightly as I have seen in other videos ... I am more impressed with the Continental tires ...

Great review! I just ordered the Michelin AS4 for both my rears. I just replaced the two front tires with the AS3+ last year, and still have a lot of tread life. Would it be alright to run the AS3+ in the front, and AS4 in the rear? I drive a 04 330i zhp (RWD)
@FaRKle00794 жыл бұрын
The AS3+ and AS4 are probably close enough in grip that you can run them mixed. Also since you have RWD it won't matter as much. Nice ZHP!

Ideally, you want the same tire on all 4 corners (especially AWD) but like someone said, they’re probably so close you’ll be fine. But don’t you plan on rotating your tires?? Cuz of you do, the AS4’s will end up on the front eventually.

Excellent video. Thanks you! Timely because I’ve been recommending the 4 just based on Michelin’s recent success when they have introduced upgraded models. Thanks for the data and impressions confirming that! I’m sure the 4’s are quieter but I also wonder if some of the measured noise improvement is due to having full depth new tread as a cushion? TireRack had a firesale on 3+. Time to stalk local C&C’s to find someone with a new set. Or just hack local tire shipping records. Oops, probably shouldn’t have said that out loud. 😀 Looking forward to the sequel video “FaRKle! does Tahoe! Tire Tests In Snow! ❄️
@FaRKle00794 жыл бұрын
Another contributor to the noise reduction could be the tread pattern. The AS4 has a lot more grooves that are angled more longitudinally along the tire whereas the AS3+ they're really all perpendicular to the tire.
