By eliminating much of the expensive acrylic, the Michell Orbe SE offers most of the Orbe's qualities in a cheaper, smaller, and a more aesthetically pleasing package.

Consensus is the plinth makes the TT sound worse. Michell always dem the SE versions at shows for good reason.

Probably sounds better than Gyro SE, agreed,but,i think it's more attractive than the Orbe,by not having it's merry go round look with gold or nickel weights on the silver or black chassis.

Completely wrong. Michell themselves even say that the SE versions of the Gyro/Orbe are considered to be better sounding. The only thing that the full Orbe or Gyro adds is the convenience of the lid.

Don’t waste your time if you live in the US and want one!

Buyers should be wary of so-called "special editions" and upgrades. If the basic design is so flawed that small changes make "massive' (however defined) improvements, then there is a strong likelihood that the original design is faulty and that the upgrades are snake oil to extract more money from the punter. That said Michell turntables are beautifully made, sound great and look really classy.

That can be an unfair assumption on the designer's efforts. Sometimes a designers 'all-out' effort need to be paired down or compromised to make a product marketable and competitive. This may mean using another platter material or motor to make the product competitive within its market range. Sometimes its even for the client to get a 'foothold' on the product rung at a more affordable price point. Upgrades may be a means of getting closer to the designer's original design vision or a means of spreading out cost to performance spend. No doubt there are products there that have 'upgrade' paths that lead to nowhere. But its hard to design products that way because the initial basic unit needs to perform well enough to have a sales following to make stocking or manufacturing to order 'upgrade' products financially worthwhile whether they work or not. No one is going to be interested in improving a fatally flawed design from the off.

The SMEV is not one of the best in fact it's so far down the list it seems almost budget now. The Orbe is again a low to mid level turntable you need to listen to the big guys..So I'll give you two that will make your jaw drop and have you rethink your ideas, so in no particular order Kronos Ltd Edition, Dohman Helix 1 ( with the most revolutionary vibration system ever) I really could go on...To me this is low end..Sorry

You're right there's many high end turntables that will blow you away, The Orbe is a great turntable, but if you have the money there are a lot more out there the Hi Fi world can offer.

Oh! The Sota Sapphire.But no matter which Turntable you use with in your budget. So long as the 2 Basic problems are solved rumble and wow and flutter. You have the best Turntable in the world. The biggest change in sound would be first your cartridge and second your arm. There is a saying the first Linn LP12 to the recent LP12 45 years later in a blind test non of the the listener could hear the differents. It's all snake oil hipe. I own 8 different turntables with the same cartridge Denon 103 with a blind test the listener could not tell which TT being played.(Ref Garrard 301, Thorens 124 MkII, Sota Sappihire, SME20A, Linn LP12, Linn Basik, Lenco L75, GyroDec. If you have that deep pocket than go for it. But think you are just playing with a $60 record and a $250,000 turntable.

I guess to each their own. So long you enjoy the music and it is within our means. I have been setting up turntable for many years, and have seen many types of customers. But one thing surprise's me, you have a lot of people who claim this or that is better or it's a low end equipment under $20,000. Do not know anything when the same cartridge is mounted on varies turntable or Tone arm in a Blind test. That's the only proof. If that person is able to tell, I have seen so call Low end arm becomes a high end arm when a blind test is conducted.

@@josephlazaroo1553 Ahh I hear your mistake..So we listen to the earth just to make sure it's not rumbling and the equipment to do that cost millions..However the noise comes from peanuts..Your $60 record was recorded on equipment that cost ludicrous amounts of money yet it's only $60 but how many 60's were sold...thousands..This recording equipment put all it could into the recording so to get it back again we need something better on the other side..I find it strange that people don't understand this..It's almost like listening to a £1000000 system on KZbin and saying it sounds crap..NOW THAT IS STUPID
