i cried when she said "for all the boys and girls who look like us" because this kind of recognition means so much to asian people, southeast asian people especially. and i know that this award serves to acknowledge michelle's superb performance in the film but other people just don't realize how it opens a whole ton of opportunities for us - the kids that look like them. michelle yeoh is such a goddamn legend, she's my hero.

Sounds more like she expected to win the award due to her ethnicity. So absolutely tired of hearing abut race in this award season. If these actors and actresses in this (horrible) movie were white, it wouldn't have even been nominated and probably would be streaming on Pluto TV by now. Not necessarily. Cate's last oscar nom was for Carol which came out in 2015. The award should go for the best performance only and CB performance was the best of the five nominated. Having said that it's a foregone conclusion now that Michelle yeoh will win next Sunday night.

Cate's movie is a very serious drama whereas hers is more of a comedy/action movie with some dramatic moments sprinkled sporadically throughout the film. It's always easy to assume that it's easier to do comedy than drama, but the truth is it's much harder. That's not to say that Cate isn't deserving of the Oscar. She did some of her best work in this movie and she's truly one of the best actresses of our time. I'd be happy if either of them wins the Oscar.

Cate won BAFTA and critics choice awards. They both won in golden globes under different categories. It's gonna be a tough fight between them this year. I hope it goes to Michelle though. When it comes to the Oscars and predicting the winners, the various Guilds awards are more important than the critics awards. EEAAO won Best Film at the Producers Guild of America awards and Best Director at the DGA awards. Michelle won Best Actress at the Screen Actors Guild awards. Because of those Guild wins, both EEAAO and Michelle are now front runners to win Oscars.

Uhhhh… imagine working hard for YEARS. Decades and you never really get appreciated. People you work with agree that you’re great at your job, clients know you’re reliable. But you never really get a kudos. Meanwhile, you spend the decades watching other people get a ton of appreciation and recognition. Then randomly, you start getting awarded after working the job for decades. It can be overwhelming and you’d probably get choked up too. Furthermore, Michelle Yeoh has made it clear that she thought that her career was winding down. Her best roles were behind her and she felt like she never fully got to show the world all she was capable of.
