You are not the only one! I have so many complaints about gels too! I hit the jackpot once upon a time with Devacurl but unfortunately couldn’t afford to repurchase and also they’ve had a lot of issues reported with long term use. I have been hunting for a good gel ever since. I think after seeing this, I’m going to go for the Arata protein gel. I’ll continue the Fix My Curls flaxseed one as my moisture gel just because how amazing the hair butter and gel combo works for me. You are so right about the Arata original gel, it has almost no hold for my 2b/2c high porosity hair. On a separate note, LOG method has been life changing. I’ve started with using almond oil since I had that at home. Can’t wait to finish it and try one of the other serum-oils.

I've only used the FMC flaxseed gel with the Garnier hair food and the arata advanced curl care leave in conditioner. Worked well and was frizz free both times. Haven't tried the gel with the FMC curl quenching hair butter. Might be too heavy for me but I'll try it once. I've only used the arata protein gel with the other products in the advanced curl care line. I don't know if I'll get the same volume if I use it with other heavier products (I think I got the volume because I used it with the arata detangler and the arata advanced curl care hair cream, (both super light products) When I'm feeling a little ambitious I'll try other combos out and see if I get the same volume and shrinkage.

@@MichelleManuel I also expected that the FMC hair butter + gel combo would be too heavy for me but it’s been incredible. Good shrinkage and hold. The first time I tried it I was in Goa for 2 weeks and I assumed it worked because the sea water and sun exposure was stripping my hair too much and this was compensating. But I once again bought the travel sized set last month and even in normal conditions it’s been great for me. But I probably am not too fussy about volume because I have such low density hair to begin with that there’s not much that products can do to add volume 😅. That’s probably the only aspect you may not like so give it a skip if you have other great options that give you shrinkage, hold and volume. I think I’ll risk the Arata protein gel with my old faithful requil murumuru conditioner that doubles as a leave in and see how it goes. Otherwise I’ll probably get the Arata advance hair care curl cream and try that combo.

@@rohinidasgupta9873 I have both the FMC products. I'll check it out in time. No harm done. I'm sure products in a range are formulated to work best when used together. About the Arata gel, check it out but also make it a point to watch my protein moisture balance playlist. I hear that some people are using protein products on every washday without understanding protein moisture balance and then blaming the products. As a result, protein starts getting a bad rep. It's so upsetting to me. Protein can be so amazing for certain hair types. Brands have only recently starting including high porosity hair types in the conversation. I hate to sit back and watch proteins being demonized based on fear mongering and misinformation. :(

@@MichelleManuel one of the first videos I watched of yours was the protein moisture balance. So I’m definitely mindful of maintaining the balance. Prior to that I had only accidentally stumbled across requil murumuru conditioner and didn’t understand how it transformed my hair 😅. That’s when I realized that my lineup only had moisture products and I needed the protein. I have proper separate lineups now - DC, leave in and gel for moisture and protein.

Also advice for your watch strap issue-- yes you should avoid wearing the watch on that hand till your skin settles down again. I'd also suggest using a good moisturizer/body oil on the forearm where you're wearing the watch and maybe wear it a little looser. If you're sweating a lot (exercising?) while you wear this maybe wipe down the sweat/clean your arm immediately on getting home.

It's soft. If you use enough, depending on your porosity and texture you might not need leave in conditioner. Do a few trials and see what works best. Very shiny as well. Make sure to keep the water at wet but not dripping wet. If your hair is sopping wet you'll dilute the hold. If that happens then add an extra concentrated layer after you're done plopping.

Thank you Michelle for creating this video. I really really realllyyyy wanted this. So I have just started my CG journey and I have just finished with the set wet gel. As they are budget friendly and I thought that on the beginning days I should focus on learning the proper techniques than investing on expensive products. My experience with the gel was fine, I did get good hold but then I thought that they were drying on my hair and plus I sort of experienced hair loss, I don't know whether it is for this gel or because I have just started the journey and it's normal. But I have observed decrease in my hair volume. So I have discontinued using this and was searching for a gel that would give me volume plus good hold. I have been looking for a detailed video like this from a very long time and nobody gives so much of details and raw, unfiltered reviews like you. I think you took the perfect approach to CGM. Focusing on technique over product will help so much more than going on a buying spree and jumping from product to product. I'm really glad you shared. I like shorter curls on men, like Aregorn from Lord of the Rings or the Colin Furth version of Mr. Darcy. It’s just a few of my preferences for a wavy or curly look for men. I prefer longer and bigger curls on women. It’s also easier for men to look neat if they don’t do the big long Little Lord Fauntleroy curls and beards, in my opinion, especially if they don’t have a lot of money and time to do their hair or beard all day. It’s my preference, and a lot of people like it, because it’s very healthy and neat.

@michelle - I get rashes too after wearing my Apple Watch, esp. the silicon ones, but mainly when my hand gets sweaty. So what I do is, I remove the watch, clean the strap with a clean wet cloth/hanky and keep it for about 5 mins and then wear it back. You can try it out. Although, I’ve stopped using Silicon straps and have been using other ones. Hope it helps 😊

I currently don't use any other hair product except shea moisture manuka honey shampoo+conditioner. the lower part of my hair gets pretty well defined curls just from scrunching out the conditioner. but the upper part is somewhere between wavy and straight. It took me months before I could wear my hair for a week straight. If you watch my log video you'll see what my hair looks like during the week. My advice for you right now is to wear it till you can and on other days just do a simple updo. I've put up some reels on Instagram on some updos I wear usually

I don't refresh usually. From time to time I use a serum or an oil. I only refresh when I have a fancy occasion like a party, a gig etc. On other days I do an updo. I shift the focus by making something else about my look the focal point. Big earrings. Eye makeup. A big bow. Feathers beads etc. You'll see reels on all these looks on Instagram.

Hey Shobana, thanks so much. So basically hard hold gels will leave your hair feeling drier compared to soft hold gels. So either use a leave in conditioner that is slightly more moisturising than the one you're currently using or use a little more leave in than you usually use. Sotc with an oil. For adequate moisture in my 2b 2c 3a high porosity hair, I prefer using a level 3 product with a hard hold gel.

The ones i mentioned in the video are silicone free. But they do have parabens. I wouldn't recommend them either way. FMC gel is relatively inexpensive. Better ingredients as well.

Just wanted to mention that I just started using the moms Co. Shampoo and I really liked it although I wanted to know that’s since it is a protein shampoo is it advisable to use it once a week or twice as I wash my hair twice a week

The moms co shampoo does not have protein in the top 5 ingredients. Use it for a month. It shouldn't cause overload with repeated use. If you see any changes in your results after a month, let me know.

Love all your videos...as a beginner to wavy hair journey I'm so frightened of using gel....I Used Fix My Curl protein gel and I hated it, it made my hair super frizzy, weighed down my hair so I had no wave pattern at all, it was so bad I had to wash my hair the next day😢😢😢....now I'm so afraid of trying any gel...for now I'm using Fix my Curl hair butter which I love along with grapeseed oil as a sealant....I had a question, do u scrunch immediately after applying gel? Also can grapeseed oil be used for SOTC? Sorry I'm completely clueless here....also wanted to thank you for your videos, been a silent follower till now, they've helped me so much❤❤❤

Hi ! Was curious to know if over the years using gel on your hair regularly has caused any adverse efforts or damage. Since sometimes a product gives good results but over the years it damages.... Which i have heard some boys complain about who applied gel on their hair regularly. I am also assuming that maybe it was Bec of alcohol in the gel they used. Do let me know what your personal experience has been

I haven't had any issues with gels. The key is to make sure your hair is moisturised adequately under the gel. Meaning use a leave in conditioner or curl cream. Or if you're only styling with one product, make sure its a moisturizing gel and doesn't dry your hair out.

A diffuser is not a must have. Just begin and see if you're going to commit. Once you've commited get a diffuser only then cause they're expensive

Hi, nice video! I have just started cgm since 2 weeks, I have 3a type hair, i haven't bought any hair gel yet. I am using st. Botanica go curls shampoo+ reequill murumuru conditioner + garnier fructis papaya hair food as live in conditioner, is gel required in this routine? Can I use aloe Vera gel?

If you don't have protein sensitive hair, you can use protein once every few washes. (Eg once every 4 washes or once every 3 washes).

what do u suggest for humid weather.. protien conditioners or moisturising… my doubt is that in humid condition there is already a lot of vapour condition around.. so adding more moisture would make it more burdened?
