The University of Michigan's football stadium is called the "Big House" because it's the biggest in the country, and even with 109,901 seats, its biggest games are always sold out. From: AERIAL AMERICA: Michigan bit.ly/1trM8vX

Not just the largest stadium in the country, the largest stadium in the world not located in North Korea. Only Pyonyang's 1st of May Stadium, with a capacity of 114,000 is larger. Camp Nou, Wembley, Melbourne Cricket Grounds, the Rose Bowl, Estadio Azteca, and Estadio Marcana all pale in comparison to the Big House. I have been living in Europe for a while now and European soccer fans I work with are amazed to hear that American college football stadiums make up 8 of the 10 largest stadiums in the world, with the other two being the 1st of May Stadium in Pyongyang at number 1, and the Melbourne Cricket Grounds at number 10.

The iconic shrine that is "The House that Yost Built" (i.e. Immortal UM coach and legendary visionary UM Athletic Director who holds the Football Record for most FOOTBALL coaching NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS with 1 team at: 6 and who won 10 Big Ten Titles , as well as having a 56 game unbeaten streak!) is not only the largest college football stadium in the USA but also the most unique stadium in US history with MOST of its seating actually BELOW ground Level ! The sight lines are marvelous and it has more great vision seats than any major stadium. Along with The Holy Grail Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Boston's Fenway Park, and Chicago's Wrigley Field, Ann Arbor's UM Stadium , A.K..A. "The Big House" are considered the Mount Rushmore of USA team Sports venues/ stadiums. The UM Stadium was built in 1927. Mr. Yost -who invented the now ubiquitous multi sports "Field" Houses and Intramural sports buildings one sees on practically every college campus, made sure that "if ever need be" UM stadium would remain the largrest because it was engineered and designed in its foundations and moorings to always bemore expandable and thus the largest on campus stadium with a capacity that could conceivably exceed 150,000 people! Throughout the years, whenever UM has expanded this shrine, it always -by tradition- lists the capacity ending in an "01". Example:109, 601 ; with the 01 an unnamed, unidentified seat inside the stadium in honor of "the spirit" another legendary college football coach ,Fritz Crisler. , who coached at UM for 10 seasons. Though UM is world famous for its preeminent academics, Michigan is also the BY FAR winningest team in college football history (all levels). , This is quite an accomplishment given that UM's all time S.O.S. (Strength of Schedule) is rated #1 toughest of all time. UM is also #1 all time in winning percentage among major colleges. Mighty Michigan has a Big Ten record 42 Big Ten Big Ten Championships to go along with 11 National Titles in that sport. and has a winning record both in the regular season and in bowl games vs the South's SEC Conference, as well as all time top 10 Super Powers: Nebraska, Penn State, Notre Dame, and even against arch rival The Ohio State University. UM and Ohio state are bitter rivals in all sports and their rivalry is generally considered to be Greatest Rivalry in all sports at ANY level. (For reference :watch the acclaimed HBO movie The Rivalry about the UM/Ohio Border war and OSU/UM sports rivalry). The UM FOOTBALL Program is often called "The Snow White of Integrity of all Sports" . It has never received even a minor cheating violation by the NCAA nor any major sanctions either that invlove illegal payola, other illegal material benefits to players, nor academic fraud which in this day and age of rampant college cheating scandals involving 1, 2 or all 3 of the above types of misconduct is refreshing. The school justly and proudly proclaims that the University of Michigan is the ONLY college football program IN HISTORY at any Level (including the Ivy league Schools) that can boast that its football alumni include ALL of the following: " An astronaut, a US Supreme Court Justice, Members of US Congress, members of Presidential Cabinets, CEOs of billion dollar Fortune 500 Companies, Federal Judges, and yes, even a President of the United States of America." As the video pointed out, many of these future "Leaders and Best" played inside the esteemed Big House during their own UM student days. Once a future US President who was then a Young Broadcast Radio JOURNALIST CALLED A UM vs Iowa GAME FROM THE UM press box HIGH ATOP UM STADIUM WHILE DOWN ON THE football playing field (Ronald Reagan!) while another future US President was hiking the football at Center for the Wolverines; Gerald R Ford!. UM stadium was the first on campus stadium to seat 100,000 people and though there are now several stadiums that seat that huge sized capacity it is sometimes called the" Empire State Building of Stadiums" - in part because so many UM students and alums have ALWAYS HAILED FROM New York City and other areas along the entire East Coast, but mainly because- though there are several buildings in the USA today that are at least 100 stories high- the Empire Building , like UM, was the "First" to hit the magic number of "100" in their respective ways! UM stadium has also been the sight of the WORLD RECORDS for the largest crowd for a Hockey Game (December, 2010 : when UM beat intra state rival MSU before over a 100,000 people despite it being winter time ) and the world record for a professional Hockey game . This happened between 2 NHL teams ( just after a huge snow storm and in below zero weather and yet over 100,000 undeterred , enthusiastic fans SHOWED UP FOR THE Exciting GAME ON JANUARY 1ST, 2015! ).UM stadium also holds the all time single season ON CAMPUS capacity crowd ( a UM victory over Notre Dame in the last seconds) ; as well as the largest and second largest ever crowds to watch a professional SOCCER GAME ON USA soil., (game between Manchester United and Real Madrid powerhouses from Europe). The UM stadium has hosted billionaire blue bloods and the poorest of poor custodian alike sitting and cheering side by side. Dignitaries such as current US Supreme Court Justice John Roberts, the Entire NY Philharmonic Orchestra(which played at halftime down on the field!) ,, Auto inventor Henry Ford, (an avid UM fan from Detroit, about an hour away by automobile) , and many many other celebrities have witnessed UM play before the largest crowd in the USA on any given Saturday. UM has a tradition pre-game and/or at half time to honor guests or "honorary" team captains: Michael Phelps, Michael Jordan, James Earl Jones, Andrew White the First American to Walk in Space, and many other world famous high achievers have been so introduced. People such as the Australian academy award winning actor Russell Crowe, Baseball Hall of Famer Derek Jeter, and many many others have been spotted inside the Big House in the bleachers or -with official UM permission- walking the sidelines enjoying a Wolverine football game. Another utilitarian use of the UM stadium is the long time Michigan tradition of holding UM graduation Commencement ceremonies inside the UM stadium every Spring! Past Commencement speakers inside UM stadium have included US President Lyndon Baines Johnson who delivered his famous AND HISTORICAL USA ANTI-POVERTY" Great Society" speech there , George Herbert Walker Bush (the elder) ; Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Google co Founder Larry Page, Bill Clinton, Ralph Bunche, William Fulbright, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Earl Warren, Journalist Edward R Morrow, John Kenneth Galbraith, Justice Thurgood Marshall, and many other distinguished visitors who have come to ,and graced, UM stadium with their presence . UM stadium was the first stadium of any kind and any level to install Electronic Scoreboards(early 1930s) . Most fans arrive early to UM games in order to watch the famous UM Marching Band which often performs creative and elaborate half time shows , as well. Many a college football player on opposing teams have claimed that the highlight of their own college career -or at least a Major highlight was being able to play the University of Michigan inside world famous UM stadium. .

There has been recent talk, buzz really, of the possibility of having the FIRST Ever MAJOR Rock Concert "Live from the Big House". Midwestern legend and Poet Rocker Bob Seger is ALWAYS the first musician or band to be mentioned when fantasizing about a Rock Concert inside historic M stadium( Seger hails from Ann Arbor Town and attended high school directly across the street from UM on the diagonal called Ann Arbor Pioneer High) . Imagine He & his Band, or Madonna ( a UM alumna), The Stones, Byonce, Katy Parry, ANYONE that is anyone talented and famous having A live CONCERT IN rock OR in country western music INSIDE M Stadium and recording it! GUARANTEED, when and if that ever happens? That record album when released will not only SELL OUT but likely set sales records. So why has this not happened "yet"? The answer according to my inside sources is two fold: 1. Michigan- though revered world wide for its academics, acclaimed faculty, and famous alumni- is often accused of being "arrogant' and "too particular in the extreme". They reject many many more requests ANNUALLY than they accept when Hollywood movie production teams inquire to shoot movies on campus or to mention "University of Michigan" in their movies or to have characters with "UM backgrounds" etc. Understandably, UM and its able team of lawyers consents to such requests sparingly and only after they have received and carefully studied submitted / offered "scripts". You can bet the farm that any Entertainment group wanting to play in cool, hip Ann Arbor by holding a concert inside the now acoustically awesome Big House stadium is going to have to be a band or singer that may be somewhat controversial ( The Rolling Stones) but not extremely or divisively so: sooo probably No if you are Nugent, Ted, or say Guns & Roses, or the unstable Kanye , etc. but a definite Yes to Bob Seger, Yes to Barbara Streisand, heck yes to the corpse of Frank Sinatra - Just prop him up! (LOL). Although she pushes the artistic envelope quite far to put it mildly, Liberal UM would probably WINCE AND yet say Yes to UM alumna Madonna ( her daughter Lourdes attends UM currently and is in its famous Music/Theater/ Dance major DEPARTMENT so that would help Madonna's chances ) ...so ever meticulous UM would subject any ENTERTAINER EVEN Taylor Swift TO "STRICT METICULOUS UM SCRUTINY" even if UM were inclined to allow a costly and time consuming set up , security arrangements, logistical operation, etc. for such an event. . Will this eventually happen? Absolutely. When and "who" is anyone's guess. THE REVERED , altruistic, MORAL, UM may ONE DAY WISELY DECIDE TO give the go ahead ALLOW a unique "concert for Cause (Charity)" by several musical groups for, say, a natural DISASTER with proceeds going to charity.. More likely, UM wou;ld permit a concert but only on condition UM gets 50-100 % (think 100%) of the Gate and all concessions profits! Don't laugh. IF a live concert inside famous UM Stadium goes well, album sales could make any Rock Group a TON of money such that UM getting the "house receipts" may in fact be a wise business decision by the Rock Group or other entertainer [playing there. The publicity and media for this event would be priceless! 2. A MAJOR OBSTACLE UM official have confided is the "set up" for such a big event. Because Rock Stages outdoors now have/ require such HUGE speakers most of the staging equipment would have to come in via large Army Helicopters up over the4 massive stadium and flown down onto the playing field for set up. The doors to UM stadium would just be too narrow to bring in the equipment by land. Air is thus the only way. That is not easy; it is time consuming and costly though certainly not impossible. Any concert managed/ produced with great attention to DETAIL BY BOTH SIDES -which UM is famous FOR DOING IN ANY OF ITS VIRTUOUS ENDEAVORS IT SEEMS- would almost certainly be a huge and awesome success. Tickets would sell out in MINUTES not days or weeks or months in advance. You could literally have it in a December, or Cripes even an early April Michigan SNOWSTORM at 20 below zero and LITERALLY it would still sell out! However, for artistic and practical purposes, such a once in a lifetime concert would likely take place in Summer or Early Autumn on a Non Football weekend of course. Let's all hope that it happens one day Soon.

If I remember corectly, the stadium was built in 1927. Litle remembered is the fact that it was built with foundations in anticipation of a second deck. GO BLUE, third generation.
