Hi Guys, I used to captain for Star Line which you took to Mackinac Island. Fun fact...That catamaran behind you @6:25 is the sister ship of the "Straits Express" which you rode on under the bridge to the Island. That boat was used for years to service the island but was eventually sold to the company that goes out to the Pictured Rocks

Hi Brian! Wow! We love learning fun facts about all the places we visit, but it never is better than we get it from the locals! Thank you for sharing that information. You have probably brought joy to thousands of folks throughout the years by ferrying them to Mackinac Island. It was a highlight for us and can't wait to come back to stay longer next time. Thank you for reaching out to us and sharing! Blessings, Rhonda and Stan

Hello Kori and Jack, thank you for joining us! You must go!! It’s so beautiful especially in the fall. Definitely go in the fall. The biting flies suck in the summer. Picture Rock and Pastys are some of the favorite things of our beautiful state. The sunset cruise is priceless. I perfer the fruit pastys o er the meat ones. Your right about them needing salt and pepper. We actually went to the same place as you and also tried them in AuTrain. They were about the same.

We loved Pictured Rocks but took the cruise during the day. Beautiful video and cruise. I tried a Pastie but did not care for it. I should have tried the apple one. I love chasing waterfalls too. The UP is a whole different world but we loved the place and people.

Nice pull through, level, spacious site! Nice pictures and video of Pictured Rocks. The sunset cruise is the best way to see the beauty there! 🥰 Typically authentic pasties have more of a pot pie type crust, not bread like. interesting. The fruit pie you had was more how the crust should have been. They looked good in spite of that. :) -Michelle

Hi Michelle, we were surprised to find out it is not Yooper proper to have gravy on it. Who would have thunk it! Real Yoopers only eat it with Ketchup. It was a fun experience. We would much rather have the lighter crust. Thank you for joining us again. We will see you next week for another episode of the Upper Peninsula on Over The Hill Adventures. Another great video on Michigan! We don't usually find ourselves drawn to KOAs, but that one looked really nice. And that sunset cruise is certainly the thing to do. Nice hike too! Did you see a lot of places selling pasties ? As usual your footage is fantastic and the video is really well put together. Great entertaining video :)
@OverTheHillAdventures11 ай бұрын
Hi Bob and Dang! You guys are the best. We appreciate your encouraging words 🥰 We have found KOA’s to be reliable and trustworthy. Some definitely are nicer than others, but we find them to be in convenient locations. We did not find pasties to be in a lot of locations. In fact, one place we went to near Tahquamenon Falls had sold out. They are a hot commodity 😂 We heard breakfast pasties are yummy too just didn’t know that was a thing while we were there. We were frustrated with our GoPro handle making a rattling sound in these videos. We never realized until now! 😏 Time for a new handle! Hope all is well. See you soon!

The sunset cruise was beautiful! Was it expensive? I love pasties! I first had pasties when I was about 15 years old and my family traveled around Lake Superior. They are often made with a pastry vs a bread. You eat them with your hands. They originated with Cornish miners. They brought them down in the mines for lunch. I’ve made them (beef) at home many times. Never had apple pasties. 😊

Very interesting video! I've been to the Pictured Rocks before but Dottie hasn't. We did go to Miner's Castle in 1979 before the northern turret collapsed and slid into Lake Superior (that happened in 2006 - a very sad event but an important part of the geologic process of erosion on the lake). It really is a geologic wonder! As a geologist, I really appreciate that observation. The yellow sand layers are 500 million years old (Cambrian Era) and are part of the Munising Formation. At the base (many miss this) is a red sandstone called the Jacobsville Sandstone. This sand is much older but is roughly 600 to 900 million years old (late Precambrian). Many of the courthouses and stone buildings in this part of the country are made from quarried Jacobsville Sandstone. As for pasties, my late sister tried many different pasties around the UP and said the Jean Kay's Pasties and Subs in Marquette had the best ones that she had tasted. What ever. Of course, her name was Jean, so that may have had some effect in her decision-making process 😉😂. I bought 4 dozen pasties when I was in Marquette for her memorial service in 2016 and hauled them back to Texas in a Yeti Ice Chest with a little help from dry ice wrapped in newspaper. They were terrific! Now, the only condiment a true Yooper uses on these things is ketchup. Gravy identifies the person as from "below the bridge" (in other words, Lower Michigan). These are known as "Trolls". Stan can be forgiven since y'all are from California by way of Arizona, so such breaches of Pasty Etiquette can be overlooked. Just don't do it again! 😉😂😂🤣🤣🤣 Safe travels and God Bless y'all in the New Year. Your friends, Bob and Dottie

Hello Bod and Dottie, we were discussing the collapse of the arch at Chapel Rock. We wondered when the arch collapsed? We figured it was because of human traffic over the arch may have sped up the process. It was amazing to be there and see all the incredible rock formations. Truly blessed! The Pasties were very interesting. We enjoyed them. I won’t put gravy on the next time that’s for sure. It seemed everyone was ordering it in front of us with gravy. So, this must be the way! lol 😂. Thank you for joining us as always. We are glad this video was in your wheel house. Hope you had a wonderful New Year! Blessings to you both, Stan and Rhonda❤️
@robertcolpitts453411 ай бұрын
@@OverTheHillAdventures - From what I've read, the arch that connected Chapel Rock to the mainland collapsed in 1940. The event was brought about by freeze-thaw and wave action from the lake. I believe the pine tree that is connected to the mainland by the long tap root is about 250 years old. When I was a kid (7 or 8, I think), I climbed out onto Miner's Castle. There weren't any barriers or fences then, just a sandy trail leading to the "Castle". The loose sand made it real slippery. Some people have slipped off over the years and have fallen to the lake below and had to be rescued. Everyone survived except one. I got scolded for going out there but I had a blast! I could see the fractures running under the north turret and that gave me the willys, so I never went out there again. That was in '61 or '62. I still remember it like it was yesterday, so it must've made a deep impression on me. Yeah, almost no one puts gravy on a pasty in the UP if they're from there, just ketchup; only those from the Lower Peninsula do gravy. They used to be quite anal about it. Now, you only get a friendly scolding. 😉 We're looking forward to y'all's next video. Could y'all make them a little longer? They are so much fun to watch! By the way, how did y'all like the Munising KOA? It looked real shady in there. God Bless y'all! Bob and Dottie

Pasties were originally the food that miners in the 1800s ate for lunch. I love the venison ones. They are a finger food.

If you google Cornish Pasty - they are the traditional British ones - you'll notice the crust is different - The edges of the pasties must be sealed by crimping them in traditional Cornish fashion - so when the miners ate them, they were not able to wash their hands so they held them by the crust so as not to get their meal dirty and would throw away the crust as it was only used as a vessel with which to hold and eat it :)
