Back in WWII and some time before multi-viscosity motor oils were introduced, they would dilute the engine oil with gasoline to make help it flow more easily in extreme cold conditions. Once the engine was warmed up, the fuel that was added to the oil evaporates and the oil is back to its original viscosity.

OIl can make all the difference when getting a car started in the winter. I remember my first car (2000 volvo s70 TDI) would never have issues starting in the winter (finland) even when degrees dropped to -20. But one time i didnt realize i had put the much thicker mobil1 oil in my car, this resulted in the car being sooo slow to start and often times it just wouldnt. When i realized the issue i quickly changed back to conoco 10w-30 and voilá, continued to work perfectly fine.

A Pro tip would be that regarding modern cars that if the Users Manual specifically do not suggest to do otherwise, do not touch the gas pedal during start-up. On some cars pumping the pedal during start is the best way to slow down the start-up process or even hinder it totally.

@annaplojharova14002 жыл бұрын
The only advantages hybrids have is the huge battery (for the engine stsrt). And even that may not help, as the traction batteries use to use chemistries that are good at energy density, but often suck at low temperature performance, so for a cold start you are stuck with the small lead acid again...
@truecamvidea5881 Жыл бұрын
@@annaplojharova1400 What? Traction batteries usually have nothing to do with the start battery. @guillaumegaudin694 As you have winter diesel, you also have winter petrol.

I think any modern car can start until -60, but it just damages the engine much faster. I would probably recommend using AMSOIL 0 W 20 in these areas where temps drop below -30. I've seen lab tests they did and the oil flowed until -70 degrees. Pretty impressive.

@WymiataczPlays Жыл бұрын
