I had the pleasure of meeting Mick Taylor in Atlantic City in 1999 when he did a show at the Trump Marina. I went to grab a beer before the show and when I turned around I literally bumped into this gentleman, it was starting to get dark out and we had a conversation for like 15 minutes I did not even realize it was him...... After 15 minutes he says to me okay mate, I have a show to do how would you like to come back and have a drink with me afterwards? I was Frozen in my tracks.... It was actually him I had been speaking to, (keep in mind that it been about 20 years since I had seen what he looked like)anyway I ended up joining him after the show and I sat in the back room with him and about seven or eight other fans sipping scotch and chatting into the wee hours of the morning....it was an amazing experience he is an absolute gentleman and a wonderful person to be around... Not a stitch of ego in his body!

Mick, I was front row at The Garden in 72. I missed half of Brown Sugar right after you guys took the stage and almost lost both my sneakers getting there. But managed to spend the rest of your set belly up against the stage. Believe me Brother, you and Keith were more than special together...you two were magical...on stage and in the studio. And thanks to Ya-Ya's your live magic will mesmerize generations well after you and I are gone. Peace.

We all seem to agree that the greatest Stones era was the Mick Taylor era. Besides having EPIC talent by himself, as he mentioned NO ONE could compair to the Kieth/MT sound. Before him it was Beatles and Stones. Brian Jones was a huge part of the band at that time. It was everything put out in the MT era that made them "the greatest rock and roll band in the world. If it wasn't for MT joining the band at that time we would not know The Stones we do today.

Such a hero of mine…I love how everyone worked on Honkey Tonk Women, and I love how Jagger said he took Country Honk in this wildly different way, so that’s awesome that he came in and started…Dude is forever a Rolling Stone

Any MT solo will make you weep with emotion. He was miles ahead, melodically, harmonically etc than any other RS. Film maker and music historian Robert Palmer summed it up when he said "'Mick Taylor plays pure Blues with the added imagination & skill of a jazz man"'> Some say he lacked a persona BUT another personal ego is a real threat to Jagger & Richards as Steve Marriott found out when he nearly took over the band at an audition.("'Get that little fucker outta here!"')

Steve Marriott could outsing Jagger anytime. No wonder Jagger didn't want him in the band

Yes, indeed, they were special. There have been some great guitar pairings, e.g. Duane Allman & Dickie Betts, Carlos Santana & Neal Schon. But Mick Taylor & Keith Richards were a seamless pair like some great, two headed, rock guitar monster. They were the best.

@mecormany MT gave birth to a whole new Stones era. He took them from The Beatles/Stones era in the 60's to Exile and Sticky Fingers in the 70's. Mick and Keith have always been the main songwriters of the band. Yes, they put out their greatest material when MT was in the band, superior to the Brian and Ronnie eras combined. And MT was a HUGE part of it. He is my fave.

Mick Taylor was the best partener Keith ever had. Yeah Brian could master any instrument, and Ronnie plays the same sloppy way Keith does......but you cannot beat the Stones from Beggar's Banquet thru Goat's Head Soup. I'm including Beggar's Banquet eventhough Taylor didn't play on it. Mainly because it's the album where the Stones really matured. If I had to pick the best Brian Jones album....Between the Buttons. Best Ronnie Wood.....either VooDoo Lounge or Bigger Bang

Mick Taylor left the Stones for 2 reasons: He would die because of drugs. His nose was almost boring when he left. The other reason is that keith was jealous of him for being so good with the guitar and keith created a tense atmosphere because of this. A loss to the rock. Maybe he will start playing with them soon.

Mick Taylor is Like an Aged Grange Hermitage while Ronnie Wood is a Cheap cask wine as far as guitarists go. Ronnie is a great Painter But a very average Guitarist {Faces aside} In the stones he is just plain lazy. Luckiest Guitarist on the Planet without doubt. Taylor Makes his Gibsn sing in the Breeze. @mecormany It has nothing to do with money, or being a star, it's about pride in being a key member in the greatest rock and roll band in the world, and having part in some of the greatest albums ever writen. Till this day he is most known for his work in The Stones. Like I said he could have stayed in the band and do his side stuff also, he was a fool to leave.

I always wondered what the hell MT was thinking when he left The Stones. Okay so he felt his talent was being held back by the band, he wanted a solo career and to work with other artists. And he did! As many other artists in bands that never left. Your on top of the world. You had part in some of the greatest albums and songs ever writen. Where you gonna go? Your a Rolling Stone who would leave?

Mick Taylor made the Stones great performers especially when long, flashy solos were the big thing in concert...he may not have been the multi-instrumentalist that original Stones' leader Brian Jones was but his awesome command of the guitar and the beautiful tones he coaxed from it made his time with the band special; in my opinion, they never sounded the same onstage after that...I sorta liked Ron Wood in The Faces but he has to be the worlds luckiest guitarist on the planet...I play better!

torihyo As much as I hate to admit it, I think you're right. Keith is hung up with posing while Ronnie has become nothing but an ornament on stage and only squeezes in an odd riff here and there. Neither one plays to their ability. Someone has to sit them both down and force them to listen to early 70s Stones for Keith and early 70s Faces for Woody to perhaps wake them up a bit. They are riding on their past for sure but I'll probably still go see them if they decide to tour again.

@Maverikk68 What has Mick Taylor done before and after the Stones? People who obviously have no clue what they are talking about should just shut up. I'm not wasting time giving you a list but read up on the guy and you'll learn something. The real question is what have the Stones done since he left. Samo Samo. And yes, Keith was jealous. He also is collecting royalties on at least six song he never played on and MT co-wrote.

I agree with samswank. Mick Taylor for me WAS the Stones. Brian Jones was alright, he had many problems. The Rolling Stones with Brian and just in general before Mick Taylor sounded like shit. They sounded live like a bunch of guys in a garage just learning. There timing and sound was bad. Mick Taylor gave the band a new life. He licks and playing and sound and feel was so incredible, without him no doubt the Stones would of been doomed. Since MT left, they have been horrible.

@TheRabidPosum Lot of reasons but he had no great love for being a rock star. He says the question to ask him is not why did he leave the Stones, but why did he join the Stones. He's still playiing and creating. The Stones have been spinning their wheels for 35 years. If you measure creative success by money, wny didn't he join Abba? Woody can ride the gravy train and be a hack like KR and MJ. MT couldn't. When you can play circles around the rest of the band, what's the point?

@daubreyjaneweirdsley oh baby, no 5 strings guitar down in Clarksdale, but these very special things that James Superchikan Johnson is making in his workshop. You should try them as I did, & you' ll have the great pleasure to meet the guy, very strict & severe as a teacher anyway. @TheRabidPosum I have to disagree with you. In the eyes of MJ & KR the GlimmerTwins *are* the core of the Stones. Everyone else is expendable. What do you think MT meant when he said the Stones should have friends come and play lead in the studio after his departure? I am a huge Faces fan. Saw then 5 times before they pulled the plug. Their Nod & Wink tour came to The Garden in NY and blew me away. But with all respect to RW, MT and KR were as Mick said in this interview...."special."

That's interesting, tube, because I believe that whole 'keith and woody mesh' point, while being quite valid, is the primary reason the stones guitarists, imho, suck. Have you seen the scorcese film? Man, those guys do nothing but pose and act the fool up there. Woody seems drunk, and both their playing leaves much to be desired. Enough Chuck Berry riffs and goofing off guys- Let's get Mick T back and do one last tour that'll knock their socks off!

Mick Taylor was a the best guitarist they had and its definitely their best period......BUT he had no type of character or anything memorable about him other than his playing. You have to take on the persona of being in the stones and he was never able to do that. Charlie gets a pass and Ronnie may be an inferior player but he fits in, in that sense.
