(John) Mickey Laux, a chemistry professor at the Orange Coast College, comes to the University of California, Irvine every summer to participate in the AirUCI summer teacher workshop. This video catches Mickey in the process of explaining how a GCMS (gas chromatography mass spectrometry) instrument works to teachers who did not have any prior experience to this technique.

I am a former student of Mickey, at Saddleback CC, and have to say he leaves a lasting impression. If you get the opportunity to take a class with Mick you won't be disappointed. Have you won a Nobel Prize yet Mick?

In the light mass filter case, why is the speed boat not fast enought to prevent collision as in the negative rod example?

There is something I don't understand, if the quadrupole only lets certain molecules to pass, does that mean that the others (the ones thaht crash) are never detected? how would we meassure them then?

@@zhang19242Liv ok, thanks, so it's assumed that every slice of substance has the same composition, isn't it?

@@lisandromilesi794 Hi I might need more context from u to answer that question properly. But in general different molecules can be detected as the same m/z. That's why tandem MS is what we always use to identify proteins, peptides etc.
