Hello! I recalled datamining this game 10 years ago for red book audio files and studying it's audio engine. So, my memory might serves me wrong. But, IIRC the reason why the stage jingle were not playing after clearing a stage was due to programming error. The file was actually called by the game's code, but a typo was made LOL. Basically the game was unable to load the jingle right after the BGM that played before. (it has a cooldown, and the cooldown was set to be a specific time, ex: loading times.) Making the code and the red book audio that associated with it went unsued, because it was never called by the game engine properly due to the cooldown. Thank you for covering one of the hidden gems of the PlayStation 1. Albeit inferior to their 16-bit counterpart xD

Good video. One of the reasons for the PSX gameplay issue has to do with being a PAL region only game, that it runs at 50fps/50Hz. Compared to 60fps/60Hz on NTSC region.

Fun fact, a sequel was in the works but it was cancelled in favor of a Toy Story game. There's footage of the first two levels here on KZbin but there's wasn't much work done on either before the plug was pulled.

i prefer the genesis version. I honestly don't like either the play station changed music themes. Is the boss theme even used in the ports ? it's one of my favourite music themes on the console. The cd versions imitate better the Disney style. but OG version has better themes. If the sega cd version used remastered versions of those themes, id prefer it.

This is exactly how I feel. The only thing holding back the SCD version is the soundtrack change. They should have just stuck with orchestrated versions of the Genesis tracks. The way Earthworm Jim SE was handled from Genesis to SCD was what I was expecting.

The music in the Mad Doctor level where one had to mix the glasses was much more magical in the SNES version.

Was it? Compared to sega cd and ps1?

@@MagnusVideoGames Yes, I own both the Sega Mega CD and PS1 version. I looked especially forward to that one track, but they changed it 😐

The entire soundtrack is inferior to the SNES and Genesis ports.

Even with all the details, I prefer the PSX version, thanks to the modification community we have a 60hz version and it plays at the speed of the Snes version (for me the best) Also it seems that the psx version had better resolution, Sega CD seems to use a filter, I like to see the pixels of the characters.

Wow, thanks for making this fantastic video! I always wondered which CD-version is best.

Great comparison video! I grew up with the PS1 version so it's interesting to see what was changed for better or worse. Also I wonder if the lag from ducking and the direction when throwing marbles is only from how the code was changed. Since the PS1 was PAL the game was running at a lower framerate (60 to 50/ 30 to 25), making the game feel more sluggish?

There is also another issue which it’s moves at 50hz. It was only released in Europe for some reason

I wonder if some of the missing animations in the Playstation version were actually tweaks for gameplay reasons, e.g. improving turn speed by removing the in-between frame. I find the weasels on the Sega versions incredibly annoying in parts too, so I wonder if they were just nerfed to reduce frustration. Talking of the last level: there's a change at the beginning. I believe that the swinging platforms have had their positions slightly changed, and their swinging mechanics are different. The Playstation version of that seems harder to me.

I only ever played the ps1 version but it would seem to me a number of changes were probably balancing to make it easier. And to be fair I recall finding it hard as a kid... I don't think I ever beat it.

I suspect the SEGA CD version had a bigger budget since it was a big release and the PSX version was a quick and cheap port job.

Hi what gaming console would I need for a sega cd version?
@MagnusVideoGames3 жыл бұрын
A Sega CD console connected to a Sega genesis is the US. Or a Sega CDX combo console in the US. Elsewhere, you need a Mega Cd and a mega drive.

I'm a year late in saying this, but- don't bother getting a legitimate system- Sega CD hardware is prone to failure, and many games for the system sell for ludicrous amounts second-hand. Emulation is the way to go.
