John Hanrahan's Movie Star Interviews

John Hanrahan's Movie Star Interviews

Күн бұрын

Mickey Rourke has been one of Hollywood’s most colorful and controversial stars.
While his private life has drawn much publicity and speculation, his choice of movies, and his performances, have also provoked a lot of comment…both within the industry and in the wider world of gossip columns and media coverage.
Three of those films are Angel Heart, with Robert DeNiro and Lisa Bonet,, 9 ½ Weeks with Kim Basinger, and Michael Cimino’s gangster film, Year of the Dragon.
I caught up with Mickey in his star trailer in the backstreets of New Orleans during the shooting of Alan Parker’s Angel Heart, a mystery-thriller that takes us into the dark world of voodoo and murder.
Mickey was playing a private detective sent on a curious and, ultimately, dangerous search for a missing singer…
Despite his take it or leave it attitude, Mickey Rourke has gone on to complete more than 90 movie roles.
These have included The Wrestler and Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man.
But in the 90’s he returned to boxing, a sport he loved and was quite good at as an amateur in his younger days, to try his luck as a professional.
He won a number of bouts but took such a pounding in some of them that he had to have reconstruction surgery on his face before returning to the big screen.
His latest films are Warhunt and The Commando.

I’ve been looking for an interview with Mickey about these films and this point in his career. In my opinion, those are his 3 best films and he never really talks about them. Very interesting interview thanks.

So glad to hear this but breaks my heart cuz I love his films n his craft but hate how Hollywood treated him. I'm from Australia n glad our country brought up Mickey Rourke is one of the greatest actors n just hope he gets more chances to show his talent like he got in the wrestler or sin city. Mickey is one of the best. I'm glad we get to hear Mickey actually going into these films. But I also love year of the dragon and Johnny handsome. Greatest actors ever.

Thanks so much for this, I love listening to Micky Rourke's voice on this interview , ...could listen to him all night, it's a shame his voice has gotten so deep and gravelly in later years, from maybe too much smoking or something. I miss this in his later work now his voice has become so changed. His looks have changed , but he is still a unique, wonderful actor. One of the very best, I hope for the future he will get even better roles........like this one.............in Angel Heart..........even he gets bored with just the he-man type stuff.........it's not enough of a stretch for him, he has WAY more to offer than all these later Marvel type stuff............or heavy crim type roles..........that miss the sensitivity of the man. At least the Wrestler and Domino got to show that. Personally I thought he was fantastic as Stanley White in Year Of The Dragon...........it was a great movie. The fact that Hollywood ignored it, is shame on them. Let's face it, they ignored even Steven Spielberg for a long while too........

I’m not in the film business but a fan of Micky’s work. This may be the only interview that I hear his opinion of 9 1/2 weeks. Him wanting to keep the scenes true to the novel is fascinating. He paused when asked about his interactions with Kim Basinger which I find very curious. I read that the director intentionally kept them separated off set to maintain the authenticity of the tension (sexual perhaps) between them. Great interview and thank you for sharing that with us.

thank you sir. I'm watching year of the dragon and find it a classic crime movie compared to other more popular ones. Jon Lone and Mickey Rourke are a joy to watch in this movie.

@@johnhanrahansmoviestarintervie thank you very much! Adrian Lyne said Mickey would be bigger than Dean had he died after Angel Heart. Interesting that you got to chat with him when you did. Mickey reminds me a bit of Errol Flynn in some ways. Stephen Chambers wrote an interesting article on Mickey that you might like over at a site named Sundae.

Hi Starfighter. I found him open, polite and easy to chat to. He had some strong opinions about directors he'd worked with and was clearly open to learning about his craft and how different directors approach film making, story telling and character presentation. He went through a tough time in the 90's. Probably shouldn't have gone back to testing himself in the boxing ring. It damaged him physically and in other ways. But he seems to have go through the really tough times today. Cheers, John.

It's obvious John that you are still a fan of Mickey's.........and it seems once a fan...........always a fan. He just has that sort of charisma and honesty about him.

I think his films with michael cimino were a net negative for his film career and maybe even personal life. I dont think those were good movies and I dont particularly like his acting in them and it seemed like later he was trying to emulate those tough guys in his real life and they were not good healthy people. Like the whole boxing thing was so misguided and apparently he did a bunch of fixed matches so he wasn't even doing it for real.
