I love the deeper meanings of this animation, the characters were never Disney characters at all. It was all the result of the broken mind of a war veteran who had to live with a horrible mistake he made. His slow and steady fall into madness caused his sense of self and reality to blend with so many things he had seen before until he couldn’t tell the difference between the reality he’s trapped in and the fiction he watched as a kid. It was all a blur, a blur that only gained clarity when he realized and accepted his mistake and the way it affected everyone and himself
@greyshadow37 Жыл бұрын
I was thinking exactly the same and was about to comment about it until I saw your post. Yes, the protagonist's mind is so broken he is replacing them with his childhood shows. It's sad. Tragic. And this just only shows the masterfully crafted work of art which is this video. and its prequel.

We shouldn't forget about the shot with the needle shown during the part where we can hear his 'interrogation' by (probably) the CIA. This has got to be the most meaningful and deep 17 minute video of my life. The way the film displays PTSD and the effects of war are amazing. Being able to see all the characters interact with each other after what Mickey has done to Goofy is phenomenal. Please keep making more films like this, it is an eye opening experience with the writers and VAs make it sound and feel in the moment.

@@dickrichard626 I think this is just a classic case of people being different, having different views and conotations for quite literally everything. What is profound to one person is mundane to the next. As for the animation, I don't care about the work put into it. Everything we do only matters as much as its consequences, and the consequences of animating this video are a neat psychological story in my eyes. Still more work than some of the videos in my feed. Damn I need to get off of youtube.
@DanielPlaceholder Жыл бұрын
@dickrichard626 You make a good point. There are some videos I love and some that I hate. I wish the youtube algorithm would change to get rid of stupid youtube videos like those cringe and childish animated SCP videos. I hate those, but at the same time, I enjoy youtube videos from dj Peach Cobbler because of the ideas he talks about. You might think that he is cringe, and I can not in good faith say that you are wrong. But presumably, people still enjoy this cringe induced content, and we should present our case, but also be prepared for people to reject it. One day, maybe people will understand how to make a world without cringe, but until that day comes, we will endure the chaos of creation. (Edit: i just realized I failed to address your main point. I will correct this in the morning.)

@@dickrichard626what? Because it's an animation made by one person, not your normal animation made by 4/8 animators, it's an individual work, and the whole point of this being lazily made makes no sense... did you even watch another video on his channel? This guy profundizes on weird and surreal art, which means he's not interested in money, and genuinely makes things to improve his all-kinds of art (which goes from 2D, 2D with 3D-like features, 3D, you get it) Also... uhhh... what? You dont like new stuff because it's easier to make? What are you? An anti-technologist? Why would you not like things being easier? Although... i do get your point on things requiring less effort... but you still have to appreciate that art is becoming available to more people because of this. But like... This is completely hand made and doesnt use any CGI, voices are recorded and tested and music is produced by the creators. Although i dont know what you mean with this not making sense or not getting things straight since multiple war veterans or conscripts have visited the channel and OST, reporting that they took the story seriously and understood it. BUT, again, this means that this is content of a genre, implying that some people will love it and others despise it. Last drispoval of your point. How. How the hell is this for kids. It is very clear that this animation did not find it's correct public, and the posibility is that kids were attracted to this animation, somehow werent noticed by their patents, and did not get what it was about. I love how mick’s insanity is explained by the use of characters, you can see moments of sanity in the glitches. This isn’t a story of Disney characters in Vietnam, it’s the story of a Vietnam vet turned detective that copes with what he saw and did by imagining his friends, family and himself as Disney characters. It’s the only way he can remember, as you can clearly see the military wiped (or tried to) his memory, leaving only his childhood for reference. Ww2, when the US were populace were still refusing to intervene, deport Jewish refugee back to Nazi Germany, when Bush grandfather is running concentration camps and profit off it and the "Americans race and silver shirt wholeheartedly support our great Aryan friends beyond the sea". That's what war propaganda suppose to be, an necessary tool to awaken whatever left of humanity in an evil country to take back controls and make it do the right thing. It was then morphed into a monstrosity that's modern day war propaganda. Oh do i pity the fools, we all men think they were smart until they listened to one of those. "Vietnam is democratic country, what are we to instil an dictatorship and refusing their right for liberty?" "There is no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq" "Everyone connected to 9/11 is an Saudi, they publicly funded everything and we invade Afghanistan" "Libya is the most prosperous, stable country in the regions, why did we funded the extremists" "The Syrians were fighting themselves, we pretended to care and let the Turks slaughtered them all" But i hear no one sayings those thing when the war started, for we all obey the machine, "Patriotic, brave, fair... The timeline in this video was a little confusing because of a lack of context. But Goofy's headstone made it clear that he was 34 to 35 years old when he died, and was an NCO to boot, most likely an E7 (Staff Sergeant). The ending scene shows the three of them visiting the old church when they were younger, probably on the verge of being deployed to Korea in 1951-52, or meeting each other while on leave. The three of them survived that war, and were either active duty or in the reserves subsequently. At one point they passed the Ranger course and got their tabs. -All of them appear to be Irish Catholics, born and raised in a nameless working class East Coast city. -The church wasn't completely abandoned, but was still retained by the Parish for unknown reasons, as it still had running electricity. -Mickey and Gabriel "Goofy" Gibson were both US Army sergeants. But Donald was a Warrant Officer, because he was a helicopter pilot. -Max was born in 1952-53, and was approximately 14 to 15 years old when his father died. He was probably pushing 30 when he kidnapped Donald. -The base they were sent to raid was a CIA operations station that had to be abandoned because of NVA activity. Army Rangers were sent in after the spooks abandoned the facility to "sanitize" it, literally burning the buildings to the ground and destroying all sensitive material that the Rangers couldn't carry with them. Goofy was given a specific list of documents to be recovered, and he had strict orders to disregard and burn everything else. And Mickey had similar orders, including shoot-to-kill orders to ensure the mission was successful. -Mickey grew up under an alcoholic father and a weak willed mother. His father seems to have been a volatile drunk of an unpredictable nature, and probably couldn't hold a job. The Army gave all three an escape from hardscrabble lives, but it was especially meaningful for Mickey because it gave his life both order and meaning. He was emotionally scarred, however, and had a violent temper of his own. But was still very self aware, albeit in a self-pitying way. His psychosis was a result of both a violent childhood and the punitive (and drug laced) interrogation he was subjected to by his superiors after the mission. Brainwashing is the wrong term so much as restrictive conditioning. -Paternal considerations are what drove Goofy to disregard his orders. All three men were a generation older than the typical draftees they were leading, old enough to be their fathers. Even before this mission Goofy had come to the conclusion that the war was a futile sacrifice of the young, and thought that Mickey had similar doubts. -Both Goofy and Max harbored death wishes. Both willingly accepted death at Mickey's hands.

one thing i really love about the scene where mickey confronts goofy's ghost is how it reflects the scene from macbeth where he confronts banquo's ghost - sitting in his seat, silently, his hands covered in his own blood, not speaking a single word while macbeth goes back and forth between convincing himself of the impossibility of the situation, and quickly getting more and more stressed. i think it does wonders for portraying mickey's character - a man who once had ambition, who once sought for the glory of his country, now broken and living with the guilt of his actions; forced to look into the eyes of those who have been destroyed by his own hand, and the ghost of the best friend he killed. his hands, covered in blood, silently glaring at his killer while he slowly breaks down in the face of silence. the parallels between the scenes make it all the more powerful, and make this piece of art something even greater. i adore this video man LOL

“But Donald, he was innocent.” So was Goofy and Donald’s nephews. What I find so intriguing about this series is that as a Vietnam War piece, it’s so good. Mickey as the villain is nicely done because I believe it that when a soldier has gone through so much that they would do anything to keep a war going on to escape reality until it ends. Mickey’s choice to kill Goofy to keep the war going is done so hauntingly well. But that twist at the end with the realization that it’s just a human imagining himself as the Disney characters as a way to cope with it is so good that not even I would ever think to do that without complex thinking. I’d love to see more darker takes on Disney characters like this. Well done my guy, well done.

So Aside this series- it was for a longass time a headcannon of mine that Mikey was a soldier before he becme a detective (i mean about new comics, I know that Disney made propaganda movies)
@draghicivlad24443 жыл бұрын
I think the whole disney characters thing wasn't about coping, You can see in the flashes that he was tied up in front of a screen while being injected with something. I think what happened is that "Micky" was brainwashed by the american government which messed his perception of reality to the point he couldn't tell reality from fiction in an attempt to make sure that he won't talk about what happened in Vietnam
@AveSicarius3 жыл бұрын
Mickey was also programmed by the CIA, as you see hinted in his flashbacks, he experienced a forced transformation into what he became during the war, and he was clearly suggestible beforehand. He was brainwashed indirectly by propaganda, and directly through some unknown process. Mickey was, in many ways, a victim of the real players behind the war, he might not be innocent, and innocence is relative, but he was pushed until a breaking point by people who cared nothing for his existence, only that he kill for them without question. I think the most striking point of the whole thing is that situations like this did actually occur during the Vietnam War. Mind control and brainwashing experimentation are recorded events that took place during the war under CIA authority. Soldiers were involved in this, conscripted or otherwise, in an attempt to make a "super-soldier", i.e. a highly trained killer who could not disobey orders and had little remorse over their actions. These experiments did actually produce results, not as intended, but suggestion and programming can definitely make people act in a controlled manner. It's a similar process to what many cults or intensive religious groups use to control their followers. The question is, if Mickey was not in complete control of his actions, is he really guilty? Is he the villain? Or is the villain the faceless authority behind him, with Mickey being yet another victim of a shadowed authority?

I just realized something after watching it again months later - during the MK Ultra styled scene where Mickey is responding to the voice, I don't know how but I completely missed the line where the voice asks 'did you destroy the documents' and Mickey replies 'Yes', which was a lie. Max found those documents in Mickey's house which means Mickey lied during the indoctrination process. This makes it so much fucking worse. Even after making the choice to kill his best friend over the files, he never actually destroyed them as he was supposed to. The entire insertion mission actually makes sense to a degree now - they were sent in to confirm that the Dossier was the original copy that was some how stolen by Viet-cong Intelligence and spies. When the US command structure found out, they tracked down the likely location of the documents and sent a small elite insertion team to confirm the location of the documents so that they could call an indiscriminate Air Strike on that location. They were acting as ground spotters, in a way. The purpose of the strike was covered as an EVAC, there for the only ones who truly knew what was supposed to be burned up in the likley napalm strike would've been Mickey's handlers and himself - Goofy and Donald clearly didn't know until they saw the documents themselves. Mickey had Goofy grab the documents with the intent of destroying them himself or perhaps, he'd always planned to keep the documents as a nagging reminder of his moral consciousness begging him to do what Goofy himself says should be done. But he never does it. In the final scene in the church, Mickey calls Goofy a coward for his opinions of the war and the drafting. Max calls Mickey a coward when he just leaves him behind - coming full circle that Mickey is in fact a true Coward - he chose to kill his friend over the moral obligation and even when his instinct told him to not destroy the evidence of the Governments crimes, he still merely kept them in his house, never ending the War. He could've redeemed himself, even after killing his best friend. But he never did. He's a coward. Max was right.
@cossaizy63092 жыл бұрын
Small correction, Micky called Donald a coward, who was anti war. Goofy never voiced his opinions, was just trying to chit chat to break the news of his unborn son. I think Micky never destroyed the files as a form of self harm over his guilt, to remind himself and subconsciously hoping someone would find them and destroy the lie he was built because he's too cowardly to confront himself, instead wallowing in self pity and depression every day over it
@fdslk12 жыл бұрын
@@cossaizy6309 I think you're right, considering the final call of Max by calling Mickey a coward.
@Nurhaal2 жыл бұрын
@@cossaizy6309 I'm not sure if it's so much as Self Guilt, as it is fear, cowardice. He barely pulled the trigger vs Goofy, but when it came time to fulfill his commitment to his country, he failed to do that as well. He failed to destroy the documents 'like a good soldier' and he also failed to leak them, letting the war continue. All for what? So he could fight for something he now knew was a lie? Think about it. He knew the full nature of the war now and due to his cowardice, he couldn't commit to either his humanity nor his duty, he failed to achieve either for his soul. He's nothing. Cold. Dead. Without feeling. The last kill he took that meant anything to him was his best friend. He then chose to stay in a war as a husk - killing others for pure sustenance. For the sake of breathing. Going 'through the motions'. This realization is why Donald suddenly does a 180 and kills himself. It's not that the mission itself was to cover up the truth, but the fact that Mickey took all that power himself and literally made Donald apart of it all - he retained those same documents, thus Mickey purposely chose to let Donalds' nephews die over something he could have stopped. Pure cowardice. Gross, disgusting levels of cowardice. Pretty realistic actually. LOL
