Yep, goose was good and your video made an excellent second dessert (after apple pie with vanilla ice cream). Those naughty mosfets, just when you think it might be another capacitor. Lower voltage on the power rail was obvious clue, where else can voltage disappear than over input mosfet? Any other thing that could be the reason for the 10V drop across the mosfet input protection would also mean that 100-150A of current going somewhere and there is no way you would miss something like that, not only with the eyes but probably with the nose too :)

Yes 😂😂Modern LED's need a lot more to make them work. The 18V has to be boosted and current controlled, also the temperature is monitored to prevent overheating. The microcontroller also allows the brightness to be changed via PWM, and also does some of the battery management by switching it off if the power is below a certain threshold.
@Dr_Mario200718 күн бұрын
The 3.3 Volts on one of the pin on microcontroller could be for CPU power rail, so if the battery voltage sense's broken in your case, check either amplifier chip or voltage divider resistor arrays - since battery management system software portion wants to see voltage at the ADC input that it SHOULD agree with that ADC reading on the battery pack itself via built-in smart battery management system inside the pack across SPI or I2C bus communication (very rarely, Dallas / Analog Devices 1-wire communication), so it can proceed that it's within safe limit. Lithium-ion cell tend to be temperament especially when you abuse it. All that's for context. Of course there's always extra layers of safety in recent decent quality power tools, especially of brushless DC drill flavors, where there's two computers involved in handshakes and voltage readouts that they both agree with, and cut right out on low battery charge so we're not damaging the packs despite torturing the battery packs hard. Also, of course don't discount the DC-DC converters either since occasionally they have weird failure modes - diode and transistor is usually easy to check with diode settings on your DMM. Of course you can also check the driver output with any oscilloscopes you have, even a cheapo Zoyi ZT703S oscilloscope (I have it, it's almost as good as expensive HP computerized oscilloscopes as far back as 90s and 00s). Capacitors are a bit tough to check so I would recommend to have LCR meter in this case (I may have to look at getting my own at some point anyhow). If the LED driver in question pumps out 300 Volts or in case of a rather large TV, 1,000 Volts, of course you would want x100 oscilloscope probe for that so you don't fry the ADC chip, or worse, ADC on microcontroller processor die, something I also plan on doing so for my Zoyi ZT703S oscilloscope so I don't blow it (I wish there's a custom third-party firmware so I can use whatever I need easily).
@coondogtheman18 күн бұрын
Way too much electronics for just a light. What happened to just having a simple on off switch, light bulb and battery? I like how you were able to bridge those two pins on that chip to light the LEDs. Could just add a switch there and bypass it.
@BuyitFixit15 күн бұрын
LED's require a lot more to work properly than just a switch unfortunately. The LED driver regulates the current, and it may need to boost the voltage from the battery too. You could add a switch and bypass the mosfet like I did with the test meter, although you would not have any brightness control, and the other problem would be is that you could drain the battery below the voltage where the charger would not charge it. Part of the circuit disconnects the battery when the voltage gets too low to prevent damage to the battery.

@BuyitFixit16 күн бұрын
I'm not sure what the damage is like but this is what I would probably do. I'd first clean all of the board with IPA and a toothbrush, and then inspect it with a microscope / magnifier to see what tracks are affected / look bad. Then test the tracks for continuity with the test meter if they look suspect. If they have no continuity, repair with solder / fine wire, and put UV mask or nail varnish on the wires / solder.

Why so much electronics for a light ?
@BuyitFixit15 күн бұрын
Modern high power LED's need a bit of driving. They have to have the current limited to stop the from burning out and the voltage might need stepped up from the battery to drive them also. Also the temperature is monitored to stop them overheating and burning out. The microcontroller does part of the battery management (disconnects the battery at low power) but it also does the press buttons, and controls the brightness by providing a PWM signal to the LED driver. Hope that explains it 🙂
