The "rock" of The Monkees. No matter who came and went, quit or came back, Micky was always there for every iteration of the group, keeping it alive and going since 1966. His is one of the most underrated lead vocal voices of the rock and roll era. Had he sung with any other band, he would be much more highly regarded today. The Monkees got a bad rap for being a manufactured band (dubbed the "Pre-Fab Four") and it was partly true because they were formed originally not as a real band but as musician/actors PLAYING a struggling band on a TV show. It was only once the show was a hit and young fans took the lyric lines in the theme song seriously ("...So you better get ready, we'll maybe come to your town!") that the demand was there to see The Monkees live in concert. From that, a real band was born and a real band they became...playing their own instruments on record and in-concert, composing some of their own songs, and lending more than just their voices as they had mostly done on their first two albums (although Mike Nesmith did a little more with the contribution of some of his own songs and producing them in the studio). The musical legacy of The Monkees is legitimate and they have influenced generations of musicians.
