MICRO NAVIGATION | Make Your Life Harder To Make It Easier
In this video I take a day out on some of the less well known areas of North Wales to spend some time focussing on my micro-navigation skills.
I explain how making your life "navigationally harder" than it sometimes needs to be can pay dividends in the long run.

HI Craig, Practicing Nav in areas of few prominent features will keep you safe in feature rich landscapes when the weather closes in. Brilliant video. Thank you, Tony

Great exercise. Perhaps one of the hardest battles with navigation is the one in one's head. Learning micro navigation in open country with a map, will help one visualize contour lines in action. And it takes only short distances to achieve this in open country, and how mapped features relate to real world circumstances. Then when in the thick of it, with restricted visibility like a forest, one should be able to trust their map and compass, these instruments are telling the truth.

Have to say thanks again for your straight talking, no nonsense presentation. In the medium term I'll be starting training for my ML and this has cleared up my understanding of micro navigation. I am proficient at both timing and pacing and now see how I can use pacing, where appropriate along with careful bearing to really use the map to its best potential. Another fear dispelled. Excellent. :-)

Micro nav is good fun. It really gets us to practice, review and refresh our skills. Pacing - this changes all the time . Walking on a bearing- few points to fix on and over uneven ground can allow us to drift. Checking Map to ground . I often find the GPS and map don't match when I know my position. I use the GPS as a guide. It leads me back to the basics of navigation, that is why micro nav is fun. I am now old with knackered knees but still enjoy the outdoors and using these skills. Thanks Craig for the video.

Good nav advice as usual mate. When looking at minute details like this kink in the stream just bear in mind that on flatter ground watercourses can change course. Good advice as well when looking for small streams they will often be surrounded by longer grass, often stiffer and tuftier that the mounds of rough ground surrounding them. And on boggy ground where you need to ford the stream but the surrounding land is under water , often those tufts can bear enough weight for you to use them like stepping stones and can save you getting wet feet or save you unwittingly putting your ankle down an unseen hole and going over. Walking poles are particularly helpful for that too if you have mud baskets fitted.

Great stuff Craig. All the outdoor vids I see all have presenters who have all their bodily bits and pieces and all their senses and their presentation reflects a similar audience. Now imagine your presenting to a visually impaired audience. Physically fit people but who all have varying degrees of vision How would you teach navigation to them? I am being alittle disengenuous here. I am a Registered Blind person (not black blind) but who goes to the hills on his own. Believe me there are solutions to most things if you have any residual vision at all. It is a different story if your visual level is No Perception of Light. Best Wishes and continue making these challenging vids. McIntyre.

+Synapptic User Hi there and thank you for sharing your own situation and the challenges that go with that. I must admit to not having the foggiest idea as to how I would go about teaching the specific audience that you describe. Given your own experience, how would you advise teaching nav to such an audience?
