That jungle stretch reminded me of fishing the Motatapu Stream near Wanaka, a good sized brown (well good pommie fish) under a tree facing downstream in the back eddy. My friend and guide on the occasion suggested a bow and arrow cast from upstream and let it drift round and then strip gently upstream. Well it worked but when all hell let loose happened we had to think how to land it was overgrown everywhere. Eventually man's brain overcame the trout's brain and the smiles were on. Fish released. When reciting this tale to Peter Arfield at the Bakewell Flyfishing Shop he gave me some advice, firstly in German and then translated it as "never discount the possibility of success"; in other words plan ahead!

Mad skills Andy! Ten-foot rod in a narrow jungle-infested creek...wow! I suspect for many anglers this would be a no-go. Tying up some micro streamers for the fall and winter seasons. Thanks!

One of my favorite microstreamers is the thin mint. I have a couple little variations on that pattern (particularly one with no flash in the tail and an iridescent bead) that are just ultimately confidence-inspiring. I don’t even bother with the euronymphing stuff…just tightline it around little pockets with a 9’ rod and blammo…or they reject it outright and I have to pull back and regroup…but that’s another story…

I was fishing in my local river on 2nd last day of the season and the river was high. I was fishing with nymphs but as an experiment I took off one nymph and substituted a mini black woolly bugger and was pleased to catch 2 trout on the mini streamer. I will use this method more often next year. The remarkable thing about my days fishing was when I was wading up deep water at the side of the river I noticed splashing from my net and found to my surprise that two trout had swum into my net. Looking forward to more of your excellent videos. Bruce

Excellent video; informative & something I will be trying in the future. Been away from fly fishing for many years so this is something you for me. Thanks for giving us a video which is actually useful not just one of someone catching trout with minimal information on how

Great video as usual Andy. I'm a big fan of micro streamers and usually fish a size 12. I have found that a strip, strip pause retrieve works best for me. It gives the fly a chance to sink a bit between strips so it stays closer to the bottom where the fish usually are. And as you have demonstrated the fish will quite happily take a fly that's paused and not moving. Rabbit zonker strips make great micro streamers. I also tie a pattern that is basically a miniature Clouser with dyed buck tail and tiny dumbell eyes - that one is a favorite of Perch in blue/white/yellow. keep up the good work - can't wait to see a Graying video!

Great video Andy n ib like it when you fish the smaller streams it's jungle warfare. Just a question on mini streamers. What make are the tungsten beads and are hexagon shaped?
@finleyandtom3 жыл бұрын
Hi , struggling to get the UV Nymph-it that you use in a couple of the grayling fly tutorials from last year , it’s looks like Funky fly tying have stopped selling it 😞 Any suggestions for a suitable alternative? Everything i have tried is way too bulky, not great for something thats supposed to sink fast. Thanks

Where can i find these micro streamers
@FlyRiderFishing3 жыл бұрын
Can you really recommend a 10 foot rod for these conditions? Just bow-and-arrow casting this way? I have a similar tight space river and I usually go out with my 6 foot rod 😅😅 though I do a lot of dry fly fishing, but I, too, discovered small lures catch a decent amount of fish this year.
@IBandAndyFishing3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure how else I'd deliver a 5.5mm tungsten beaded fly, because you sure as heck ain't casting it with a 6' 3#! Using the B&A with a 10' rod gives me and effective B&A range of about 30' - as I reduce the length of the rod so I start to reduce my casting range with that particular cast 👍👍
@FlyRiderFishing3 жыл бұрын
@@IBandAndyFishingnever thought about it this way 🤔 but you're right about the range. I'll definitely give it a try next season. Hope I don't tangle too much, the trees around here have a tendency to grow breathtakingly fast when you're not looking 😂 most annoying 😂
@benhurn52533 жыл бұрын
Nice video 👍 but those fly rod's are pointless in those small tight streams , ul bfs 5ft rod setup with 3lb line and 1g tungsten jig head you won't look back 👍

always bring a dry fly, atleast one for that once in a blue moon that that i see a trout rising

I'm hoping to join a club with water on the dove and Derwent. What sort of patterns would you recommend be tied up that you wouldn't be without for these rivers? I'd also be interested in the recipe for these mini streamers.
@IBandAndyFishing3 жыл бұрын
Are you looking for dries and nymphs? My advice is don't over think it, your normal patterns will work just fine. The hatches are pretty similar and consistent though the dove probably gets a better BWO hatch and the derwent a few more stonefly. The micro streamers are mostly small wooly buggers - again no rocket science with these 👍
@matwatson53833 жыл бұрын
@@IBandAndyFishing both dries and nymphs. So usual hares ear, ptn etc and things like small emergers, jinglers for the top?
@IBandAndyFishing3 жыл бұрын
We don't get any March browns around here so you can probably drop the jinglers. Lots of different sized olives and elk caddis would do you. If you're after inspiration check out our trout pack 👍 www.abangling.co.uk/product/ib-andy-trout-selection-post-free/
