Much of our population struggles with issues stemming from brain imbalances. New research is finding a strong connection between our gut bacteria and our mental health. I will discuss how food impacts our gut, and has the power to either exasperate imbalances like depression, or boost our overall well being.
Lisa Kilgour, R.H.N. is a Registered Holistic Nutritionist, owner of EatMoreRealFood.com, a wellness speaker, nutrition expert, and writer based in the beautiful Okanagan Valley, BC. Specializing in digestive health and the gut/brain connection.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I avoid carbs. I eat a protein and veg based diet. I also eat a lot of unrefined oils. My brain was being starved and poisoned by a "north American" diet. I avoid starches. Even potatoes or rice. I had an inflammatory brain condition, starch makes it worse. My family are sugar addicts, I saw why my family's eating patterns were reflecting self-medicating depressed individuals. Their eating style was generationally based. I broke the pattern.

Arkadiusz Jan Dylewski Depending on activity level, a low carb diet is customized. If you have 20 or 100 grams a day to spend, decide what fits for you. Grains are high, starches like potato, sweet potato are a bit less. One de ides how to balance diversity with portion size. I like cups of greens, if I have room, a bit of potato. Giving up wheat was difficult because baguettes and croissants are yum, but I no longer care to have them and feel so much better for it. To each their own.

Great speech, I'm from north Italy (former Argentinian). Almost 4 and a half years ago I've changed my nutrition radically, It changes my life in better. It changes my mind. In few weeks I've begun to feel much more energy and to "see" the life without dark sunglasses. I've read a lot of books, picked up different usufull concepts because for the first time in my life I've understood how ignorante I've been (now I'm 57 yo). Microbiota, ph level, glucose curve during the day in blood, natural vs procees food, what each color in fruits and vegetables mean, ecc. I do not take any medicines and my health is wonderful. But one more thing to improve the microbiota I think is exercise or at least not sedentariety - not to much, just the exact amount to any of us - Thanks again. Giorgia Puentes

We all know that we have bacteria in our gut and through out the body, but I never realized it was a 9:1 ratio (9 bacteria to every 1 human cell). I also never considered how much what we eat can affect that bacteria, the bacteria affects not only our digestive system, but also our brains and the way we think. The more fruits and vegetables the more diverse the bacteria, and the better we feel. It surprised me that the connection between the gut bacteria and the brain is so strong that it can actually affect hormone levels to create either depression (a low level of neurotransmitters in the brain) or anxiety (a high level of neurotransmitters in the brain). It’s amazing that 90% of the serotonin and 50% of the dopamine in our bodies are made in our gut. If symptoms are present we can correct them by eating more starch (to decrease serotonin levels by 10%), or eat more protein (to increase serotonin levels by 35%) for breakfast. This video makes you think of what your body and consider that the food we eat alone can affect our behaviors, digestive system, and even personality. This was very informational and interesting considering how many ways what we eat has an impact on us in all aspects of our lives.

Kati K I wonder though. . . Anxiety and depression can manifest together in some psychological illnesses; and in fact, sometimes it's that very combination that can lead people to commit suicide, whereas "pure" depression may lack the impetus for someone to end his/her life. I wonder what foods she recommends for people like that?

So intriguing - about the breakfast especially. I have been doing intermittent fasting for the last several months, which has kept my weight consistent when the cheap, low-fiber starches I have been eating would have packed on pounds by now, but the first thing I did was stop eating (oatmeal) breakfast. My overall mood has shifted toward depression. Time to experiment with fasting periodically and getting back to that lovely, starchy breakfast.

Dr. Alan McDonald’s KZbin discussion on the 10 autopsies he did on MS patients finding that they all had parasites in their cerebral spinal fluid, now that blew me away. I believe that IBS has now been linked two different parasites as well. I believe we are missing the fact that we all probably have parasites and those need to be dealt with as well to have excellent gut health.

Let me tell you about my digestive system that was finally diagnosed 27 Years ago. I had to go off almost all vegetables, grain, nuts, seeds, all fruit, artificially coloured and flavoured foods, all of which I never bought. I only ever bought fresh food. Salycilates-in all vegetable matter, my gut couldn't take. So here I am now, it's been nearly forty years since the problem began and still I can just manage a couple of veggies and some nuts with my plain meat and fish diet. I'll say this though, I'm a lot healthier now than I was when the whole thing started and my doctor wouldn't listen to me. Now I'm nearly 68 years old and very happy.

@LisaKilgourNutritionist

That's true, but it doesn't mean they're a waste of time. Fermented foods are full of post-biotics, which help create a good environment for your microbiome. So, even if the bacteria die in the stomach, or very transient (leave in a day or two), they leave a wonderful environment in their wake :)

A couple supplements I have been using (one for a couple months, the other for more than a year) are quite good and anyone looking for effective fermented and/or probiotics would be well-served to try either one of these. One is fermented skate liver oil; it is like cod liver oil but apparently more potent; I started taking it partly for the omega-3s and such but also because it is supposed to be good at decalcifying the pineal gland (aka the 3rd eye). The other supplement is a combo probiotic and prebiotic in the form of chicory root inulin and a full suite of b-vitamins. I’m not claiming to be an expert on anything, I just feel like I have had positive results from a couple products.

Great question! Use the breakfast for how you're feeling that day or that moment. If you wake up feeling quite anxious, try a higher protein breakfast. But, if your mood has flipped, and you're feeling low, try a carby breakfast. If you're feeling both at the same time, go with the predominant feeling :). And, feeding your gut bacteria with these high fibre foods may also help balance out your moods :)

If a high protein breakfast is suggested for aiding in reducing anxiety symptoms but poor for depression due to the crashing, what should one start with trying if they experience both? They often come together, it's more common a person experiences anxiety and depression together from my understanding. Does anyone have any resources for treating both together through this gut biome lens? This is all new to me. Thank you!
@LisaKilgourNutritionist
@LisaKilgourNutritionist 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Krisztina! Food is only a tool in helping mental health issues, but certainly can take the edge off the symptoms sometimes :). Helping to support your gut bacteria should help with both anxiety and depression. For food - eat the breakfast to suit the symptoms you're feeling the most that day. Normally, my mood goes low, so I eat a carby breakfast. But if I'm feeling stressed or anxious about something, I have a protein breakfast. Ironically, while I was doing my last practice the morning of this TEDx talk, my tummy was rumbling with anxiety. So I ate some protein and it certainly calmed it down :). If you feel both all the time, experiment with both and see which one feels best for you :)

I forgot to mention in the talk - breakfast isn't for everyone. Thanks so much for bringing this up because there are SO many who can't eat breakfast. If it makes you nauseated or you just don't wanna eat it, that's totally okay. It's the first food you eat in the day (which might be lunch for you) that can affect you. Breakfast is NOT needed for everyone :)

@@LisaKilgourNutritionist Hmm. But the video portrays otherwise. For mental wellness all we need is healthy food: 1. Leafy greens 2. Regular exercise 3. Stress free work environment 4. Meditations 5. Company of loved ones 6. Fermented food 7. Less of food served in fast food joints and soda, ice creams 8. Nuts You don't need to wake up and gulp loads of milk, eggs or cereals. I know many who just don't do breakfast because of IF and others who eat in controlled 4-5 hours cycle.

What if you have depression and anxiety
@LisaKilgourNutritionist
@LisaKilgourNutritionist 3 жыл бұрын
Good question :). Use the breakfast for how you're feeling most that day. If you're feeling anxious, have a protein breakfast, or a starchy one if you're feeling low. And, feeding your gut bacteria can take the edges of both sides :)

@LisaKilgourNutritionist
@LisaKilgourNutritionist 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Althea, it DOES get very confusing! So many nutrition experts contradict eachother! When it comes to protein for breakfast, that's the general recommendation for people with blood sugar issues, diabetes, or anxiety. But, I've found that a protein for breakfast tends to trigger sugar cravings in those with low mood...so a high fibre starchy breakfast tends to work better. But the most important thing, is that you find the right breakfast for you. Try both out and see how you feel. Which one keeps you satisfied for at least 4 hours? Which one do you like? Your body will guide you to what's right for you :)

Can I just take probiotic pills ??
@LisaKilgourNutritionist
@LisaKilgourNutritionist 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Wynn. Probiotic pills can help a lot, but those bacteria need to be fed plant-based fiber to grow into a colony...otherwise they starve. A serving of fermented foods everyday speeds up their growth too. So, yes, take probiotics, but also add some fiber :)

@LisaKilgourNutritionist
@LisaKilgourNutritionist 4 жыл бұрын
You're right! They are :). For people dealing with high histamine, they need to be removed to get histamine down. But! They can help heal the underlying gut bacteria issue and overtime, with gut healing and dealing with specific nutrient imbalances, even people with histamine intolerance can enjoy fermented foods without a problem :)

I agree with most of the information, except for the part about natural vitamins not helping with health. One more thing when you say speak to your primary care doctor. Doctors are not looking to stop their kick back so they never give you a plan for potential not taking insulin for example. People taking the meds for diabetes the meds are what's killing their kidneys so when do you stop the medications with all the negative side effects. And how come you are still encouraging people to eat meat knowing the inflammation it cause in the body.... Does it really matter if the meat is grass-fed if the animal is pumped full of drugs and so is the soil.... The grass isn't fit to eat. We should be exposing what the manufacturing and processing of meat is doing to not only the planet but the animals, not to overlook the pollution it causes that is a trickle down effect for everything else. Let's quit with the grass fed and farm raised we know what that cruelty looks like. I have yet to hear anything about a plant based diet.... The information is OK, but just like everything else their is an agenda. We are white washing the teal issues. Which is doctors not being educated on nutrition, prescribing a pill for everything, acting as if the supplements you take need to be approved by the FDA. Without addressing that the FDA is Causing cow for pharmaceutical companies and the ones who slaughter the animals... Let's speak on the real issues please
