Thanks! I believe what you say to be very, very true. It kind of makes me wonder what people expect in life--100% accuracy on the only truth. Huh???There's often no such thing. I can't think of many things that can only be done one way. If someone wants 100% accuracy on things, they are going to be so very disappointed in life. Likely negative too. It's because so many things contribute to success like environmental conditions for example. The value, to me, is watching how people do something and bouncing off of it or building on top of it. I also believe that folks that get upset over it all cannot fathom concept and the bigger picture. It's sad. Thanks for opening up those comments. It allows me to explain why I put "how I do" in the videos.

Being someone who grows a lot of microgreens I enjoyed this video. I always like to see what everyone is trailing and doing if it's a little bit different. I used to grow peas like this just in a colander in the cupboard with paper towel. Peas can be a bit tricky sometimes with mold though,,any humidity and bam it gets them. I like to grow mine in the dark, so you get long shoots. Then expose them to light for a day, then harvest. But that's just me,,because I enjoy long crunchy sweet stems. Those Pea roots are awesome in the worm farm too. The worms just love them and turn them into wonderful castings. Looks like you have plenty to eat there Brent. Have a wonderful day Marty
@C3Voyage6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Marty! Wonderful comments mate. I think I'm going to attempt to lengthen the shoots in the dark just as you say. This type of pea was really tendrilly. Not a word, but you get the point. I'm soaking Oregon Giant now in the hopes of a sweeter product. I'm also hoping they have less tendrils. So appreciate an expert chiming in. Thanks again.

Gidday Tom. If you want them really long end tender you grow them in the dark right until a few hours before harvest. If you want a shorter fuller shoot,,grow them in very shaded spot. I do both. At the moment I just have mine in a cooler shaded position right at the bottom of my grow shelf and I get a few harvests from each lot. Hope that helps Marty

For the roots, vegetable stock and blending in a soup are things I'm considering right now. I've not gotten into juicing, but I really like the concept of it. I mean, it's 3/4 lb of nutrition and 1/3 of the whole product. Totally edible raw. A tad fibrous, but taste like a very mild pea shoot.

Sounds like too long of a soak, that will cause fermentation and endospore germination. That smell happens when I soak for too long. I do 8 hours or over night. If the water isn't changed it develops bubbles/smell that can be pleasant but usually more sour.

Hi I was surprised to see this work with no substrate at all. I've grown pea shoots myself in a dish on paper towels. I cut them off above the root when I wanted to eat some, but as the cat took an interest, I gave her the rest, and noticed that the part I'd cut off grew back! I think now if I had given them hydroponic nutrient fluid instead of straight water, I would have gotten more than 1 regrow out of it. I've tried sunflower sprouts before, and I like the taste better, but the regrowing is a really nice trait in peas.

@C3Voyage3 жыл бұрын
Over the last few years, I tried to make use of roots cooked in many ways. I found two plausible uses. One is to use them as part of a cooking stock--boil to create a broth that's added to other dishes. Another is to dehydrate them and grind similar to the way ground pepper is made. They can then be added to anything. I've added them to a multi-micro blend that I can shake onto anything. The problem with them by themselves is how stringy and tough they are. These days, I don't use them. They're composted.

Micro greens are usually harvested between the 1st & 2nd adult leaves showing up, larger they grow after the 2nd leaf appeared the tougher they are. Thanks ,Shalom!
@C3Voyage6 жыл бұрын
Understand your thoughts. Some say that microgreens are plants grown to the cotyledon stage and harvested before first true leaves appear. Others say that after the first true leaves, it's technically "baby leaf" greens. Even others say that peas and corn are not technically microgreens, but rather shoots because they don't have cotyledons. Semantics to me. I think it just means baby plants and definitive lines in the sand really don't mean much. I actually respect all opinions, including yours of course, 'cause it doesn't really matter to me what it's all called. For my channel though, it's easier just to lump this style of growing into "microgreens". To your biggest point, yes, the larger most of the plants, the tougher they get. Peas are definitely true, but you can cut the tops off and they're tender or you can grow them without light, like in another one of my videos, and they're tender. Sorry for the book. I've been up with insomnia for a while and I tend to rattle on when that happens.

Lol. I'm laughing because costs involved in this video may surprise you. Still, costs are all relative aren't they? So, let me answer what this grow has meant to me. First, it's a hobby. Cheaper than golf and very engaging for me. So very enjoyable. Second, it became the groundwork for my book. Won't go into what the book has earned. Even after that, I now grow 5lb pea grows from lessons that begun here in the beginning. There's a couple those heavy grows of mine if you want to search the channel. If I sold a 5-lb grow at $1 an ounce, that's what $80? I don't think I've seen anyone growing in any style that can grow harvest weights like I do. Lessons learned and improvements made. The interactions and priceless communication with folks who have thanked me is immeasurable. But, if I boil it down to this specific video, and the efforts that led to it (costs/time), I'd have to say it's done pretty well. I've literally earned over $200 on it from KZbin (Google Ads and such). I just checked. I don't take offense to your question. I honestly don't and I hope you're not offended by my response. That's why I was laughing in the beginning. It's meant so much more to me than you can imagine.

I tried "Pea Tendrils" as depicted in a Tempe, Arizona Chinese Restaurant menu: "Hong Kong..." I was curious... Never had them before and could not imagine the taste at all... When they were brought to the table, on a white plate, I saw these 8" to 10" long and somewhat skinny green stems had been quickly stir fried and some whisper of a dark sauce, barely dressing them... It was only Soy Sauce on top and, after tasting them in a bunch, I realized that I had just had one of the most deliciously crunchy and fresh veggie bites ever...!!! I recommend growing these for their tenderness and sweet delightful taste...!!!

This is great! Love this video. Curious, though, about whether the process of cutting the roots from the bottom was necessary, when you might have just taken the scissors and cut the shoots from the top. Also: you might not need 1-1/2 pounds of pea shoots all at once. You could cut as much as you want to use on a given day, and have the rest green & fresh for the following days. They sure look yummy!
@C3Voyage6 жыл бұрын
Hey Ed! You are absolutely right. I could put the whole thing in the fridge and it would keep for weeks. I cut the roots initially so I could pull the shoots out and get closer to the roots when cutting. IOW, the tray is 2" tall so I thought I could get that 2" of shoot. I would have to get the roots off in cleanup anyway. I'm working on what I call "personal use" micros or smaller batches. Sunnies are my favorite. :O)

You got a good harvest out of those. Are you using a little bleach in your soak? Will kill spores causing the mold. And the big question is, how do the pea sprouts taste?
@C3Voyage6 жыл бұрын
I think it's pretty good too. It was very dense. I don't bleach the peas at all, but you'll see in the upcoming Sunflower Grow video that I do. The pea shoots taste like peas. Lol. It's a generic pea and next grow will be a different pea. A sugar pea. Going to start that here in an hour or so.
@chesterlee65082 жыл бұрын
Why would you soak any seed before planting, ? just a comment. No judgement.
@C3Voyage2 жыл бұрын
With hydro-micros, it's not really "planting", but simulating it. Liquid/moisture must penetrate the seed to start germination. Soil does this in an even manner more-or-less because it wicks water evenly throughout the soil. Without soil, and with microgreens being a very short-lived grow, seed soaking ensures the germination process starts which is the most critical part of micros. Without soaking, the germination would be uneven at best. An uneven germination results in a poor or lost harvest for micros. Even in soil and traditional gardening, soaking is beneficial to ensure even germination in some crops like okra for example.

Awesome vid tutorial! Do you think it would grow back for continuous crops if you trimmed some of the greens so that it will grow back again instead of dumping the roots and seeds?
@C3Voyage6 жыл бұрын
Yes, some, but not anything like first cut. Root systems get bigger and more potential for disease as plants get older. Most seem to prefer to replant.

It was Todd's Seeds. All the others I ordered--radish, broccoli, and kale--germinated great. I don't know what happened. I know the order was held up in shipping during freezing weather. That could have been it. They sent me another brand of pea and I've started those. So, I'd hate to say from one purchase that they're not a good company or had a bad batch due to the reasons mentioned. All the best!

have you had any trouble with your hydroponic microgreens smelling like stagnant water? I know some of them smell like a fart like broccoli or cabbage. My radish smells like a fart any suggestions? I rinse the crap out of them too. to the point my lady keeps telling me to leave them (microgreens)alone.
@C3Voyage6 жыл бұрын
Legumes used to smell for me when I first started. That's the peas and beans. Radish, never, but I was rinsing daily by then. Since I went to no-medium and rinsed daily like you see in my later videos, not any longer. Well, an occasional small bit when legumes are new. It goes away after the rinse. I also use the anitfungal and that might help with smell, but I'm not sure. All others have never smelled, but I also have never left water sitting in the lower tray either. If you're using any kind of medium, whether it's soil or felt etc, that might be harder to rinse the smell out. I'm guessing here. Willing to chat back and forth on this if you like to see if I can help you figure it out.

Hydroponic Gardening & More with Brent I use the Coco coir mats and I keep water off them(Rambo Radish, peas, and sunflower). I have been inspired by what you do without a medium and planted my first sunflower crop without medium last night. I preferred to not use a medium from the beginning of this microgreens journey but it was like sacreligous so I didn't do it. I'm going to try a no medium with peas and I do wheatgrass without it already. I'm going to try a no medium Rambo Radish tonight to see if that gets rid of the smell. Thank you for the knowledge, keep up the great videos. I'm a huge fan.
@C3Voyage6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words Marble. I've never grown in anything other than paper towels. I quickly learned I didn't like that so I looked for a mesh type tray. I assumed it would work without media based off of my hydro experience/trials. I never wanted to use soil, coco, or mats cause I just didn't want to pay for it honestly. The feedback I initially got from a few was "you can't" or "you shouldn't" along with some expertise on why. I also asked others "why?" in a couple videos. There is a lot of value in being an expert on things or being top dog on things. That is a block to learning in my eyes, but it is a form of celebrity/fame for some. Like you said, sacrilegious. I understand it. It's human nature, but I'm not built like that. I have always tested the boundaries of stuff. I learned young that some people do stuff cause others do stuff and for no other reason. I fail a lot, but sometimes I find some good stuff to share. I wish you the very best. I hope you master it, build on it, and make a ton of money.

I think the peas seed on the bottom become the medium for the top seed, that's why they break down. the root mass would be great for livestock. no medium would depend on cost of seed vs medium, and speed of growth, for me it's about 12 days.
@C3Voyage6 жыл бұрын
John, you certainly have the setup to trial it side-by-side if you wanted. I'd surely watch that video! Keep in mind that my seed is not stacked. They're side-by-side on 1 level....mostly. Same amount of seed I see others using in soil, about 300 grams. It's less than Curtis Stone uses: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nqfMd5Z9jLZ3eLcm23s He inspired the quantities of most of what I do. I certainly do not want to use seed as a medium. No medium is key for me.

I've watched other videos on growing Pea Shouts and a few of those folks talk about "Cut-n-Re-grow" again. Have you ever tried doing this? If so, which micro greens will re-grow after the first harvest?
@C3Voyage6 жыл бұрын
Peas are different than most others and most consider them shoots vs microgreens although they "fit" into the microgreen category. Most microgreens have starter leaves called cotyledons that first grow. After that, the first "true" leaves grow. If you cut below the cotyledon leaves, the plant will die because all that's left is a stem. New growth can only grow from the junction of a leaf and stem if the top is cut off and that doesn't always happen with young plants due to shock. Peas can grow back if you cut after the first leaflet, but not always and not as aggressively as the apical tip. Also, when you cut and re-grow peas, you are attempting to maintain and older plant structure which has more roots and more chance for issues to develop. To me, it's not worth it when I can rotate two trays constantly starting new grows. Plants that are grown past the microgreen stage into baby leaf or older are candidates for what's known as cut-n-come-again. In this case, you can take older, outer leaves and let the center apical leaves grow larger if that's an interest. Things like lettuce, chard, kale, napa cabbage, and other greens. As far as I know, to specifically answer your question, peas and corn are sometimes re-grown. Just my opinions, of course, from an inexperienced microgreens grower.

Pepe, do not let them do that to you mate. Share exactly how you do things always. You would be shorting people who follow you of the important parts of the things you do. You can't inspire if you hold back and you're obviously successful. Forget the pinned so-called MG experts. Rise up and lead boldly. You have a great channel. That's my hopes for you. At my channel, don't apologize. No political correctness here. Also, don't feel bad if you monetize. I'm at 5000 subs and there's no money-driving motivations for me; however, it does give me about $75 to $150 ($60 now by the way) to help buy things. There's nothing wrong with monetizing. 99% do and you can get an extension for your browser called "heartbeat" I think it's called and it'll show you all who do it. Of course, if it goes against your sensibilities, then by all means stay true to your beliefs. But, to me, if you put out great content for other's enjoyment, you deserve what goes along with it. Capitalism. Glad to have you as a friend.
