My super long thoughts! 1. Microlocs are the form of locs that have the highest maintenance and expense. I see so many people that dread their retie or say they will NEVER retie as long as they have a consultant. If the thought of doing your hair/retie makes you have a panic attack or mental breakdown, it's not low maintenance lol. Also, every person I've seen that combined or combed out or cut off their micro/sisterlocs mentioned the maintenance. Something to seriously be considered. I cringe a little when someone mentions how they can't wait to get locs because of the "hair freedom" and say they're getting micros. I think people should consider small traditional locs or a larger form of microlocs more often (look up Rebekah Elaine, Chescalocs, and Napsarethenewblack). Nothing wrong with micros, but I appreciate the honesty of the work it takes. 2. There are two types of people that have locs. Locs are really trendy right now, so for a lot of people it's just a hairstyle. But there are other people that get locs as a spiritual or deeper journey. Their hair looking aesthetically pleasing to everybody else isn't the goal or important for them. I feel like there's a disconnect between those two groups because we're all in the loc community but for very different reasons. I think that's another reason that the "ugly phase" term is so controversial. I call it the awkward phase :) 3. I combed out a set of mature 5+ year old locs. I did have to cut quite a few inches off. You can go back to loose hair from locs but it's a hell of a process! I see a ton of people who say they want to get locs as a protective style for a few years and then comb them out to retain length. I always think "Whyyyyyyy??" Why would you purposefully spend years matting up your whole head knowing that you don't want to keep the style? Just get braids or crochets for real! I'm trying to save you. I don't know if I could comb out another set of locs especially because I have micros now. Love these videos discussing microlocs!

Im not locd but from all the videos Ive seen I agree micro locs do NOT seem like hair freedom to me due to the money and time required on a regular basis. I would dread the reties. Great video.

Hi Tanielle! I agree with your points 100%. Microlocs may simplify your haircare routine, but I don't buy into "hair freedom". You will have to invest your time and/or money into maintaining my sisterlocks. I also believe the starter phase is not cute, but it's temporary and time really flies! The image at 10:25...I howled! 😂

Well THANK YOU for telling the truth! I know that we like to keep things positive and all that, but I believe in giving people ALL the information they need when embarking on a new journey, project, etc. They need to know as mush as possible, so they will have realistic expectations, and not be blindsided by the rainbows and butterflies that some people will have them feed into. There, I said it! Great video!
