Micromanagers have a negative impact on employees, especially on employee motivation. If you tell employees exactly what they have to do and if you check their work down to the very last detail, that's called micromanagement.
The problem is: If you do this, you demotivate your employees and they will lose the fun at work.
Don’t get me wrong: It’s ok to control results, but it’s not ok to specify and control every tiny little step towards the results.
If you don’t give your employees at least some freedom to find their own way to get the result, then this is highly demotivating and frustrating.
Do you want to know if you have a tendency to micromanage? In this video I ask 7 questions.
The more of them you answer with „YES“, the more you and your team probably suffer from you being a micromanager.
If you want to know how to avoid micromanagement, then check this video:
• Micromanager - 5 tips ...

Very true video :) Basically a micromanager should start to have a life outside the office... I believe its company responsibility give a direction to managers in terms of workplace culture, otherwise micromanagers are free to behave like that with no one speak up. Unfortunately some organisations look micromanagers as very efficient and productive employees...

I have a micromanager who belittles you when he has an audience and is in love with the blame game but will pass the buck when it's himself. Apparently my 14 years experience at the company doesn't mean anything in his eyes. I cant stand hypocrites. I take pride in my work and I am confident in my ability to find efficient solutions to work tasks. This man takes it as a threat to his integrity, rather then working together as a team.

It's like the saying "the bigger the truck the smaller the peepee". What I find amusing is the ones who start their new supervisor/manager roll, then believe they have obtained a position of authority over you that they can belittle you. No no hun. I simply say to those who abuse their position is: "all you get is a slightly high pay than me with more stress and headaches, which you signed up for not me you can't handle it then step down and let someone with real leadership skills take over, because at the end of all this you're just as dispensable as me, there's always going to be someone for everyone to take on their role".

Used to work in a small company. My manager need to ‘approve’ every single email to external people. We send to her, she OK-ed, we send it. When client replied, we need to wait for her to send/skyped us the reply which we copy paste into the client reply. Even an OK reply need to wait for her. That was 10 years ago, and if it didn’t happend to me personally, I would not ever believed it if someone told me.

well; looks like everybody here is complaining about micromanagers; so I'd rather micromanage some employees for a short period of time rather than fire them. Also micromanagement is very efficient for newly hired collaborators without previous experience in the field so they can learn about details. and of course when employees understand the system and the philosophy they can act on their own.

Only if your boss trusts in your ability and your willingness to do the right things, he or she will reduce control. I'm starting to struggle with this myself. I'm in my first supervisory role, and the managers above me tend to be micromanagers (part of the company culture). They want to approve everything my employees do - so part of my expectations in the job role is to be a micromanager and check everything before it gets to the upper managers. :(

Yes I understand that. I had a supervisor like that who micromanage and everything had to be his way. My idea is: "point A to point B, it's not just one single path, however there are thousands of ways from A to B!!!" They just need to trust us to handle that, in our own way, as long as the we get from A to B without messing up the whole operation.

my micro manager enforces wearing of masks but is too busy to wear one herself . When a issue arises , more paperwork will fix it . If there is a problem it is the workers fault and not the 35 year old machinery . To have an encyclopedic knowledge of your machinery as an operator because the mechanics dont know the machine , even though you only filp a switch and cannot access the control panel etc. The one I like most is my ability to look through 1/4 inch steel bulkheads with my xray vision to see what is blocking the silo.

I'm a tradie working with two apprentices. Part of my job is to delegate tasks to these apprentices, but since they are apprentices, they obviously are new to my field and cannot be fully trusted like an experienced tradesman. I'm an engineering manager. I let my guys have every opportunity to fail when the cost of failure is small and easy to rectify. They have had to fix a few of their own mistakes as learning opportunities. Only on more important tasks with a high price of failure, do I check their final work. Even then, I only really focus on the details that would cause the most pain. I wonder if that approach would work with apprentices.

Wrong. I worked for a startup and experienced micromanagement on a 3 person team. It was absolutely toxic, and pushed out many great people, including myself. The issue is that these managers will NEVER be satisfied, because they cannot accept that others do things differently. Micromanagement can happen when someone is stressed, but if good employees give feedback that this is hurting the morale, they need to stop or they will lose their team.

I'd have the tendency to micromanage lazy people until they resign, cuz it's hard to fire them these days. Loads of people talk about how bad managers are like all workers are saints. True that there's loads of managers that suck, from personal experience the vast majority are hired cuz of nepotism or that's the culture of the company, being crap. But we all know loads of lazy people that aim only at getting paid while being lazy and still find reasons to complain.

Want to see how crazy my control freak boss is? We all work from home even before Covid. So they came up with virtual potlucks via MS Teams. Our manager doesn’t even let you get up and away from your desk during these virtual pot lucks. Let me remind you that we are in our own homes and she’s thinks she can tell us what to do. Pot lucks are supposed to be a food party where you are NOT AT YOUR DESK so you can take a break from work and recharge your battery. So it’s now a forced, non work related conversation that’s scheduled once a month. Its only 30 min long. It’s awkward and cringe. She will IM me and see where I’m at with my project.. “ hey jool, how far along are you? Almost done? “ 7 minutes later “‘hey Jool, where are you at now?” She will reschedule 1 on 1s five times in a day because she can’t get her shit organized due to her scatter brain. I’ve been working with her for 4 years and I don’t know a single thing about her. She doesn’t open up and get to know anyone on her team and doesn’t reveal anything about herself. All I do know is that she likes Thomas Concaid paintings, Rodeos and lighthouses. That’s some outer space alien shit that she think will help her blend in. She’s one of billions that are about to take over our planet guys. We gotta wake up before it’s too late. Help me.
