Very nice, well made, and well presented video! I appreciate you putting together such a good presentation of a very significant technique/mechanic in Melee. Fun fact, at 6:50, moves with fixed knockback can actually go from not knocking down to knocking down if defending is charging a smash attack. Hitting someone who's charging a smash attack increases knockback and hitstun by 1.2x
@cherryb0ng4 жыл бұрын

Tech chasing is one of my favorite parts of Melee, and its infrequency in the later smash games is one of the major reasons I enjoy playing them less. Glad to see some new tutorial videos coming out for all the recent Melee converts!

This is the perfect time to do an analysis series of basic concepts for new players, ideas could be “dash, roll, or spot dodge? A guide to evasion in melee” , or for those struggling with the floaties online a breakdown of how melee heat maps work and how to break bubbles with movement or maybe an idea like how to know when your “turn” is over. Great video

for my yung birdy boys: the situation at 9:33 calls for falco to do aerial, shine, sh laser pressure. this pressure sequence lets you beat shield grab with shine as well as beat roll away with a quick sh laser after shining which will lock up the opponent for a few frames after rolling back allowing you to dash grab them or safely ftilt them out of their roll. be careful because you are pretty vulnerable during the startup of the laser and they can easily beat you with a quick attack oos like shine. another thing to note is if you expect them to roll in, you can do a reverse laser instead to catch them, which is even better because if they do roll you're basically guaranteed a grab off your laser.
@Radarssbm4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I am aware that there's a lot of nuance to that scenario, I was just trying to distill it to something more simple for the sake of explanation, and show a way to punish that option more aggressively. Good additional context

Literally just have good reflexes and reaction time as well as timing. Thats essentially the gist of it.
@Radarssbm4 жыл бұрын
Not really? Positioning is arguably more important than reaction time as if you don’t have that down you literally can’t react in certain situations, and positioning is really really hard to learn. It’s hard to cover specifics but subtle stuff like where you place yourself under a platform can be the difference between something being reactable, vs only covetable with a read

missed tech roll behind is the hardest option to cover. It took me a long time to realize get up rolls are not reactable and have a shorter animation than other rolls (35 vs 40). Also somebody tell me why get up roll animation frame data varies based on being stomach side or back side. It's too much for my caveman brain.
@Radarssbm4 жыл бұрын
Those kinds of rolls are still reactable haha, but it’s true that it’s weird. Who told you they’re not?
@EthansQuest4 жыл бұрын
@@Radarssbm my b. I had a brain blip. I mixed up "unreactable" with "unreactable for certain options". I was thinking of a convo i had with Setchi 2 years ago about Falcon reaction tech chasing and whether stomp could be used to cover get up roll in. It can be used for tech roll in but not for get up roll in. I thought coverage with stomp was possible. Roll out of misstech has 35 frames. It's a 5 frame difference in animation length. jump squat is 5 frames and dair is active at frame 16 so you'd have to act 21 frames before the spacie is actionable. that'd leave you 13 frames to react. 0.21666 seconds to react which is within human reaction time. However, I recorded my success rate in an excel spreadsheet and get up roll in was significantly under-performing relative to the other consistent reaction options. I really was not able to cover the option in practice. Setchi said the following in response: "Like I explained in my video, IT'S NOT POSSIBLE ON REACTION. Roll in out of missed tech takes LESS TIME than tech roll in, so stomping it on reaction means they can shield it! This is important, and I explained it in my 20gx video on crouching. . . " Average human reaction time is "0.25"" - That doesn't apply to melee, the game has input lag and whatnot, standard time for techchasing is roughly 18/19 frames into their tech option and you definitely cannot stomp missed tech rolls on reaction, sadly." (Setchi, 2018).

@Radarssbm4 жыл бұрын
Probably because the music was a bit quieter so it was more noticeable? Honestly I'll look into solving this issue but I really don't know what I need to change... I have a pop filter and everything. Probably one of the main reasons is I unfortunately am on a medication that makes my mouth kinda dry, and I'm sure that doesn't help. I'll keep it in mind for sure, and watch some videos on how to reduce this, but for what it's worth I already try to reduce it :/
