@Greasyspleen6 жыл бұрын
Probably the greatest racing sim of all time. It was a pretty big leap from the original GP1. Todays sims have better physics but it was amazing how all the basic effects were there way back in 1995. Moving suspensions, oversteer, understeer, downforce, wheelspin, locking brakes. It even had telemetry that showed everything right down to the the suspension deflection at each wheel. Some people complained that the car would spin out in a "scripted" manner, but anyone who spent more than a few hours playing it and survived a fishtail or two or fought to keep it off the wall mid-spin knew better. And as somebody below noted, the AI were better than most new sims. It was far ahead of its time.

This easily the best,most realistic F1 simulation till todays day. Car handling,setup,and especially-the TELEMETRY. I have never played a sim that has so detailed telemetry data. So many parameters. The best thing is you can overlay the graphicon of a,let's say 1.26.487 lap with the graph of a1.26.924 lap. Circuit map shows you which part of the track the car is on and you can zoom and compare entry,apex,exit and acceleration of that lap with the one of a different lap. That way you can see where you did good or bad,where you can brake later or sooner in order to understand how to improve. For me,having that in a realistic sim is a REAL simulation. GT,for example,lacks the telemetry to be absolutely on top. Gp2 is awesome,from the era when cars looked and performed just right. Mclaren Peugeot with Hakkinen and Brundle,Schumacher in the Benneton,Damon Hill in Williams. Sadly that's the year Senna died,which crushed me,but the sim is perfect despite that. Dress it up with today's graphics and you have a sure winner. Oh yeah,i want a cut of it if someone makes it and makes big. Other people who like this game,please leave a comment or,like,or something so that i can know i'm not the only looney tune about REAL F1. Cheers!

Hard to believe this was 95. I played this religiously and I remember playing Monaco on a long full race. led for around 50 or so laps and made one mistake and crashed. I was gutted but at the same time had such respect for the game. For its time it was a work of art. Imagine what these guys would have done with todays tech. Back when a game was built with full pride and for the player for being what it was, a game. None of this half arsed drip fed every year crap with in game purchases.

This game was brilliant! Really quite advanced. It had incredible depth, a fantastic physics engine and very good AI. Superb graphics for the time as well! Shortly after Jacques Villeneuve entered Formula 1 in 1996 and was immediately successful (even setting pole in his very first grand prix and nearly winning that race), he was asked how he was able to learn the tracks so well and so quickly, and his response was that he was learning them on Grand Prix 2!
@mrmactknife6 жыл бұрын
I believe Villeneuve quoted "playing Sega" as his method of learning the tracks.
@tiadaid4 жыл бұрын
Quite ironic if he used GP2 to learn about the tracks, given how he never allowed them to use his likeness in Grand Prix Manager and GP3 - replacing him with a guy named John Newhouse.

I mean,i had an editor with which you could load the 1987 season and have those cars and those drivers. The cars were all based on the original GP2 car shape but it was great,specially the cars of the -4 +4 years. There were carsets (1990,1979,1984,all from 1966 to then 1998 and up to 2000 with Toyota and stuff. The point is that you could change how easy or hard cars break in a crash,set the grip level,possibility of a breakdown,i mean,i had all the carsets and single team files. Then you had to load the grooved tires for post '98 cars,or put wheels from the ie. '80s and it was awesome. But the first time i realised how realistic is the GP2 is when i hooked up a steering wheel with pedals and a gear lever. Had to shift with the buttons cause the lever didn't hook up but man... Here,i will admit it,yes i didn't have the pedals and the wheel for long but i never managed to succesfully countersteer a car without crashing. It's a go kart. It slides,you catch it,but then you have to recounter so quickly that it throws you inside. If i moved the whell to re-counter quickly enough,i would brake it. Didn't want that. THAT'S how real this sim is. From driving to choosing a helmet you downloaded from the net... Brilliant.

Gaming was great in the 90's, when simulation games were more focused on being fun and enjoyable than in needing a university degree to play. I started on the forerunner to this one: Microprose Formula One GRAND PRIX. The graphics weren't nearly as smooth, but that game gave untold hours of enjoyment. Grand Prix 2 was just that much better. The new Grand Prix games just leave me cold. Sure they are pretty, but they are just not nearly as much fun.
@charliechaz19824 жыл бұрын
Agreed, they are not as fun now. I also find that you can't really take in the graphical beauty of modern F1 games because it is all just so fast, it seemed easier on the eye and easier to look around then. My inner 10 yo self is rather jealous my household didn't upgrade from the Amiga for quite a while so only had GP1 and never got to play GP2, it looks better in every way.

As I love reading all the memories here in the comments I'd like to add mine: - I overclocked my Pentium 100 to 120 MHz, to spped up this game. To test stability of the system without having to play it that long (practically 24 hours) I let the game run races with AI drivers only. I ended up watching a whole race that way, LOL, as GP2 has a automatic TV-director-function. It ran SVGA, which everybody was blown away by, full details exept mirrors just ok, only Monaco was a too slow especially going through St. Devote. I used ELSA Winner 1000 Trio graphics card and at first 8 MB RAM, later 12 and then 16 MB. I still have that PC up and running and it's still set to 120 MHz. - half a year after getting the game I got a Thrustmaster wheel and pedals set, because this was the first GP game, where keyboard control was a drawback. - I hated, that there is no wet weather. - I hated, that they censored all the tobacco sponsorship. - I felt for the creators, that they had to deal with the problematic situation of the 1994 season, which they were going to simulate. It was hard to get the balance right between realism and gameplay (decide if Senna & Ratzenberger appear in the game, decide if the partly temporary changes of the 1994 tracks should be in the game (chicanes at Barcelona, Montreal, Spa, permanent changes to Hockenheim & Monza, Estoril). To me they decided the right way on the tracks, as they did only implement the permanent changes to the tracks). - loved the additional sounds played when cars are passing by the external cameras at high speed and the sparks from cars bottoming out. - I still played the prequel more and still do, because it's a tad more fun if you want to do some old school race sim driving without setting up a wheel & pedals, and I liked the sound a bit better and wanted some wet races. - if anybody wants to download the menu music please let me know!

I´m still playing this today on a custom built 486 system with an AMD X5-133 CPU. Fastest 80486 CPU i´ve ever seen. Overclocked to 160 MHz, i think it´s somewehere between a Pentium 90 and a Pentium 100. At least i hope so :) GP2 runs just fine on this machine. The developers did a fine job for such a high compatibility.
