Fantastic comments on here. I was the main artist on Atari, Amiga and PC, with some juniors coming in later to do things like the maps and other bits. I prefer the Amiga intro as it required more ingenuity to put it together. The PC intro was my first attempt ever at animating a 3D scene (other than flying logos)

Thank you people for making this great game! I was just a little kid when this came out, but it very well might be that without this game(and gp2) I wouldn't now be making games for a living. The editable team and driver names in this game were already a tiny nudge in the right direction for me. Awakening an urge to tinker and modify. When gp2 and the unofficial editor came about I started making my own car sets and that's where it really started for me. First modifying existing games and then finally moving on to making games of my own.

This game even had workable flag conditions and marshalls (something codemasters didn't add until about 2012) real sim damage, toggle cameras and drivers on replays to view the field, again something Codemasters didn't add until this last decade. Geoff Crammond Grand Prix was way ahead of it's time. I plugged in my old amiga and played this recently and it's still just as I remember it and brilliant to play.

The graphics may look rubbish now and the physics limited but in the early 90s this game made me feel like a real F1 driver - no F1 game since (apart from GP2 and GP3) has come close!

Geoff Crammond was a beast of a game programmer. I and the whole sim racing world with me I am sure do wish that he would just simply return just ONE time to make one last beast of a GRAND PRIX 5. A new one that will leave all other modern racing titles to chase it for another two or three decades perhaps. One thing that no other game has ever replicated, not one racing sim, is the fact that if you crashed or broke down that your car would be pushed and then hoisted up in the air for removal. This whilst a yellow flag situation was going on. I don't remember a single game doing that since.

Loved this game. Spent a whole summer playing it while listening the radio. Some might say that it was a wasted summer but I had a great time. I remember there was a card with it with the proper teams and drivers so you could enter them in. I used to have races at 100% length and I think I managed to get good enough to play it at the highest difficulty level.

I was 4-5 seconds faster than the AI at certain tracks, so I had a little rule that I'd run zero front wing and the hardest tyres. I went through every race with a spreadsheet and worked out what was needed to slow me down to give them half a chance before the start of a season. Converted my under bed wardrobe into a driving 'sim' complete with old car seat and early Atari steering yoke and pedals. Even went as far as wearing a second hand bike helmet with weights duck taped to the side for G-force effect. I was in racing heaven.

Funny thing is, I STILL remember this track. The game had a more phisical quality to it, it was like it represented an abstract minimalistic artistic vision of what objects are, and sometimes more than with modern digital art, it is pretty much a mesh of so many detail we get lost in it, whereas the world does have way more space, and objects feel different when viewed in real life, and this minimalistic aspect of driving captured the essence of what the trajectory and phisics of racing are in a more visceral way, than the sensatory explostion that are some modern detailed graphics.

Played this as a kid, this game was the real deal! Once you started playing it, you knew that most of the other "racing" games were just toys. This one had some real physics, realistic handling (at least it felt that way), all the real F1 tracks modeled accurately in the game so you could drive real lap times that were immediately comparable to what the real F1 drivers achieved on the real thing. You even tended lose the track or crash the car at the same corners and walls as in reality. I heard that Michael Schumacher used this game to familiarize himself with all the tracks. That tells you something! 😎
@automotive474
@automotive474 8 ай бұрын
You have to be fair, Papyrus Indianapolis 500 had pretty good physics, too. The driver that used this to learn tracks was Jacques Villeneuve, he had seriously good results his first year and said that "a video game" helped him learn the track layout in advance. Other drivers thought this was laughable at the time. But nobody was laughing at the end of the season, he did really well. The game is presumed to be GP2, since it was the best sim available at the time with the tracks he'd be interested in. Later, Jacques would become World Champion.

Great game. It really provided the feeling of speed. I played 2 full seasons 100% length (no aid - 100% victories saison 2). I could feel the tires slip in curves and feel about them. I was able to guess I was down 0.2 seconds on a 1'30" lap. In this game, you were constantly struggling against time, and every 0.1 second chunk could be measured.

Cω Tham Are you sure? Different was the Amiga version's sound, which came on diskettes, on PC I only know there is a difference between PC Speaker and soundcard output, although this game is one of the rare cases, where a soundcard didn't give a huge improvement in sound. In this video you can hear the soundcard output.

armorgeddon yup, very sure. But it was IBM PC compatible version, which I played. I used to have the diskette version first (about 3 disk, iirc). Later when a friend bought the CD version, I borrowed it and play. It came with plenty more animations as well, aside from the different engine tune (which was slightly higher pitched).

Memories of childhood days. :) I played a full season in 100% race length. But I kinda lost my fun with the game when i found out that AI was cheating. The AI wasn't riding at the lap times the board showed. When you lost the other drivers out of sight they were faster than the AI really could do. I followed an AI car right at it's tail for one whole lap without overtaking to find that out.
@anythingpeteives
@anythingpeteives 6 жыл бұрын
ShootaGermany You're talking about qualifying mainly of I recall. Don't know if the same thing happened during the race, but definitely during qualy they weren't as fast if you watched them. Especially when you accelerated qualy. Didn't think it was cheating at the time. Just thought crammond wasn't able to emulate everything as accurately during speeded up mode. It was an approximation, but not done as well.

Very nice capture! For the technical standard of 1992,they included a lot of details which were left out of most games of the following years (e.g every pit crew visible in the pit lane) for performance reasons, but which,IMO, are really relevant for the overall atmosphere. Sadly, screen resolutions at the time were the biggest drawback in racing games, because you could only see a curve once you were half way through it ;-) forcing the trend away from "cockpit view" to a higher 3rd person view.
