One correction to your 15:49 talk, about having to need a computer for USB cam microscopes. Most of these cameras work plug-and-play with Android devices with a usb2->type-c connector. And some microscope cameras support over wifi connection that enables every phone with wifi to use their phone to observe. Great video, appreciate your expertise and comments!

I started off buying a starter scope, which was great. But bought a Swift Stella after seeing your review of them. And it is so much better, but the starter of wasn’t cheap about £130 ., and still usable, my grandchildren can use it. But the swift is triscope, and really good with photos and videos. Don’t know what I will go for to up date Whalen time comes, will have to look when the time comes. Perhaps you will do a review of the much more expensive ones. Thanks for your channel its one I go to first if I want to find out about an aspect of microscopy.

Oliver Microbe Hunter, Your KZbin channels are like a living text book on microscopy for amateurs and engagingly presented; thank you for all the work you put on these projects. I’m now 87 years old; when I was 7-8 years old I was given a wooden microscope with an objective and eyepiece mounted on either end of a cardboard tube, a reflective mirror and a fixed wooden stage--focused by moving the cardboard tube up and down in the frame. What an intriguing world it revealed! I now have 7 great grandchildren and want to expose the two oldest to the world of microscopy. Todays basic equipment is “light years” advanced of mine of yesteryear and your channels were extremely valuable in navigating through so much available today. So now I know what to get them without overwhelming them. Yesterday I received my own Amscope D200 microscope kit 😃 with collector and mechanical stage; it’s very nice high quality piece of equipment (for $200) with all the important features. I followed a career of engineering and look forward returning to exploring the world I couldn’t see in earlier years in the ponds, lakes and water features that are available. Your KZbin channels are very important here as well.

I am using a stereo microscope to view micromount mineral specimens. There are a few that require higher magnification than others. Are there any advantages/disadvantages with increasing magnification by swapping out eyepieces vs. a Barlow lense? I use a ring light, so using Barlow lenses is kind of a nuisance. Thank you!

NO! This microscope does not have an oil immersion objective. You will destroy your objectives if you use immersion oil. You can only use immersion oil on objectives that are labelled 100x oil. If you do use immersion oil, then you will not only break your objective, but you will also not get better images.

i myself was very disappointed with 100x oil objective until i learned oblique illumination. the difference you get with oblique illumination is huge imo. so whoever is thinking of getting their first microscope alteast buy one with condenser so you can do oblique illumination.

In general: I think its better to start out fast and buy the cheepest, but at a real store (no toy store). Then when you know a lot moore you can buy a cheeper good one second hand. For lots of bang for the bucks. Then when you are basicly a pro you buy a brand new good one with warenty, then you can have the other as a backup.

How much magnifying is too much magnifying

Depends on the objective. But anything above 1000x total mag. only makes it larger and more blurry.

Anything above 1000 times the objective NA value will be empty and degraded magnification is the rule. Resolution is more important than magnification.
