Microsoft Access 2013 Tutorial Level 1 Part 06 of 12 - Entering Data, Part 1

We'll learn how to enter data into our table, edit that data, resize columns, and rearrange fields. You'll learn some rules for storing your data - such as only typing in the digits of a phone number (no dashes or parentheses). You'll see how to use the Date Picker control to select dates. You'll also see how to use the Zoom window.
Topics in Lesson 6 include: Typing sample data, CustomerID (New), Resize a column, Two-character states, Only digits in phone numbers, Percentages are fractions of 1, Date or Time or Both, ##### in a field, Date picker, mm/dd defaults to current year, Two-digit year defaults 00-29, Spacebar to check box, Horizontal scroll bar, SHIFT-F2 to open Zoom window, Switching back to Design View

This lesson was great. The only thing I couldn't do is to extend the notes with Shift F2. Not sure why but it didn't work for me - maybe because my tab was not extended but great job - slowly by listening one lessons at the time, everything makes sense.

Nice video, i do have one comment: You advise your viewers to leave the field 'Country' blank when it has the same value most of the time. However i would advise others to enter a 'Default Value' at a field in a case like this (Data type > General > Default Value). What's your thought on this?

That's fine too. Whatever works for you. My thought is that if 90% of your customers are in the United States, and you're in the United States, and your mail doesn't need to print "United States" on it, then there's really no reason to have to default that field and take up all that extra space for needless data. But that's just my opinion. Yours is certainly valid too.

Hi Rick, I am trying to make a database with an item number starting at 1000000. I was going to try to have a field that starts with that number and then adds 1 to it at each row. The other issue I have is that I want to be able to print a barcode label of that number along with the number under it, and also the other fields in that row. I was going to make a userform to enter all of the information and when it enters it into the database it will print a 4" x 4" label with the information. Thank you I love your videos.

Thanks for the course I live in the UK and never use access before but I think is a good too instead of using so many spreadsheets. I am also interested if you can perform financial values or pivot tables with it can you import excel data and copy and paste on the field. are the data on Acces easy exported into excel ? when typing in the discount rate field the value turns to be 0. i have checked the formatting from the previouis video. it is "NUMBER". i type 0.5 or 50% and after enter (or tab) the value jumps to zero. why is that?

Likely your number is set as Long Integer. Change it to double.
