The CEO of Larian (publisher of bg3) said the exact same thing. Western developers have a serious problem of executives and CEO's only caring about the stock price (as the culture in the west wants this.) So CEO's fire all their devs to get better stock prices for the next year, but then it starts tanking years later. Happening to ubisoft right now, will happen to xbox very soon

@50Personas4 ай бұрын
I actually have a somewhat different take on this: this was a mercy killing, as Bethesda/MS actually did (some of) these studios dirty way, way before now. Let me explain: Tango Networks: yes, Hi-Fi Rush was highly praised and it IS awesome. But everything indicates it didn't sell well, which also doesn't surprise me (Xbox exclusive until very recently, cartoonish, rhythm-based, fast-paced action - all anathema to the modern normie gamer). It was shadow-dropped, meaning it had zero marketing and hype leading up to release. The studio also lost some key figures, one of them being the lead designer on Ghostwire Tokyo as supposedly Bethesda mandated changes to it, and then finally its renowned founder Shinji Mikami. At that point, what's really left of Tango? The old blood is out, the new blood too, and no Evil Within 3 on the horizon. Arkane Austin: Prey bombed in sales despite being awesome. It's been reported that, by the time RedFall was about to release, more than 70% of the staff who worked on Prey had already left. RedFall being the disaster it was on all fronts and coming after Prey, is it any surprise that some of these 30% remnants would be folded into Arkane Lyon? Roundhouse Studios: This one has been formed under Zenimax and is being folded into its online branch after working exclusively as a ESO support studio. Makes sense as Bethesda finally moves to a new single-player Elder Scrolls game - sure some of the main staff on ESO will be tapped for it, so Roundhouse staff will take their place. Alpha Dog: Mobile studio. Never heard of Mighty Doom before, and it has been poorly received. Doesn't seem to be wildly successful, and all non-wildly-successful mobile games die early. It's a very cutthroat market. Now take it all in, and you'll notice that: - Bethesda/MS should've managed Tango better to avoid losing key staff. - They also should've done the same for Austin, not to mention they shouldn't have pushed them to do a live service game in the first place. - Roundhouse is just a support studio being folded into what they were already exclusively doing. - Why buy a middling mobile studio in the first place and then have them make a mobile DOOM game of all things? /facepalm See what I mean now? Mercy killings. Let's lament all the MiStakes (Get it? Get it? MS + mistakes? Tough crowd, tough crowd...) that have been done over the years, but these closures/restructuring today? They're just the fallout (pun intended).

This is truly disappointing stuff. Don’t forget Evil Within as well. I was really holding out for EW3. Since EA cancelled Dead Space again and Callisto flopped, all we have is Resident Evil in the triple A horror space. But this is such a waste of legacy studios with great portfolios. Granted Mikami left, but Tango has barely made a game under XBox yet and Arkane Austin’s Redfall is really Bethesda’s fault under their ‘let’s force our single player studios to make live service garbage for money’ mandate that also saw us getting Wolfenstein Youngblood. What a joke though. Spencer was legit saying Arkane isn’t in danger of being closed after Redfall and that they ‘foster creativity’ throughout their studios. Safe to say we’re not getting any more Hi Fi Rush or Pentiment passion prokects either. You can have a great portfolio, you can have made no crappy games yet under a new publisher (Redfall was basically done by the time XBox bought them and Sony got exclusivity for Ghostwire meaning XBox never got any launch interest from it) and even make a critical darling like Hi Fi Rush. I thought these devs would finally have the security and backing under XBox, but now I do not want to see any more purchases for them if this is how they treat legacy devs.

A lot to unpack, Amazon's Fallout series being a big hit probably led to Microsoft shutting down some studios for Bethesda for quicker release for the next Fallout title. Tango Gameworks losing all their figureheads like Ikumi during Ghostwire Tokyo (she was overworked from that game's development) and Shinji Mikami leaving and creating a new studio this year. From the interview he had last year about his departure, apparently he wanted to steer away from horror genre and make smaller projects that required less dev time (Hi-Fi Rush?) and that he wanted to leave 8 years ago from 2023 but stayed an extra 5 years due to him feeling he had responsibility to finish some of the stuff at the time....that and how he didn't feel like a CEO of his own studio (must feel bad when other Capcom Alumni had successful Studios like Suda51, Platinum Games and unrelated to Capcom, Hideo Kojima).

Shame to see people out of their jobs en masse like this, especially considering many of them did a decent job, and the economy is tight. I hope they land on their feet. 12:20 I think it _is_ a house of cards. I think the video game industry has been a house of cards for a long time. The paradigm of "develop a large project purely on credit, then hope you sell enough to earn it back later" is risky, and there are plenty of industries where that doesn't work. I think that's why the industry has leaned so hard into live services, subscriptions, DLC, and microtransactions; the old paradigm sort of worked on a "duct tape and shoestring" basis, but it isn't a long-term solution for an industry. As AAA games get more expensive to make, the system breaks down because it isn't infinitely scalable. Hence the independent games scene flourishing - they can license an engine for cheap, market the game for pennies if they're clever, then hope to catch a wave. And if they don't catch the wave, the game was cheap enough to make that they'll probably break even or profit slightly, regardless. Or maybe I'm completely wrong.

Hi-Fi Rush did well for GP numbers but probably didn't sell all that well, i feel like all of this is M$ and not really what the xbox division wants.
@FidgetTheRat4 ай бұрын
Then how did it receive multiple awards? Like it was a popular game. And the game pass stuff is on Microsoft, they should be accounting for the GP numbers as well-that’s part of their profits.
@TakaChan5694 ай бұрын
@@FidgetTheRat Awards have nothing to do with sales, the game is great but it came at a time where a lot of the playerbase was from the sub on GP. M$ has been betting on enough people having gamepass to offset the cost and it just hasn't worked out, the numbers just aren't there.

@@TakaChan569 Microsoft literally said it smashed expectations, I mean shit it literally was a game that had like no pre-release marketing. I only knew about it cause Steam put it on my queue for games that I might like. :/

Not defending MS or Sony for that matter but I wonder if when it comes to meet with the studios on projects and updates and they have nothing then that weighs in on their decision? Like Arkane Austin, if MS was coming to them and asking alright guys what’s new on the list …and if they just shrug their shoulders and say “…uhh more RedFall maybe?”, then yeah MS is gonna be pissed. Gamepass is a great service and value for consumers but if you can’t keep pushing new reasons for more subscribers to join then it’s going to lose subs and not make any more.
@zerohbeat4 ай бұрын
Maybe its more to do with situations and management. Its very likely that as the leader/s of Tango Gameworks left to start their own studio/s, people left with them. Considering loyalty to people etc.. Its possible that Zenimax / Microsoft felt like closing the studio made the most sense. From the article, some studios were shut down but at least (some, most?) people were moved to other places.
@rewpertcone82434 ай бұрын
Redfall only exists because higher ups forced Arkane Austin to make it to boost the stock price before Microsoft bought zenimax. Don't be fooled, who should have been fired wasn't the devs, it should have been the executives

@@countquackula8539 I’m sorry, but if you were looking at PlayStation this year, with zero first party titles coming out, then scrambling to make third-party exclusivity deals to make up for the gap in their catalog, and their multiple missteps this year as “still viable“, I feel sorry for you. Microsoft and Sony are the exact same company right now. Both are third-party publishing, both are making terrible business decisions and limit your choices when it comes to gaming. Don’t be a bootlicker. Do better.
@countquackula85394 ай бұрын
@Haybud Playstation has more exclusives than Microsoft. You're delusional. Stellar Blade and Ronin are doing big numbers in sales and user review scores. Both are exclusive to Playstation. FF7 Rebirth was critically acclaimed. Helldivers 2 is a massive hit both on PC and console. Playstation dominates the top ten best-selling charts 2024. Dogma sold way more on Playstation. What does Xbox have? No games currently, just Gamepass fluff. You're the bootlicker and reason your console is failing. Both make bad decisions, but Playstation is winning.
