It’s really sad that Panos is leaving. He seem like the only guy at Microsoft that was wanting to innovate. I had 2 Surfaces before I switched back to Mac and they ran great for me. As an artist first time see the Surface Studio and Surface Laptop Studio, I had tears of joy in my eyes. Microsoft made the computers that I want Apple to make. And it was all thanks to Panos.

According to Business Insider Panos left because his division was being shrunk and Microsoft cut some upcoming products. Speculation: It seems Microsoft is once again de-prioritizing the consumer market for Windows. The biggest hit is that Panos had a direct line with the CEO and could at least argue for consumer interests, but now that division will be an extra step removed just as it was during Windows 10. I was amazed to learn that the Windows division did not have that direct line to the CEO during the Windows 10 era, unlike the other important divisions, but you can really tell by how little Windows advanced other than the Surface line itself. Panos' promotion at the Windows 11 launch was huge and meant that Microsoft was taking the consumer facing side of Windows seriously again. Now that's over. Once again those pushing for better consumer products and better design overall will be reporting to a person, who reports to a person, who reports to a person. The results of this we already saw during the Windows 10 era. I'd guess Panos' influence will still be felt in next year's Windows 12 release but after that I'm betting Windows is going to get very stagnant again.

Windows 11 was a huge flop. No wonder he got demoted. I tried windows 11 and boy that was so family different. Many functions had new homes for no good reason. Over all a really confusing update. If that was his baby alone i can see why he is gone.

I'm worried for the future of Windows now. Yeah, Windows have a direction right now which is AI, but for how long? They will eventually ran out of things to AI-ify, or the hype will die down & no longer worth it for Microsoft, or AI will become "too ordinary" that it can no longer be a selling point. Under Panos' design & consumer-minded leadership, Windows 11 now has consistent design on everything a typical user will face in day-to-day use. It has the biggest & most consistent design & visual refresh since Windows 7. Touch friendliness also improved a ton from Windows 10 which is great for Surface. It feels so delightful using Windows 11 after using Windows 10 for many years. Will history repeat itself again? When Windows lead Joe Belfore left the company, Windows 10 was left drifting aimlessly without a clear direction, as features keeps being stacked on without care for design & user experience, and things get abandoned. _Remember how every new feature was shoved into the taskbar without a second thought?_ It's also worrying for Surface. Surface could be left on iPhone-style product refresh only, with no new features except minor ones, no new product lines, and lack any kind of innovation - even small ones. and touch friendliness could be forgotten again which isn't good for Surface.

@@trowawayacc He wasn't fired or demoted. He left Microsoft to take a job at Amazon. This isn't a good thing for Microsoft, it likely means Windows will flounder without direction for years. The only one this benefits is Apple.

The prices have gotten completely out of control. It's saddening, and I'm wondering who the artists are that can afford this -- and whether they'd even choose this over other digital art devices for their workspace. It was widely considered overpriced *last* time when it started at $1600 without dedicated graphics (did the pen even come with it last time?) And now I'm learning we have to pay $2000 for a laptop with no GPU??? I don't even get a TB of storage? It's beyond pathetic - and this could go for the Surface Laptop Go too - $800? Just for build quality? Good grief

I recently got the older version and super happy with it and draw a lot more because of the convenience. For 2d artists I don't think the upgrade is worth it. Addition of micro SD is like "what?" Just use a dock or a dongle. This refresh is nice, but more beneficial for 3d artists.

The minute Apple announces the rumored 14 and 16 iPad Ultra models running MacOS and powered by future M chipsets, it’s game over for Microsoft’s Surface products. An iMac with touch support and Apple Pencil you say? RIP Microsoft Studio.

Apple has made it quite clear that they will neither equip their tablets with a regular MacOS, nor make their their iMacs or MacBooks pen and touch enabled. Much though I have hoped for something like that, there´s no indication this will ever happen. Apple is steadfast in their refusal to cater to the convertible market. Now, a 14 inch iPad Pro is a possibility, but nothing but a rumor so far. When and if such a device will be released, it will still have iPad OS though. Right now it´s only Microsoft and Samsung that are giving us the devices Apple should have introduced a long time ago.

@@pixelpusher1393Yeah, I’m not holding out hope anymore but it’s good to keep up with the rumors. It’s why I told myself the 2024 iPad Pro will be the last one I buy until they announce a MacOS version with a vented fan-cooled chassis. I have the 2020 pre-M1 12.9 model currently. Gonna get the largest storage and RAM configuration in 2024 for future proofing and that will be it for me. Donezo. The few reasons I keep buying the iPad Pro are ProCreate, Shapr3D, Affinity, and the upcoming ProCreate Dream. Everything else is a nightmare with iPadOS. You get accessories and flash drives stop working after you update the OS, you can’t have apps run in the background, you can’t have internet downloads running in the background, the files system is so f’in basic, you can’t change resolution in internet browser video players, the multitasking split screens mode is subpar and it’s completely useless in vertical rotation. Yeah…… I’m not gonna justify all the powerful hardware unfortunately being capped by a glorified iPhoneOS anymore.

If you compare the experiment that OEMs did with Windows computers before and after the Surface, you can really see that Panos Panay had a tangible impact. Surface devices pushed what computers could do in ways that Apple did not, and we're all the more better for it Panos could do radical things with Amazon's IOTs and tablets, or maybe we can see him do things that he couldn't under Microsoft. I conceptually love the idea of this all-in-one, polymorphic device that changes to your needs, but the reality really catches up to this dream. Theres definitely an elegance in efficiency to it, and keeping all your files and software consistent is nice, but theres so many scenarios where separate devices are just better. If you're a student, a separate tablet and laptop woukd let you take notes while watching a video lecture. It also becomes unwieldy to use in the tablet profile, particularly given the quantity of software unoptimized for touch, while making trade-offs in performance terms in the laptop profile. Those trade-offs become a lot harder to swallow when you're likely paying a price premium over getting say an ipad and macbook seperately.

@@martyboi Surface Pro delay news came from Windows Central. I read them frequently. As for why, this year is a year of cutbacks & belt tightening at Microsoft like other tech companies, and tons of devices were delayed. Even the historic & iconic Microsoft-branded keyboard & mouse division was ended entirely with only Surface-branded ones going forward. The reason is that the Surface team was told to change (delay) plans & only focus on the most popular devices that bring in the most revenue. If it weren't for this order, this year would see lots more Surface devices & refreshes, including a complete redesign of Surface Go & a brand new 11inch Surface Pro which I'm still looking forward to.

Brad, I'm a Cintiq user, how does drawing compare on the original Surface Studio Laptop? I travel a lot, and deadlines always seem to land when I'm away from my 27" Cintiq. I'm always throwing money at possible tablet travel solutions, but all have been lousy (the best is still my Cintiq 16 Pro with a Windows laptop, since the iPad isn't ideal for a production environment with my workflow). I was hoping the recent Huion Kamvas Studio 16 (all-in-one) would work, but not only was it under powered, I had two units die on me (both while I was out of the state) and Huion finally just refunded my money. Thoughts on the Surface for drawing, and is there a pen for it that isn't flat with the same quality as the Slim Pen 2?

Slim Pen 2 is about 85%-90% there, just not quite. The biggie for me: Initial activation force is higher than with Wacom, so you do not have this rock solid confidence that each contact between pen tip and display registers. Plus it feels like hard plastic on totally smooth glass, not like the frosted surface of a Cintiq. Still, there are artists who use the MS SLS for artwork, so it seems to be possible. Since you already have a Wacom Cintiq 16 Pro, you just might want to stick with it. But why do you think that even the Wacom Cintiq 16 Pro is a lousy solution for a mobile workspace?

The times I have checked it with my luggage I leave notes with a QR code regarding the specs because they think it has lithium batteries (it always gets inspected and they leave a little note), but when I treat it as a carry on, it always seems to get pulled at security and they question it. Plus it means I'm having to bring both a laptop and the Cintiq, which is just more weight. Finally, the need for all the cords that the Cintiq requires just is cumbersome when you're trying to work in confined spaces. I'm 6'4", so I already have a large footprint.

If you get the new 130 pen, you need the charger for 35 bucks lol I need a new laptop but man, this is a JOKE. 2k minimum for a laptop emphasizing pen input and it doesn't come with it. If you want it, it's another 130 bucks. After spending 130 bucks on the pen, if it dies, you need to spend 35 bucks to be able to use it again 😂😂😂😂😂 I love Microsoft but they need to make it come with this laptop and it needs to be rechargeable on this laptop specifically since it's 2k MINIMUM. This is actual comedy HAHA. Personally, 2k minimum, even if it comes with the pen that self recharges on the laptop via wireless charging (it's 2023, no excuses on why it doesn't), IS WAY TOO MUCH FOR A LAPTOP that will NEEDED to be UPGRADED in like 5 years. Missed some of the news? I missed all of it, updates don't interest me. But in all honesty neither does the Surface interest me, simply because of the price. It's like Wacom, charge top dollar for technology that everyone else has for less and most of them offer more for that less. I'll stick to paying less. My Lenovo with very pleasant trackpad and Wacom powered pen suits me well... at half of the price of the cheapest Surface laptop.... and at half price of the entry level Sutface laptop, Lenovo even threw in a 1Tb SSD, more powerful CPU and GPU and a QHD Screen. Imagine that for $1000.

If you need to travel to buy a Surface product, DON"T BUY! They don't offer support outside selling areas. Maintenance is hellish, you need to disassemble the entire product just to get the part id you need. 3 years after launch they just don't make new parts to replace. All parts is tailored made for this, can't find a generic replacement, even for a simple start button. 💸

I'm just thinking that why is Microsoft 1 generation behind with their chipsets... They released this new laptop right after Intel unvieled their next gen chips, which apparently have some insane uogrades... Who's gonna buy this outdated crap when there are laptops with way better chips at better price

⛔ Idk what's wrong with you, every time they release a high end product you always get the one without dedicated GPU which is a bad idea because you do graphics and video editing

I'm afraid I have to disagree that MS has set bars on PCs. The opposite is applicable. The Surface Duo was a total disaster that was put out of its misery recently. The Surface Pro was supposed to start Windows Tablets (again), but now even MS no longer calls it a tablet as it trails iPadOS and Android tablets, and few OEMs care about this (Samsung gave up). The Surface Studio only gets updated every few years because it is a niche product with few buyers, most affiliated with MS. It succeeded when it copied with the Surface Laptop, but that does not count as MS didn't start that. The Surface Neo never made it to the general public. The Surface Go is just one of many ultrabooks and offers no added value for its high price. The big guns at MS decided that the hardware division is not really doing it and that money would be better invested in the core businesses of data and software. I can quickly agree with that.

If it weren't for Surface, Windows laptops would still be ugly plastic sandwich no matter how high-end it is. And I'm glad that Surface injected some much needed motivation into Windows OEMs.

I think Apple set the standard, not the Surface. It was just MS was one of the first to copy Apple with higher-quality aesthetics. Apple are the reason Windows machines and Intel in particular are getting better. So I disagree there.@@NopWorks

I wonder if any real professionals actually use these devices. The idea and hardware seems amazing, but the price and upgradability is horrendous.
