At 46:30, one of the competitors--or I guess based on their shirts we should consider them to be athletes--finishes up a string of commands to move data and do math. The announcer starts to get pretty excited about a thing I only peripherally understand (but find to be pretty freakin cool) then presses the GO button to catalyze a cascade of functions that do some cool shit and make life easier for accountants and statisticians and physicists and botanists and dentists and calculators and murlocs and swordfish and probably Microsoft employees, to boot too.

I'm still a beginner but I've worked with semiconductor R&D engineers in the 2000's who did some amazing things with Excel! I run my own small business so spreadsheets are my bread and butter. I didn't know that a championship existed for something like this! My spreadsheets look nothing like the ones they were making. I saw Excel-only solutions solving engineering math modeling problems. Real things. A few days of proper work saved weeks of work time. The level of these guys' skills in Excel were much higher than mine. But even my level is enough to make useful things in different areas. I.e. budget calculations and estimations. Not only family budget, but projects too

thats where these people come from, they use excel every day to figure out solutions to problems. making it a tournament tho, you need to have all the correct answers in advance to check for points, making real situations only on thing: predictable / trainable. these tasks try to be unique so no profession has a huge advantagy by having solved that exact problems thousands of times before.
