So if price is what concerns you about the surface pro accessories. Keep in mind that the base one is $999 and can use older, cheaper, type covers and pens. As opposed to the m4 iPad, which needs a new keyboard and pen. So you can get a surface pro 11 with a type cover and pen for cheaper than the base m4 iPad Pro 13 inch (without any accessories) with much better software functionality and double the ram

Can’t compare them. Also buying the last M4 Pro big iPad doesn’t make sense for 95% of the users as iPad Air it’s good enough already for what iPadOS can do. For similar money you can buy Macbook Air. Coming back to Surface and iPad Pro. Surface it’s a medium tablet and a medium laptop replacement. iPads are excellent tablets but they aren’t laptop replacement.

@@liviurosca my point still stands. If you only get an iPad. You’re gonna run into “you need a Mac for that” very often. I know because I’ve been daily driving an iPad for the last 6 years because I’m an artist and I wanted to use it for art. I got it because I was naive and assumed that when they put the m1 in it, they’d want to make it more capable as a computer. But apple just wants to sell you two devices, and that’s that. The surface pro, while not the best tablet, or best laptop. Is still capable of being both. Where the iPad is artificially restricted, and you would need an entire other device to get the functionality of the surface pro. And it wouldn’t be near as seamless

The main reason I would want to use a Windows device is driver and program compatibility, and when you switch the architecture from x86 to arm, you loose that. Microsoft is just dipping their toes into the water with arm as they are still mostly x86 based. When Apple switched to arm, the didn't take half measures, they dragged everyone kicking and screaming over whether they liked it or not. Good for future compatibility, less good if you had something that worked and just wanted to keep doing that. When people develop for windows they will either have to choose one version to support, support both at a higher cost, or rely on the translation layer or emulation. Unless Microsoft nails the translation layer, windows on arm will just be the equivalent of an over priced Chrome book.
@sso7968
@sso7968 15 күн бұрын
real but if you want compatibility just get surface 9, this surface is mostly used for the ability of arm based architecture to have huge battery capabilities and comparing it to Chromebook undersells the hardware performance of it. I actually have a surface pro 11, and is it somewhat limited but in the future emulation will only get better and better. It obviously arm is the future so thats why windows is going forward with it.
@njnjco
@njnjco 15 күн бұрын
@@sso7968 There are some really powerful Chromebooks out there and there's actually a ton that you can do on Chrome OS that you didn't used to be able to do, so the comparison is less of a stretch than you seem to think. But yeah, battery is a huge selling point for arm. How are you liking the surface?? I've only heard opinions from tech KZbinrs and one person I know IRL who uses one of the older x86 surfaces for work.
@sso7968
@sso7968 15 күн бұрын
 @njnjco well it has been a while since I've used chrome OS and a Chromebook. and yeah I like it, but I mostly use it for convenient of its form factor of as its a 2-1 and running windows 11, but the driver incompatibility is a real reason not to get it as you said. I had to spent time time researching which software I could use that are supported on arm. Since I already have other x86 windows computers I'm good. For the most basic office task, it'll work with some good emulation on some software. But theses things get hot like burning hot when uses for prolonged periods, fan something doesn't run and is kind of noisily and like in the video it does throttle, but I kind of solve by blasting an external fan at myself and it. I love the pen and its great as a note taking device. But beside that if you use if without the keyboard, it seems like windows 11 isn't really aiming for customers who use it like an iPad basically a lot of issue with it closing out of chrome or whatever your on, but that a whole another issue. yeah thats about it :)
@kerrydaniels8460
@kerrydaniels8460 14 күн бұрын
No offense, but have you used Windows for ARM? I have on my Mac of all places and it runs just fine for emulation. It also work just fine for what most people do on their laptops to be real. The more popular it is the les worry in the first place. Plus, we're talking laptops. What most people care about is battery life and lightweight productivity tasks, and browsing the web. All those things can be done very well in ways not even Mac ipads can do. The benefit of the surfaces is being able to be a true hybrid device unlike Apple that requires you to have 2 different devices to try and do what the surface already does. Having already run Windows for ARM for a while now, I can confidently say it runs what most already want well and has added benefits. It only helps computing overall for windows to do this as it will help all 3 major OS's as devs Duke it out to support it.

@@kerrydaniels8460 I haven't used Windows on arm, no. I have used Wine on Linux and MacOS, so I'm familiar with what is and is not possible with a translation layer. Both when translating from x86 windows to x86 linux and from x86 windows to arm based MacOS. I agree that battery life is important, that's why I got a MacBook. A lot of people are happy so long as their device has a web browser, but for a lot of others, if the one program that they need for work or in order to do one specific thing cannot be translated or emulated, that's a deal breaker. Even if absolutely everything is better on arm based Windows, if the one thing they really need isn't covered, it's a non starter. A lot of people are stuck on an OS because of this. I know that there are a lot of benefits to arm, but it's not for everyone.

This competition is wonderful! I can’t wait for the M4 to show up in laptops because I feel as if the improvements from M3-M4 is much more significant than people are giving it credit for. I have the binned 9-core version with only 3 performance cores, and it outperforms the highest end X-Elite chip with 12 performance cores in almost all tasks (obviously I can’t run a Cinebench test and there are just certain programs that wont work on iPad OS), and this is not even getting into the graphics performance as well as the fact that I am averaging about 14 hours of battery life in a fan less 5.1mm design. Now, software and OS are incredibly important and anyone who is an honest tech enthusiast can understand why certain people need to exist within certain ecosystems for their work, as well as just what they prefer when it comes to things like UI. With all of that said, I just love the fact that Windows users are finally getting to experience powerful ARM-based portable computing. It really is wonderful, and the innovation that comes with it will only continue to increase as more and more people have access to its specific benefits.

Things that went well for the Surface Pro 11 and Surface Laptop 7: - Starting with 16GB of RAM as the base model. - 2nd best battery life next to MacBooks. Between 12 to 18 hours of max battery life. - Excellent CPU performance. - Fastest RAM speed in the industry. Yes, faster than the M3 Max. - Adjustable micro-SSD (M.2 2230) - Good for office work. - Good for Data analysis work. Not to be confused with Data science. Python, R, Excel, Power BI, VS Code, and VS community work. - Good for photo editing. Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop work well. The bad: - Old printers and some new ones do not have drivers for Windows on ARM. This is the biggest issue for me. - Horrible for gaming. - Most video editing software either doesn't work or is horrible when it does. This includes Davinci Resolve and most Adobe Premier. - $400+ for the new keyboard on the Surface Pro 11. You can buy an older and less expensive keyboard, but it won't have those elite features.

It would be unlikely for me to ever recommend a Surface Pro to someone. I have had five of them due to use cases that I need them for and all five do not last. The reliability of the product is some of the worst I have ever experienced in the computer industry in 30 years of being in the computer industry. Every single one of the five have had some form of problem that is not necessarily game ending but definitely game changing. From the touch screen breaking and not working to battery life going to next to nothing to chargers dying over and over again stock chargers not aftermarket chargers two displays having dead pixels to overheating problems and I could go on. In perspective I have owned 6 MacBook pros of the six only two have ever had problems 3 lasted 7 years before I sold them with no problems whatsoever. Think about that obviously this is not statistically valid I understand that but all the surface pros I have ever owned have had significant debilitating problems of the MacBook pros I've had only a couple that is not good period

To me (nerd) the current gen surface is MUCH MORE of a downgrade than an upgrade (compatibility issue, beta apps, drivers issues, lots of issue that can BREAK your workflow).For long battery life, it is all due to OS optimization, this arm based os able to archieve long battery life is because the OS dont have lots of crap in their background service. The x86 chip still have service from 1980 that still run in the background (not to mention on x86 program that is havent optimize for 2024 laptop) for god sake... I'm still baffled by their marketing team's oversight in not recognizing the strong sales of their x86 chips compared to ARM chips before introducing the ARM chip only in the next version. It seems like a missed opportunity on their part.

@@willbuschmann Maybe it's because having a removable battery means I can have a second, already charged battery ready to go. No worrying about having to haul around more stuff to lose (Charging cables/power brick), or trying to find an available power port in public (School/Airport/etc.) Pop out the depleted battery, pop in the full one, and keep going until the end of the day. Then when you get back home, simply plug in the depleted battery to a charger and you're good to go for tomorrow. So if it means that I have less clutter jangling around in my bag, and don't have to worry about charging in the middle of class/work, then I'll take removable batteries any day of the week.
@Rohirin
@Rohirin 12 күн бұрын
@@vidpetrovic8907 They used to. I believe that a thin laptop can have a detachable battery for fast swapping. Instead of burying it in the middle of the device where it can balloon and kill the rest of the system, simply have it on the back panel where it can pop out like a Nintendo Switch Cartridge or have it be part of the back panel. Then you don't lose any of the aesthetics, or the functionality of the laptop. On top of that, you wouldn't need to worry about trying to find a power outlet in the middle of class/work. The only downside to swappable batteries in older laptops and phones was a loss of water resistance, but we've come far enough in technology where it can be mitigated.

Personally have zero interest in these Snapdragon laptops or anything AI period. Sadly AI is being forced on us and will eventually be in every electronic one way or another. I like the Surface products in general, but can't justify the prices. Im one of the few that refuses to purchase Apple products though for a similar reason, as they are ridiculously expensive and can't stand their OS. So I'll stick to budget Acer laptops for basic tasks that i need when on the go. They typically cost about 1/3rd the price of a Surface or Apple and still get 3 years or so of quality life. I even have a bulky very low end Acer Nitro "gaming" laptop thats 6 years old and still works fine....wont play any new AAA games but has no problem with CSGO or even GTA, for killing time.
