My dad was super into aviation, and when I was about five years old he co-rented an airplane with some other guy. One summer when we were on our way to a family reunion, just before take-off, my dad looked over and said "want to do it?" I was terrified and excited, and all I could do was furiously nod. He smiled, took his hands off the yoke, and punched the gas. With all the grit, determination, and focus a five year old could muster, I held it steady as we gained speed, and when he said "Pull!", I pulled back. Gently, smoothly, partly because my weak little arms could only manage that much force, and partly because I thought that's how it was supposed to go. We gained altitude gently, smoothly, and my excitement grew. Wait wait! Can't get too carried away! Gotta keep it smooth! We soon reached cruising altitude, I sighed in relief, and my dad patted my head and took back the controls. I think that was the same trip when he over estimated the plane's fuel efficiency and ran out of gas halfway between two airports, and probably would have crashed and killed us all if we didn't have a tailwind. Of course, he didn't mention that until we were older and were joking about how he somehow always manages to run out of gas when we're halfway between two towns. I miss my dad.

Pretty much every release looked like it was years ahead and ground breaking. FS98, 2000, 2004 and 2006 (FSX) all got better graphics, more realistic aircraft models and 3rd party developers continued to raise the bar. I still remember the first time I flew in the Level-D 767 in FS2004 (FS9). Later with PMDG QOTS.. And 30 years later Microsoft (with the help of Asobo) did it again. When X-Plane 11 was release everybody was impressed with its graphics and sloped runways. Than comes along a revived simulator from Microsoft in 2019 and suddenly even XP11 looked very outdated. The Flight Simulator franchise always pushed computers to their limits. They did so in 1990, in 2006 and also in 2020..

@@fontende I'm guessing that you haven't flow in the new flight simulator yet. MFS has actually the best weather engine I've encountered and is very close to real life. A cross wind does not simply make you move laterally, but in MFS it can actually topple your aircraft if the cross wind is acting on the wrong surface. MFS also got wind pockets which can make your crash during takeoffs or landings. Wind and air are simulated in the new sim and it much better than any engine for ESP or XP..

Just went down a rabbit hole looking for the artist. And while I probably didn't find them I did find someone working in the same area with a similar style around the same time, John Mattos. Looking into the MS Flight Sim 4.0 company I found they were eventually bought by Sierra. So I looked at some Sierra game box art but didn't find anything that looked too similar. I noticed Sierra also owned a company called Dynamix so I checked out their library of games and noticed the art for a game called Arcticfox looked similar. An artist named John Mattos did the box art for that game as well as some very famous stuff such as The Rocketeer cover art and the Indian Jones font. Nowhere can I find a comprehensive list of his commissions but he does state on his website he did work for Microsoft so maaaaaaybe? No definitive proof but I thought I'd share anyway :>

I remember playing FS4 borrowed from a friend even though the first one I remember getting was FS5. One of the greatest oddities I remember about the scenery model in those early versions is that the ground was always rendered as a flat object with mountains placed on it. The elevation of the ground was chosen based on where you were. I recall the experience in FS5 of flying toward a mountain and suddenly having the flat world around me suddenly come up and hit me as everything adjusted for the new ground level of where I was flying. I remember the first time I got to fly a version that actually had a full elevation mesh applied under the world map textures and how much that changed everything for me.

I don't really agree, I think modern games are ambitious in different ways. A lot of game ambition depends on the hardware of the time and what the developer wants to do with the game. And tying this back into Flight Simulator, I think it's fair to say that the new game is pretty much the most ambitious Flight Simulator. It's trying to create a near 1-to-1 recreation of the entire place, buildings and all, live weather and flights, etc.

@@squidud The indie scene is brimming with that sort of experimentation if you're not finding it in AAA games. Those big games do well by doing "what works" because most generally enjoy "what works". Indies are able to experiment more due to knowing they don't have to try and hold onto a reliable base of customers, or have to provide profitable growth to shareholders. Neither are necessarily better than each other, they just have different goals in terms of audience.
