I recently picked up a Microsoft Surface 4 Laptop. I really like it except for one main thing - well really having many more things. It only has 1 USB-C and 1 USB-A Port. Which doesn't leave much room for external mics , cameras, or any other device. This is why I decided to purchase this Microsoft Surface Dock. In this video I unbox the Surface Dock.

you mentioned you had the first surface laptop. does that work with this dock?

Hi! Thanks for making this video, I really appreciate it as I am considering buying one of these for use with my Microsoft SurfaceBook3. Lately I have noticed that when I attach the power supply "coming from the back" (as I need to use the USB-C port) sometime the light on the charger itself comes on but the laptop isn't drawing power. After some fiddling around including detaching the screen and plugging in the charger to the base of the screen, then plugging it back into the base/keyboard section, then the laptop would start to pull the charge. So my thinking was, if I buy the surface dock, I can use it to power the laptop and use one of the USB-C ports on the dock to facilitate the video out function. Do you think this is a good workaround? Also, would it make more sense to but the newer version of this product with the thunderbolt 4?

Thank you so much. I'm looking forward to getting a surface laptop studio for work and gaming and wanted to see if this is worth it! Although I need 4 USB-A ports for my microphone, mouse, keyboard and headphones.. Guess I'll buy a USB hub without a cable!

Do you know a way to connect a non-microsoft laptop to the dock to display on a monitor? (I doubt if it's possible but thought I would still ask)

While the Surface Dock 2 is made for Surface Pro 6 and newer, is there any functionality on a Surface Pro 3?

@@LuminousMatrix No, not yet. I know at the end of the year I’ll be upgrading my Pro 3 to an 8 or 9. But wanted a dock now that I can get off eBay. Doesn’t make sense to get a Dock 1 if I can get some functionality out of a Dock 2 for now.

Question, how does it handle the power to the surface laptop? Does it keep charging when the power is full?

The Surface uses “smart power” conservation to save the battery. You can leave it plugged in and the surface will only draw power when it should. I hope this helps. Thank you for watching!

Hi there, I have a question I have this exact dock that's running two monitors usb c to display port I want to add a 3rd monitor How would I go about doing this? Can I buy a non Microsoft brand dock and join them together? If you could point me in the right direction I would hightly appreciate it. Thanks.

With this dock, I’m not sure if you will be able to drive the resolution that you want with 3 monitors. You might need a USBC to DisplayPort from the computer itself for the third. Thank you for watching!

@@LuminousMatrix so i hust noticed I don't have usb C on my surface it has one usb port and a smaller square port , possibly a mini display port The model is the 1796 which is I beleive the 5th generation surface pro. Can you give me any insight to what that port is above the USB port on the side and can it be used with a monitor. Thanks

may i know if i can use microsoft surface dock 2 to do the extend of screen? i have a surface pro 4 and a surface pro 7. i want one of them as primary and extend to the other one. i asked microsoft support but they have not yet answered me.

you cannot. both are computers. you cannot use one as just a monitor. no functionality for that.
