Well...here's the thing: the Surface Go is aimed at schools. It's for kids and teenagers to have a light machine to access word, watch KZbin videos and do a bit of browsing. It's not meant to replace a laptop from someone who relies heavily on one. Hence why your experience would never be good. The Surface Pro is obviously a better deal. And the price on the Surface Go is too high considering it doesn't bring the keyboard. If it did for just 50€ more, it'd be an awesome deal. Just a clarification: the Surface Go ships with Windows 10 Home. However, it comes in "S mode", which means there's a switch turned on that blocks third party content. When you "unlock" the device, it simply removes that switch and unlocks everything in Windows 10 Home. If you want to only use store apps later, you can't return to "S mode" but you can turn on the option to only allow installation of store apps in Settings -> Apps & features -> Allow apps from the Store only.

+DBS Here you are describing it coming out of the box in Windows 10 S mode and he just showed you where to take it out of S mode so it is not locked down anymore and you wind up running regular Windows 10 Home and here you are saying that the Surface Go is not meant to replace a laptop when it actually is made to be used as a laptop if you choose for it to because at least you can get the keyboard for it and the wireless mouse for it hence the reason why it is meant to also be able to be used as a laptop and also all Windows 10 tablets and laptops and desktops run the same user interface and that is why you actually can use this tablet in the form of a laptop . The thing is that it is more portable than an actual laptop .

In fact the Surface Go or any of the other Surface Tablets were never really made for gaming anyway but I wonder if you can trick it to do 4K video editing by using external storage to work from and not the storage on the device itself . With that said for me the videos don't have to be perfect . All I would want is just to see things clearly . That's all .

This has left me somewhat bemused, i have been using a surface 3 with intel atom x7-8700, with little to no problems. The Pentium 4415Y is considered a faster chip in comparison, therefore performance should be smoother.

Surface Pro 6 + Surface GO are now my ONLY home + mobile devices. I've retired my Windows desktop and laptops, rarely use either of my Chromebooks anymore, rarely use my Android tablets, I've even connected and use my smartphone through the Surface Pro. With the Surface line Microsoft has created as close to a perfect computer that could ever be, nothing currently on the market comes close.

Almost forgot... I've had zero "lag" issues with the Surface GO, which I do mobile audio/photo production and editing when I don't have my Surface Pro. The GO has done everything I've asked it to do, when I've asked it to, with no complaints.

It's definitely a personal preference and usage issue. My wife has been using the Surface Go since I finished up this video, and she uses it as her daily driver computer, doing graduate school courses with it, shopping lists, etc. and minimal complaints. For me, it just wasn't a good fit.

To increase security and performance, Windows 10 in S mode runs only apps from the Microsoft Store. If you want to install an app that isn't available in the Microsoft Store, you'll need to permanently switch out of S mode. There's no charge to switch out of S mode, but you won't be able to turn it back on. If you're blocked from switching and your device belongs to an organization, check with your administrator. Your organization can choose to keep all devices in S mode.

I know chrome is used by everyone but I found chrome to make devices less effective with making it slower, and somehow it transfers viruses. I found no problems with edge. Edge has been my main browser for almost 3 years and my time spent on it has been no issue so I hope you give this device a second chance and try browsing with edge and see what happens.

I can't understand how Microsoft would go with a pentium processor and not at the very least an i3 or i5 processor?! A real no-go for me though is the fact that it no doubt has a non-removable battery in it like my Surface Pro 3 did. I had to destroy it recently when the battery died and I found out that they don't work on the AC adapter only.

Agree with everything he said. I owned the Surface Go, but it had to go back. It needs about 20% more CPU power... or better thermal throttling handling. Even light browsing is too much for it sometimes. Browser's are heavy apps that run interpreted code, so a few Edge tabs will throw this into a fit. Nothing to do with memory or hard drive speeds, just the CPU under load will eventually throttle and when that happens....the surface go becomes a brick.

I am confused either should I buy surface go or pro 5. Here are the available specs and price: 1. Surface go 4 gb RAM without key board is 495 usd and with key board is 630 usd. 2. Surface go 8 gb Ram with out key board is 685 usd and with key board is 820 USD. 3. Surface pro 5 with core i5 and 8 gb RAM including key board is 960 usd. My actual inrerest to buy 2 in 1 laptop is to get a small device, easy to carry having Windows option where multi tasking can be perforned, I may play few low graphic games, which I used to play in 2008 on my Pentium 4 ;:) I have seen bad reviews about surface go mentioning system getting slow on Chrome and while opening multiple tabs on KZbin. i am not looking for a device which gets slow on KZbin as I used to open like 8 or 9 tabs normally and multiple files. I liked Surface go as it is very light weight and handy comparing to Surface pro 5. Some users were saying Pro is better as surface go have small display which is not favourable for long run. I am really confused which one to select. I don't consider Surface go with 8 gb as it would be better to buy instead Surface pro 5 with 8 gb as it's on promotion and on a cheap price. Please share your thoughts Surface go 4 gb or pro 5 with 8 gb ? Plus if any of your valuable experience to share with me. By the way I am a person who likes to keep gadget for a long time. You can freely upgrade to full Windows 10 and therefore you'll also get uncompromised compatibility and are not dependent on the few apps in the store. That's the main reason to get one of these devices after all. If you watched any other video or just googled about it you would have known that. But instead you make this device worse than it is. Your mentioned intentions of getting this device are not even very fitting. I rather think this is a great tablet for people who want or need a full blown Windows OS to get some serious(not in the sense of ultra hardware-taxing) work done, but in a nicely refined and small portable tablet format. In other words a good working Windows experience in an efficient tiny tablet. That's at least what I love about it :)

It has full Windows. It's in"S Mode" when you get it which kind of locks it down to use store apps only(meant for schools for better safety control), but as he showed in the vid it's easy to get out of. Once out of S Mode you can install regular programs to your heart's content.

Wow first review to mention it is slow, could there be an issue initially ? because a similar processor is in the Lenovo ideapad 320 with only 4gb ram and there are some reviews actually showing way more than 18 tabs open and video playing and photoshop and is still not sluggish . I really would like to know if this is one off issue in this device or it has some optimisation issues ? I am a new subscriber enjoying your content :)

This is definitely not the first review where i've seen someone complain that its slow. The Surface Go has a Pentium Gold 4415Y, the Lenovo ideapad 320 uses up to i7 CPUs.. its also much larger and is more of a laptop form factor with active cooling vs this with passive cooling. The Pentium Gold chip in the GO only has a 2MB cache compared to likely a 4MB cache on the i5/i7 and also doesn't have turbo boost as its clocked at a fixed 1.6Ghz so yes the Surface Go would be slower. I have the same 8GB model as this review.. its not a full fledged laptop and isnt a replacement for one but it is a nice complement to my existing computer. It's just something small and ultra portable that i can take with me everywhere. Its really mainly good at doing 1 task at a time, and from that aspect it lets me get work emails done or coding or telenet into servers. Its a jack of all trades but because of the lower power CPU it's also a master of none.

For my use, i need something that's fast and can do the basics without a lot of fluff. Eventually I gotta retire my MB Air and the Asus Flip seems to fit the bill, it's fast and can handle the basics well like general internet usage, maybe watching Netflix or Plex, basic office stuff (using OpenOffice) and it can alternatively be used as a tablet for when I wanna use the comixology app and read some comics, or if I wanna download a kindle app and read my kindle books on it. Really the only downside of this specific asus flip is if you take it outside there is an issue with glare.

Good to know, thanks for the info, I have a friend who has been saying good things about the Samsung chromebooks but after an experience with Samsung's "support" a couple months back I am kinda weary about going with them in case (worst case) something does go wrong with the chromebook, still thanks for letting me know about the spacebar, I tried it out in store and it seemed ok but i didn't specifically test out the space bar a lot

Hm, I would rather go with the Acer Switch line ... the Surface Go is overrated IMHO, and a Pentium Y is slow as hell (think of Baytrail), not really usable for doing real work with it.

Pentium Y is good enough for most things. Word-Excel, etc, doesn't require much power. Go ahead get the Acer Switch and try to get more than 2 hours on battery. There's a youtuber trying games on the Go, and most games can be ran.

I tried to really like it but the Surface Go is a NO-GO based on many basic reasons. First, it is being marked as a productivity device based on having Windows. Sure, if you like typing like a Trex and are only using very basic things which is basically...viola!... a TABLET in essence. But without the luxury of a snappy mobile OS, slow starts/ updates from Windows, non Touch friendly interface. And the biggest KICK in the NUTZ? The battery SUCKS compared to the “almost 9 hours” advertised. That is the biggest problem. It is too small and slow for regular computing and it does not really qualify as a tablet. I had to grudgingly go back to getting an iPAD 2018 / 2018 GB AND LTE for $550 with support for the pencils and TONS of keyboard case options. Things are snappy, I access full Windows work computing in the cloud through VMARE, I log in to my home IMAC via Chrome Remote Desktop without a hitch. Display is gorgeous, slim form factor, things work right away for KZbin and streaming, TONS more apps and on and on. Bottomline - This Surface GO is really for basic high school level kids of rich parents who can’t research better small laptops out there with proper keyboards and more power (eg the Yoga line) It is TOO EXPENSIVE for what it offers even as a secondary laptop when you add the keyboard and pen. The larger PRO are the ones you want for portability (if they could only get on board the USB C changing train) The iPad works great as a secondary laptop also because it keeps things separate from a “proper computer “ so you don’t have to worry about overlapping files on multiple machines etc. Simply use the cloud for cross pollinating files as needed (BOX etc) Biggest thing going for Surface is the 3:2 screen factor for people needing productivity over media watching. Biggest negative of ALL iPads - no Mouse support to complete the Trifecta of proper Screen/Keyboard/Mouse for true computing.

Miss Controllerism YMMV but I gave it my best shot and it simply didn’t cut it. The trampoline keyboard is already a liability on the lap and any peeks type setup. Just because the device “CAN” do the things they are saying does not mean it is being done efficiently. Once the pretty candy wrapper is taken off, it is a slow processor and a demanding OS that simply does not work well with Touch and a sparse app library. And the battery is NOWHERE close to 9 hours in “real life” usage. That was the ultimate buzz kill for me.

My initial reaction was also negative, but I've now come to like it as a lightweight device that I don't think twice about taking with me. Tablet function works fine with Edge browser and will be better for writing when Swiftkey is available on Windows (its in the current beta build). It gets bogged down with many tabs open in Chrome, but Edge is okay. Webcam is very good and Windows Hello is a nice plus. I don't think this thing was made for typing on your lap with the keyboard, which is fine with me, as the Pro isn't much better in that regard. Typing on a table or on a tray if your flying coach is quite good for a tablet of this size. Use for business work is good as long as you don't have to type constantly for long periods of time.
